Any excitement for any sports fan as halted. It was March 11 when people started to realize how bad the coronavirus is, and how it can affect sports. Minutes before the game started between the Utah Jazz and the Oklahoma City Thunder, director of Thunder medical services, Donnie Strack came sprinting on the court to meet with the referees. Players started to get hyped jumping around and elbow bumping, until the song they were jumping to come on for a second time. Chris Paul told ESPN he asked the Utah bench, “What’s wrong with Rudy?” Seconds later players were told to go back to their benches. The referees called over both of the coaches, Billy Donovan and Quinn Snyder, probably telling them that they were delaying the game. After the brief discussion players left the floor and fans were notified by the jumbotron that the game is going to be delayed. That point nobody knew what was happening. Coronavirus outbreaks were happening early morning and late last night. Nobody was aware in that Jazz locker room somebody had coronavirus. Fans didn’t know that one player they were watching and cheering on could threaten their lives. Word broke out that the first time NBA All-star in 2020 and 2x defensive player of the year (2018,2019) Rudy Gobert had tested positive to the Coronavirus. 5 minutes later at 9:32 PM, the NBA suspends their season for the indefinite future. Now the whole sports world is going bonkers. Leagues are debating whether to do the same thing the NBA did by suspending their season or playing the games with zero fans. The next morning the NBA- G league suspends their season indefinitely. At 10:32 AM, the ATP suspends the men’s professional tennis tour for six weeks. And then the huge news that makes everybody more scared. Teammate of Rudy Gobert, Donovan Mitchell, test positive to the coronavirus. Just about and an hour later the MLS suspends their season for at least a month. 7 minutes later the Big Ten cancels their basketball tournament. At about 12 the NHL suspends their season for the indefinite future. Five minutes later, In ten minutes, the SEC and the ACC cancel their tournaments just like the Big Ten did. At 12:43 PGA announces all events across the tour are closed to fans beginning Friday at The Players Championship until April 5th. At about 1:40 the MLB cancels the rest of spring training and 2 weeks into Opening Day. You can see through all of these events that since the NBA canceled their season because one of their athletes got it, it released a wrinkle effect on all of the major sports leagues like the MLB and the NHL to suspend their seasons. It just shows you how serious and how dangerous this coronavirus is. How do we respond as sports fans? How can we wait around for probably at least a month without a single live sports game to watch. It’s more than that. The coronavirus is a worldwide problem. People die every day in most countries. People don’t want that to happen to you, your friends, or your family. And I think we all know that these sports leagues didn’t want that either. Even though sports owners and commissioners it is all about publicity and making money, they realized that coronavirus affects us. And they kind of told us that you can go on without sports for at least a month. It all matters about the safety of America and the world. Even though this might be a long process, without sports, without traveling, maybe even getting quarantined, we all have to wait and be patient because when this virus is over sports will be back on, you can travel wherever you want, and you can walk around out of your house with friends without worrying about getting sick or possibly dying. Just play the waiting game.
