"Śrīmad Bhāgavatam (English)"

About the app

The Android app "Śrīmad Bhāgavatam (English)" has been developed to bring to a wider audience the message of the great Vaishnavite text Śrīmad Bhāgavatam. Since smartphones have become ubiquitous and have become the most preferred device for accessing the internet and for seeking information and knowledge, making available the text of Śrīmad Bhāgavatam through this device in a convenient format would help make the message of Śrīmad Bhāgavatam available to a much larger audience especially the younger generation of the population. This app is an assemblage of many different formats in which the great puranic text has been rendered:

  1. Text in Devanagari, courtesy the volunteers who built up the monumental website https://sanskritdocuments.org/ which is a colossal compilation of Sanskrit Documents covering a wide range of topics.

  2. Text in IAST (International Alphabet of Sanskrit Transliteration), again courtesy the volunteers who built up the monumental website https://sanskritdocuments.org/.

  3. English translation by Anand Aaadhar in the tradition of ISKCON (International Society for Krishna Consciousness). Anand Aadhar, also known as Anand Aaadhar Prabhu, is the spiritual name of René P. B. A. Meijer, who was originally a clinical psychologist, born in the Netherlands in 1954, and who later turned to the philosophy of yoga after he was initiated to yoga in India in 1989. The developer of this app could not locate in the internet the English translation of Bhgavata Mahatmyam (Glories of Bhagavatam) by Anand Aadhar. So, instead, a translation by Satyanarayana Dasa in the ISKCON tradition has been included. This translation is available HERE.

  4. English translation by G. V. Tagare in the tradition of Indian critical scholarship. "G.V. Tagare, born in 1911, was a Member of the Maharashtra Education Service, and had been a Professor of Education, in the Government Secondary Training College, Kolhapur. A versatile scholar, untiring researcher and prolific author, Dr. Tagare has written on diverse themes from Indology, linguistics and education. In addition, his published work includes translations of over half-a-dozen Mahapuranas, critical editions of Sanskrit texts, and histories (in Marathi language) of Prakrit, Pali and Assamese literatures. Dr. Tagare also has the credit of discovering several old, unpublished manuscripts: in both Marathi and Sanskrit."

  5. Recitation by Yashoda Kurara Dasa rendered in a professional manner with a regional accent. Yashoda Kumara Dasa, who has been trained in Sanskrit and music since the age of seven, took up the practice of Bhakti Yoga at the age of fourteen. When he was twenty-four he started recording devotional scriptures and since then recorded more than three thousand stotras or prayers of the Vaishnava Sampradaya. He has also authored of more than nine hundred Sanskrit stotras and songs, including various Sahasranamas, Dvadasha Nama Stotras, Ashtakas etc.

  6. Recitation by Jayshree Gopal, a profoundly elegant and simple rendering of Srimad Bhagavatam created to help beginners to read along with experts and also to enjoy the chanting while going about their activities.
