2022 Spring Zone 7 Meeting
Meeting Announcement
The Spring 2022 Zone Meeting for SPS Zone 7 was held in person on April 1-2, 2021, on the campus of Youngstown State University in conjunction with the Spring 2022 Meeting of the Eastern Great Lakes Section of the American Physical Society (EGLS APS). The meeting was locally hosted by Youngstown State University SPS chapter. There was no cost for students to attend the zone meeting, but you did need to register at the meeting's web site, which also contains information about travel and accommodations.
You need to set up a free APS account to register for the EGLS APS meeting. Note that free APS membership is available for students who are first-time APS members (yes, it's really free!), so you might as well join!
Students who are not presenting at the EGLS APS meeting do not need to be an APS or SPS member to participate in the SPS zone meeting activities (except for the banquet). But, of course, we encourage all students to join SPS to take advantage of its great benefits!
Some EGLS APS Travel Grants were available for students (mostly undergraduate students). The grants will cover up to $100 in expenses for transportation and lodging. The application due date for these grants was March 26, 2022. If you would like to attend the banquet but cannot afford the banquet fee ($20 for students), then please contact the Zone Councilor.
Zone Meeting Schedule
Zone meeting events were largely scheduled around or in conjunction with other events on the EGLS APS meeting schedule to enable students to attend those sessions.
Friday, April 1, 2022
12:30 pm - 3:50 pm EGLS APS Plenary Talks
After an introduction, plenary talks were given by
Al Shapere, University of Kentucky and Institute for Advanced Studies, "Quantum Codes from Condensed Matter to Quantum Gravity" (1:00-1:50 pm)
Alaina Green, Joint Quantum Institute, University of Maryland, "How to Use a Small Quantum Computer and Why" (2:00-2:50 pm)
Sean McWilliams, West Virginia University, "Analytic Black-Hole Binary Mergers: Waveforms and Kicks from First Principles" (3:00-3:50 pm)
Abstracts are available on the meeting's website.
4:00-4:30 pm: Zone 7 Meeting Kick-off Event
The kick-off event gave students the chance to meet students and faculty from other chapters around the zone. Associate Zone Councilor, Rebecca Abbott-McCune, and Zone Councilor, Prof. Ronald Kumon, provided an overview of the latest news, events, and programs from the SPS National Council. We livestreamed the kick-off event via Zoom for people who were not able to make it to the meeting in person. An edited video recording of the Zoom session is available on the SPS Zone 7 YouTube page. The slides from the presentation have also been posted. At the kick-off event, we had representation in person from Youngstown State University and Kettering University and remotely from Marshall University. (Unfortunately the plenary sessions ran over into the designated time for the kick-off event and into the time of the poster sessions, limiting in-person attendance.)
4:30-6:00 pm: EGLS APS Contributed Posters Session
A total of 12 posters were presented, and 8 of the presenters were undergraduate students from Marietta College, Ohio Northern University, Saginaw Valley State University, and the University of Dayton.
6:30-8:50 pm: EGLS APS Banquet and Plenary Speaker ($20 for students; must pre-register)
After the buffet dinner, YSU alumnus David Gohlke, Ph.D., from Argonne National Laboratory spoke on the topic of "Decarbonization Pathways in Transportation."
Saturday, April 2, 2022
8:00-10:00 am: EGLS APS Contributed Talks

10:15 am -1:30 pm: EGLS APS Plenary Talks
Victor Galitski, University of Maryland, "Many-Body Quantum Chaos and Emergence of Statistical Mechanics" (10:15-11:15 am)
