Biography

I am a PhD student (Prime Minister Research Fellow) at the Transportation Research and Injury Prevention Centre at the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi, India. I have a degree in Civil Engineering and specialisation in Transportation Engineering, with a focus on Transportation Safety.

In my PhD, I aim to identify road design interventions to improve the safety of cyclists in Indian cities. Currently, as a doctoral student, I am also involved in cycling research projects with my PhD advisor and working with an interdisciplinary research team including injury epidemiologists and anthropologists. I designed and conducted surveys, led a team of surveyors, trained them and provided them with feedback to ensure high-quality standards of responses. I also worked on geotracking data. In my PhD coursework, I learned research designs used in causal inference and impact evaluation. I also gained experience in operationalising survey data analysis using weights and complex sampling methods.

During my Masters in Transportation Engineering at IIT Delhi, I did courses on Transportation Safety and Transportation Planning and learned about system approach, injury metrics, travel demand modeling, data sources, and research methods. In my Master's thesis, I was involved in data extraction from police reports, coding of road traffic crashes in a crash recording format, geolocating crashes and characterising road infrastructure around the crash locations. I learned epidemiological study designs, case-control and case-crossover used in public health research. I operationalised these study designs to investigate risk factors of bicycle fatalities in Delhi.
