I created an SSIS package with Oracle data source and SQL Server destination ok. In fact through an SQL query I want to export data from an oracle table to an SQL server table. At this level everything is fine.

Importing packages is a quick and easy way to install packages and to change the storage format of packages. However, you should be aware that the import feature does not include package dependencies. If your packages have dependencies, or they rely on ancillary files that you have added to the Integration Services project to deploy with the packages, then you should consider building a deployment utility and importing the packages by using the Package Installation Wizard.

In SQL Server Management Studio, you can run packages immediately by using the Execute Package Utility or schedule the package to run in a step in a SQL Server Agent job. This chapter focuses on the Execute Package utility. To learn more about running packages in a job, see Chapter 8, "Inside Scheduling Tools."

The Execute Package Utility (see Figure 16-50) is a graphical interface on the dtexec command prompt utility; it includes the richness of the dtexec command line options, but it is more intuitive to use. The dtexec command prompt utility configures and runs packages that are saved to SQL Server, the package store, or the file system in a command prompt window. The utility provides access to package configuration and execution features. For example, you can set the values of properties, add logging capability, and specify a different package configuration file. If you are not comfortable running packages from the command prompt or you want to run packages without leaving SQL Server Management Studio, the Execute Package Utility is the tool of choice.

In the Execute Package Utility you can run the packages as they are, or you can use the pages in the user interface to modify the command line options that dtexec uses to run the package. The changes that you make apply only to the current execution instance; they are not saved.

You use the dtexec command prompt utility to execute Integration Services packages from the command prompt window. The dtexec command prompt utility supports access to package configuration and execution features. For example, in the command line for dtexec you can configure the package to use checkpoints, use a different configuration than the one specified when the package was designed, and specify the number of executable files that the package can run concurrently. The dtexec utility can run on packages saved to the sysdtspackages90 table in the msdb SQL Server database, the package store, or the file system.

You use the dtutilcommand prompt utility to manage Integration Services packages. The utility can copy, move, delete, or verify the existence of a package. You can run the utility to perform these actions on packages saved to the sysdtspackages90 table in the msdb SQL Server database, the package store, or the file system. The dtutil command prompt utility does not support command files or redirection.

First, this chapter covered Business Intelligence Development Studio, the IDE, in which you create Integration Services projects to manage your Integration Services solutions. We recently purchased the SQL agent for MSSQL db's (we already had the SQL agent for Oracle). I have a user now asking about support for SSIS (SQL server integration services). I honestly have no idea. I'm the UC4 Administrator - I install the agent, I get it functional and know how to create a job that uses it and connects to an MSSQL db, but beyond that - not really my area of expertise.

We are running SS 2014. When I create a dts package that access data on another server it runs if I use the Execute Package Utility because my Windows logon has rights to access the Excel spreadsheet on the other server. When it runs under SQL Server Agent it fails because (I'm assuming) SQL Server Agent does not have the permissions to access the folder on the other server. My Windows login is part of a group that does have access.

I changed the SQL Server Agent account to my own domain account and received the error below. This is the same error I get when i create a proxy with my domain account and use it as the Run As in the step. Again, if I run it using the package execution tool it runs fine.

In order to be able to access files on another server or file share - you have to use the UNC path name. If you are using a mapped drive - and running the package under your account, then the mapped drive will work because the package is running in the context of your account and can see the mapped drive.

EDIT:The packages on the two servers were the same, both only trying to access a database on the SQL Server that's on the machine Integration Services is (ie. no remote servers accessed, not even through linked server) and file resources (delete and copy an SQLite database file which is later accessed through ODBC) on the same machine. Also, the proxies were given all the necessary permissions required (they can access the databases and the files). The tasks were removed one by one from the packages to see if they were the reason that prevented the job from running until there was nothing left there. Currently the task doesn't do anything and has no connection managers remaining. Still, the job fails with the same error messages as before.

I had an issue with my 64 bit SQL Server 2008R2 running on a Windows 2008 server that I needed to run an SSIS package on that took data from an OLE Data source, did a Data Conversion on, and finally pushed it out to MS Excel. I created a stored procedure on this server and instance of SQL Server only to have it fail with a conflict error message telling me that 64 bit SQL Server was not compatible with the 32 bit instance of Excel. I correctly configured the SSIS project properties for Debugging to Run64BitRuntime = False and had it running on my local machine, but once deployed to a different environment, it was failing. The server had 2 DTEXECs - one 64 bit (the Default one) and a 32 bit one in the C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft SQL Server\100\DTS\Binn folder. FYI, when calling the full path for the 32-bit DTEXEC in the stored procedure, place quotes around the entire path:

When planning for memory needs, it is critical to understand how SQL Server Integration Services uses memory. SSIS will allocate memory from the unallocated system memory for each package executed, and surrenders that memory shortly after the package completes its execution. The memory allocated for SSIS package executions runs in the SSIS execution runtime process (ISServerExec.exe, if you are executing the package from the SSIS catalog).

There are some design patterns in which the entire set of data resides in SSIS memory during data flow processing. The most common of these is when using the lookup transformation in full cache mode (the default setting). In this setup, all of the data from the table or query used for the lookup will be cached in SSIS memory for the duration of the execution. This design allows the lookup transform to make its comparison directly in memory (rather than going back to the source each time, but also adds to the memory footprint of the package. The memory required for the lookup transformations is in addition to the memory allocated for the buffers described above.

I have a handful of clients who run dedicated SSIS servers, but the vast majority of SSIS environments run Integration Services on an existing SQL Server that serves other roles. In fact, a lot of SSIS loads run on the same server where the data is extracted from or loaded to. In a case like this, you have to configure memory (as well as CPU and I/O throughput) to make sure that server has enough elbow room to both run the SSIS packages and perform the database engine functions for the underlying CRUD operations of the ETL.

Whether you are configuring a parent-child SSIS architecture, or just trying to schedule all of your ETL jobs to run in a specific maintenance window, be aware of how many packages will be running at once to avoid memory issues.
