Culturally Embedded Lessons for ELA, Social Studies, Science, and Math Alaska Standards
Students look at how salmon were harvested and managed in four eras: Lingít fish camps, the Russian fishery at Ozerskoi Redoubt (Redoubt Lake), the American cannery era, and modern management. They rate each system using the same criteria fisheries scientists use, then answer the essential question: Which approach to using Southeast Alaska salmon was the most sustainable? The lesson ties Alaska Day to land and resources. Each change in who controlled Alaska also changed how salmon were used.
