15th Sunday after Trinity
Dear St Paul’s
In our sermons based on Jesus’ seven ‘I AM’ statements we have looked at his claim to be
the bread of life, and then the light of the world. Encapsulated in these two contrasting
images we have the earth and the heavens, the finite and transcendent, Jesus’ humanity
and his divinity. Over the next two sermons we are back on earth, out in the fields with the
sheep, immersed in the common yet essential role of sheep keeping. In John 10 we have
two ‘I AM’ statements in quick succession, which are linked together in their imagery. Jesus
first says ‘I am the gate for the sheep’ (v.7) and then ‘I am the good shepherd’ (v.11).
Shepherds were a common sight throughout the Greek-speaking world in the first century,
and they weren’t renowned for their gentility. Out in all weathers for weeks on end in the
wilderness, herding their flocks from pasture to pasture, personal hygiene was probably not
top priority, and the role was quite isolating, making them a bit cut off from civilised society.
In placing himself into this hard, disparaged role Jesus was identifying himself with an
underclass of his society. It also chimed with his listeners as figures like Moses and David
were remembered as shepherds and leaders of the Jewish people. Jesus was placing himself
in their shoes, saying that he, like these previous heroes of the faith, would lead his people
well. In likening himself to ‘the gate’, he was referencing the sheep pen, which the sheep
were counted into at night and out of in the morning. This provided a safe place for the
sheep from attacks from wild animals. A good shepherd, who really cared for his sheep,
would lie down across the entrance to the pen, and be on alert against attack. The shepherd
would bridge the gap, becoming the gate, and protect the sheep with his own life. This is
another powerful analogy, which describes Jesus’ character and mission.
The choice that we need to make is whether to trust Jesus at his word. He stands at the gate
and offers us a place of security, found through him. He promises to lead us to green
pastures and beside still waters, to restore our souls, and to keep nudging us along in those
dark valleys we go through.
God bless
Rev Emma

they may be found steadfast in faith and active in service;
through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord,
who is alive and reigns with you,
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever. Amen
(or)
Lord God,
defend your Church from all false teaching
and give to your people knowledge of your truth,

St Paul’s Winter course:
Discovering Christianity CLICK to see full article
Discovering Christianity is an eight-week opportunity to explore the basics of Christianity. During the course we’ll be asking such questions as: What is Faith? What is Christianity? Why Church? We’ll be asking and trying to answer those questions via the book Discovering Christianity: A Guide for the Curious written by the former Archbishop of Canterbury, Rowan Williams.
Discovering Christianity: A Guide for the Curious is a short, accessible book. It introduces basic ideas of Christianity in short, clearly written chapters, with plenty of scope for good discussion.
We’ll start on Wednesday, 10th September at the usual time of 7.00pm at church. The tentative schedule is as follows:
Weds, 24th Sept. No meeting
3 Weds, 1st Oct. What is theology?
4 Weds, 8th Oct. Why Church?
5 Weds, 15th Oct Why Scripture?
6 Weds, 22nd Oct. Why tradition?
7 Weds, 29th Oct. Why reason?
8 Weds, 5th Nov. Why does it matter?
Discovering Christianity is available from all the usual outlets for about £10.
Because this is a book-based course, those wishing to join should be prepared to read the relevant chapter before each session – it won’t take long!!

Christmas Cards
Over the next few weeks we will once again be selling Christmas cards on behalf of Martin House Children's Hospice. If you would like to support this worthy cause, please see us in the lounge after the 10.30 service when we will have order forms and samples of the cards. Payment will be required with orders (cheque made payable to "Martin House" preferred) and the last date for orders will be Sunday 27 October. We are pleased to say that the price is unchanged at £3.75 for a pack of ten cards. We already have a good stock of cards at home, but if more are required we will personally collect further supplies from the hospice, near Wetherby, thus avoiding postage charges. With thanks for your continuing support.

SPRING (St Pauls Reaches Into New Growth) Gardening Group 2025
Friday mornings 9.30-12noon
Since coming out of Lockdown in 2021, a group of us began to attend to our church grounds and over the last four years the difference we have made is huge, turning a fairly barren and neglected wilderness into something beautiful, accessible and more biologically diverse. Now that Spring has officially sprung, we are back, and looking for more volunteers!
If you are interested in joining this vital part of our church ministry we meet each week 9.30-12noon (or whenever you can get there). There are tools available at church, or you can bring your own if you prefer. The jobs that we do are: weeding; pruning; planting; litter picking; grass cutting; path strimming – whatever takes your fancy. We are open to all ages and abilities, the main criteria is being happy to be outside in all weathers and to literally roll up your sleeves and work.
Speak to Rev Emma or Sandra Watts if you want more information, otherwise just turn up when you can.
