During my graduate studies at the Duke Marine Lab, two main objectives evolved from my major project (MP): 1) To intentionally create spaces for artistic expression in my academic community, and 2) To collaboratively communicate the concept of entanglement through artwork. I hypothesized that if I could create these spaces for collaborative artmaking and share those works with others, then people may be inspired to continue and creating, reflecting, and healing.
To me, entanglement was more than the literal threat to marine life. It meant entangling yourself with nature, reestablishing your connection with each other, and reflexive thinking. My project relies on entanglement also being defined as "a circumstance which complicates or confuses a matter."
Entanglement is a co-created community zine made up of creative contributions of more than 20 distinct media types from more than 30 artists. I also organized community events, "Collaging & Connecting" and "Doodle & Discuss" that brought people together to make art, challenge our ways of thinking, strengthen interpersonal connections, and meditate on the concept of entanglement.
