PGMA's Sunday School Program aims to combine the essentials for our children and youth through our Quran, Arabic, and Islamic Studies classes. The program runs through a typical academic year, starting in September and ending in May, with holidays and breaks following both the Islamic tradition and PG county public school system (please see our Calendar on the Home page for important updates). Below are summaries of each class.ย
To see more details on our standards and curricula, including our adoption of Yaqeen Institute's Curriculum for our older students, please email sunday@pgmamd.orgย
While it is important and noble for one to memorize the Noble Quran, in todayโs day and age, it is more imperative than ever that we understand what Allah SWT is telling us. We must instill within our students the love of Allah SWT through His words.
Objectives:
Students are expected to memorize some of the Quran that will help them pray and understand the basics of the religion.ย
Students are expected to understand the basic Tafseer of the Surah, i.e. the purpose of revelation, how it ties with the Seerah, the lesson(s) behind it, and how it is relevant to their lives and struggles today.
QR Levels: There are 5 levels available, each determined by fluency and proficiency first, then age:
QR1 (KG): Our KG students memorize the basic Surahs required for Salah, along with tying it to the fundamentals of Tawheed.
QR2: Basic/Beginner level. Students memorize short Surahs, with emphasis on tying it to the fundamentals of Tawheed, storytelling & lessons from the Seerah, and application to daily lives.ย
QR3: Students memorize a Surah(s) that is pre-chosen by their teachers at the start of the year, along with a strong emphasis on meaning; Tafseer, storytelling & lessons from the Seerah, and application to daily lives. At the end of the course, students are expected to be able to read any randomly chosen half-page of the Quran in under 2 minutes, with no more than 4 mistakes.
QR4 (Pre-Hifz class): Students practice with reading from the Quran in preparation for Part-Time Hifz, i.e. be familiar with all letters, vowels, harakat, words, etc. As in QR3, students memorize along with a strong emphasis on meaning; Tafseer, storytelling & lessons from the Seerah, and application to daily lives. At the end of the course, students are expected to be able to read any random full-page in 3-4 minutes, with no more than 6 mistakes.
QR5 (Part-Time Hifz): Functions as a Hifz class where students aim to finish as much from the Quran as possible, with a strong emphasis on Tafseer and understanding. Each student will have their own individualized Quran memorization plan. Advanced/Exemplar students may work/volunteer to be TAs/Quran teachers for other levels in certain weeks. To qualify, students are expected to be able to read a randomly chosen page from the Quran in 3-4 minutes (learning outcome from QR4).
Our goal in teaching Arabic is very specific to being able to read the Quran properly, and not the overall language. Having said so, it is recommended that students tie what they are learning in these classes to the Surahs they are memorizing in their QR classes.
Objective: Students are expected to learn the basics of the Arabic language that will enable the student to read and recite the Quran.
Levels: There are 6 levels, each determined by proficiency first, then age:
AR - KG: Our KG students learn the Arabic alphabet.
AR1: Students learn the Arabic alphabet, and learn to recognize the letters in connected form. Other topics covered include Short Vowels (Fatha, Kasra, Damma). At the end of the course, students are expected to be able to read a word of 3 letters with vowels within 10 seconds.
AR2: A continuation on Short Vowels and connected form. Additional topics include Sukoon and Madd letters/Long Vowels (Alif, Waw, Yaa). At the end of the course, students are expected to be able to read longer words, and sentences of maximum 3 words within 20 seconds.
AR3: Students cover topics on Shadda, Tanween, Hamzatul-Wassl, and Rules for Stopping. At the end of the course, students are expected to be able to "speed read", read a sentence (a line from the Quran) in 30 seconds.
AR4 (Pre-Hifz Practice): Taken in conjunction with QR4 (check above). As part of the Pre-Hifz program, Students practice reading from the Quran to be more fluent, while learning some basic rules of Tajweed.
AR5 (Part-time Hifz): Taken in conjunction with QR5 (check above). Students at this level must be capable of reading Quran on their own with minimal assistance, while learning more rules of Tajweed.
We always hear that "Islam is a way of Life". But in order to understand and accept this, one must learn to love Islam so that they live it properly and with pride. Thus, our goal through Islamic studies is to enrich our students with knowledge so that they Learn, Love, and Live the Deen.
Levels: There are 10 levels in total, which are determined by age/grade.ย
KG-8th grade: Each level (and book) corresponds to grade level. The curriculum used is from the Weekend Learning Series' Islamic Studies books.
High school students (ages 14+): Older students will be admitted into a "Halaqa class" which will follow a different curricula written and informed by Yaqeen Institutes' High school Curriculum for Islamic studies.ย
It is meant to be application based, and there are independent projects assigned to ensure that they can live what they learned.ย
Students will also be assigned to take 1 free Islamic course outside of Sunday School, on any topic/program they wish.
Note: these students are not necessarily in PTHifz, but are mature enough to discuss these topics.
Each year the curriculum begins with covering and reviewing the basics of Tawheed and fundamentals, with a few topics on Allah, the Quran, the Prophet (SAW), the Hadith, or Sunnah. With every year, this emphasis increases and is introduced in an age-appropriate manner, and approached from different perspectives.
Several Lessons are devoted to Islamic sciences (fiqh), history, manners, values, and morals so that children grow up with a good understanding of Islamic culture.ย
Age-appropriate moral lessons are covered (i.e. older grades discuss gossip, friendship, peer pressure, dating, indecency, encouraging good and forbidding evil, etc.)
We recognize that we cannot possibly teach our youth everything they need to know about the Deen, and cannot limit our understanding of Islam to the few hours spent in Sunday School.ย
Therefore, we strongly encourage (and incorporate) Islamic Education outside of Sunday School. For more educational resources/opportunities to increase Islamic knowledge outside of Sunday School, check out our Additional Islamic Resources page!
It is important that parents and students understand the guidelines that PGMA's Sunday School runs by. Please look through this document for all necessary information.ย
