Language is the one art form we all engage in every day. Some people are blessed with an abundance of natural writing talent and learn to wield the written word as deftly as Michelangelo employed his chisel. However, even those not so naturally endowed can master the mechanics of grammar, syntax, style, and voice in order to have them at their beck and call. In fact, it is essential that we each learn to do so, because the ability to write well endows the writer with a singular power. The right turn of phrase can work magic in the heart of a beloved, silence a bitter adversary, make allies of enemies, move the complacent to contemplation and the slothful to action. Words can move mountains and transform hearts.
It is my mission to help my students harness the power of writing and to come to respect and even love the written and spoken word. I aim to teach my students to savor words as they roll off the tongue and tumble from their lips, to sample the flavors of the literary bounty, to join in the feast that is the English language.
