We went on two hikes on Creekside Trail and Blackwater Creek Trail in order to observe our surroundings and document wildlife for iNaturalist. In the classroom, we explored Zooniverse and worked in groups in order to contribute to ongoing projects such as Galaxy Zoo, Penguin Watch, and Placenta Profiles. In addition, we examined studies that have engaged participatory scientists to understand the potential impact of our contributions!
We visited Claytor Nature Study Center to contribute to an ongoing insect population study, participate in green yoga, and explore the wildlife of the nature center. The next day, we went to the lab to examine the insects collected from the traps in order to collect data to contribute to the insect study. In addition, we led an afternoon class and a teacher day class to spread awareness of participatory science! We ended the week by attending a meteorology and storm chasing presentation by George Flickinger.
We went to Ivy Creek Park and worked with Morgan and Michael from Lynchburg Water Resources to learn about water quality and macroinvertebrate insects. That same afternoon, we led our final afternoon class about the wetlands at the former College Lake. In class, we spent time working on our independent and collective final presentations. We also went on our last class trip to Hollins Mill Park!
