SPT 2023 satellite symposium:

Technology and Mobility - To realize a future in which everyone can move freely

Technology has greatly expanded the range and speed of human mobility and changed how we think and live in our life sphere. Today, the development of technologies, such as artificial intelligence (AI) and self-driving cars, has brought about new scenarios and is expected to change urban life and business activities significantly. The relationship between people and technology is being questioned. At the International Conference of Society for Philosophy and Technology (SPT), in Yoyogi, Tokyo, from June 7 to 10, a wide range of discussions will be featured on this topic. This symposium, a related event of the SPT conference, aims to discuss the present and future challenges of “technology and mobility,” including automated driving, from diverse perspectives, such as philosophy of technology, ethics, urban planning, and robot design.

In addition, special attention will be given to the role of the public in the development of technologies. Of particular interest is the role of citizens in technological development. How can we change the human–technology relationship to realize human well-being? Should urban environments be reconstructed to meet the self-driving vehicle? Are these technologies and environments human-centric? Will we be able to treat AI (as a responsible entity) like humans? What does the term “human-centric” imply, and who decides it? These questions are not only interdisciplinary but also transcend academics and are highly culture-dependent.

In this symposium, cutting-edge philosophers of technology from multiple countries, who are tackling these questions, will converge in dialogue with Japanese technologists, delving into the quest for an open technology landscape. It will be fascinating to see how people from different fields and cultures think about the relationship between technology, human beings, and even citizens. Furthermore, we are planning to have lectures (and considering demonstrations) from the venue, the National Museum of Emerging Science and Innovation (Miraikan). We hope that by engaging the public in such cross-disciplinary and international discussions, we can pave the way for more creative approaches.

国際技術哲学会(SPT)開催記念シンポジウム

技術とモビリティ─誰もが自在に移動できる未来を実現するために

技術は、人間の移動の範囲を拡大し、短い時間での移動を可能にし、生活世界における私たちのもの考え方や生き方を変化させてきました。今日、AIや自動運転車などの新たな技術の発達は新たな状況をもたらし、今後、都市や農村の生活や企業活動に大きな変化をもたらすと予想されています。モビリティに即してあらためて人間と技術との関係のあり方が問われているのです。6月7日～10日に東京・代々木で開催される「国際技術哲学会（SPT）」では、このテーマについて幅広い議論が取り上げられる予定です。本シンポジウムは、SPT大会の関連イベントとして、自動運転を含む「技術とモビリティ」の現在と未来の課題を、技術哲学、倫理学、都市計画、ロボットデザインなど、多様な視点から議論することを目的としています。

とりわけ注目されるのは、技術開発における市民の役割です。人間の幸福を実現するために、人間とテクノロジーの関係をどのように変えていけばいいのでしょうか。自動運転車に対応するためどのような都市環境をつくりあげていくべきなのでしょうか。近い将来、AIを人間と同じような責任ある存在として扱うことができるのでしょうか。こうした技術や環境は人間中心的なのでしょうか。あるいは誰が人間中心的かどうかを決めることができるのでしょうか。このような問いは個々の学問領域を超え、さらには学問という枠を超え、私たちの文化に大きく依存するものでもあります。

このシンポジウムでは、こうした問いに取り組む海外の最先端の技術哲学者と日本の技術者とが対話し、技術をいかに開かれたものにしていくかを議論します。技術や人間、さらには市民の関わりについて、異なる分野や文化の人びとがどのように考えるかが分かる興味深い内容になると思います。また、会場である日本科学未来館からも講演（実演も検討中）をしていただく予定でいます。このような分野横断的かつ国際的な議論を一般の方々と交わすことで、より創造的なアプローチへの道を切り開くことができればと思います。
