Children’s Choir History of St. Stephen Church
In the 1940s, “The Sunbeams” were formed under the direction of the late Robertha Barker and Clora Miller Cosby.
In 1958, the “Buds of Promise” was formed under the direction of the late Maude Brown. Arlene Birch and Teresa Grace took over after the death of Maude Brown. The name of the group remained until it changed leadership under the direction of D’Andria Cole to the “Lil’ Saints” in the early 1990s.
The group changed its name to its current one, “God’s Creation”, under the direction of Darryl “Big Smooth” Brents with help from Tracey Mitchell in the late 90s.
Over the years, the choir has had many directors including Carrie Dickerson, Yolanda G. Green, and, their current director, Courtney Cleveland-Broome.
For a few years, the choir expanded to our Indiana campus under the direction of Iana McClung and Kenya Lacy.
Since 2015, God’s Creation has been a constant group on our Hardin County campus keeping with the momentum of its directors - Yulanda Harris, Yolanda Green, Courtney Cleveland-Broome, and currently James Davis and Sherri Irby.
In 2017, the God’s Creation choirs from all three campuses presented a joint musical with nearly 100 children.
What has been consistent throughout the years is the music of the choir continues to teach children about God, His Son, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit while maintaining and learning about their ethnic heritage. In conjunction with the Children’s Sunday School classes and their home life, many have accepted Jesus as their Savior and been baptized. They proudly list God’s Creation as a vehicle to them learning about Christ.
The choir has also presented original productions that were second to none, complete with staging and costuming. The Christmas and Easter plays drew many to the church to see the young actors and singers put on a first-class production. One year, for a Wednesday night Bible Study hour, they presented the original work entitled, “Hallow Him”.
Even though our names have changed, our love for singing to God has not. May we continue to sing praises to our God through our choir and as we continue to grow up in His Word.
