Texas is ranked first in the country for a reason, and they proved it this weekend in Austin especially in game 3 in convincing fashion. The Longhorns beat the Tigers 14-2 in 7 innings to finish the series.
Ike Irish was phenomenal all series long and started Sunday with a solo home run and his team leading 11th one of the year to get the Tigers going but after that it was all Texas.
Texas would then go on to score nine unanswered runs with five of them being in the bottom of the first. Bub Terrell would stop this with a double and scoring on a wild pitch in seventh. Texas put up five runs in the bottom of the 7th to run rule the Tigers. Texas finished the day scoring 14 runs on 15 hits including four homeruns. The Longhorns threw three pitchers and only gave up four hits.
“At the end of the day, maybe we could’ve made a play in the first, but they were on the fastball and were swinging it great,” head coach Butch Thompson. “I think we scored one run for three games outside of the (six) off Ike Irish’s bat, which Ike had a great weekend. You have to create some offense at some point, and we just never could.”
As Butch Thompson said Ike Irish scored or batted in six of the seven Auburn runs on the weekend which is incredible including four homeruns. The Longhorn pitching staff was dominant, but the Tigers could never seem to get the bats going especially on Sunday.
“We have to look ourselves in the mirror and respect that guy, because that guy has gotten us to this point,” Deric Fabian said. “Obviously it wasn’t our weekend, but the great news about baseball is we get a chance to bounce back on Tuesday. We’re looking forward to the next opportunity.”
The Tigers now sit at 27-13 (9-9) and return home for four games next week, starting with No. 13 Georgia Tech on Tuesday at 7 p.m. CT, then a three-game series versus Mississippi State.
