FAQ

I missed the Mandatory Parent/Athlete Info Meeting. Where can I get all of the important information?

Please email Coach Anna with any conflicts to this data ASAP

How many athletes are on each team?

Team sizes fluctuate each year based on tryout scores and skill level.

Do returners have to try out?

Yes. Returning members are not guaranteed a spot on the team.  Judges will not have any information to signify that any cheer candidates have prior cheer or dance knowledge of any sort.

What will I be judged on?

You will learn everything during the Tryout Week, June 4th/5th  Tutorial videos will be released the Tuesday after Day 1 of instruction.  You will have the entire week to practice, ask questions, and even submit a trial video to Coach Anna.  Here is a glimpse at what you will learn: one cheer, jumps, and dance choreography.

Do my grades, attendance, attitude, and discipline record affect my eligibility?

Yes!

How can I start preparing for tryouts?

Gently stretch your body everyday (don't forget to warm up). Look up YouTube tutorials.

I have conflicts with weekly practices during the school year. Can I still be on the team?

No. An athlete may not be a part of the team if they cannot fully participate in weekly practices. Circumstances such as "I have to leave practice 15 minutes early every Thursday for dance class" are not permitted. This is WIAA ruling.

I have conflicts with summer events. What do I do?

Thoroughly explain your conflict via email to the coaching staff.  Include dates, a description of your conflict, and your plan to keep up with the team. Camps are mandatory.

Do we get to keep our uniforms?

If you are selected to be a SQSP Member, you will check out and return some uniform pieces, and you will keep some uniform pieces. Details can be found in the Payment Policy in the Handbook.

Are Cheer and Dance considered one big team?

Each team will be separate, but we hope all teams will love and support each other like one big family. Cheer and Dance will be practicing at the same time during the school year, but in different locations with different coaches. There may be some exceptions and we're hoping that all teams will collaborate for select routines.

Why can't I be on both Cheer and Dance?

We are currently looking for a qualified and motivated dance team coach. Email us if you're interested or know someone who is. Until then, our Storm Spirit family just consists of football and basketball cheer, and many spring community and fundraising commitments as well.

Practice times conflict, and it's just too big of a commitment.  You are more than welcome to try one team for a year, and then try the other the next year.

What will the summer camps be like?

Summer camps will likely not be happening due to COVID-19 and social distancing policies.  Stay tuned for alternative camp information in late summer or early fall.  We're hopeful that something similar can still happen! :)

There will be a separate camp for each team. Each camp session will help develop skills and promote team unity. Cheer camp is hosted at Northwest Silver Stars, and members will be receiving stunting instruction from the staff at Stars, and the other instruction from SQSP coaches.

When should I plan vacations for the 2024-2025 seasons (if I make the team)?

Please plan vacations during school breaks, such as: Thanksgiving Break, Winter Break, and Spring Break. Other vacation times risk conflicting with games/performances/competitions.

Can I be on a Spirit team and participate during another SQHS sport during the same season?

No.

Can I be on a Spirit team and participate in SQHS band/orchestra/choir?

Yes, if there are performance conflicts, you are expected to split your commitments evenly. It is your responsibility to keep track of this.

Cheerleaders will have many conflicts if they are also in band. Talk with your teacher to see if participating in both will be a possibility.
