I hear many people say seasons 1-3 are the golden age of Spongebob and that it declines after that, but where does it truly go too bad to the point of intolerance, in your opinion? How far into the series would the average modern-spongebob-hater quit watching?

A very good way to start the series. It introduced us to the main cast in funny ways, such as SpongeBob's meeting with Sandy in her treedome ("I NEEEEED IT!") and Plankton tapping into SpongeBob's brain to get a Krabby Patty ("shut your mouth, you mediocre clarinet player"). It has a really fresh feeling due to obviously, it being the first season, but also as a result of many simple but effective plot lines that set up the world of Bikini Bottom. In the later seasons, all of the seasons and characters have long been established, so we lose a bit of this fresh feeling.

The animation in this season is noticeably different from the other seasons due to that this is the only season to be cel-animated. This isn't my favorite of the animation styles they've used in the series (feels too dull, and some of the character designs are a bit primitive compared to the rest of the show), but I can't blame them, since this is the first season and they had nothing to compare it to. Plus, it was 1999.

Most of the episodes in this season were very entertaining, packed with some of the classic moments we've come to love. However, I do think that there are some episodes that were a bit duller than usual and don't remain as very memorable episodes. These are just a minority, however.

In the beginning of the second season, we see a noticeable change in the animation as they ditch cel animation. This leads to more refined character designs when compared to season 1. Compare his appearance in the first season to how he looks by season 2. It's quite a bit cleaner. I've seen some fans prefer the older design, but this newer design is better in my opinion, although I like both.

Most of the episodes in season 1 were very good but not really outstanding, save for a handful. Season 2 changed that quite a bit, as we began to get some of the most brilliantly written episodes of the entire series, packed with many of the one-liners people quote today, almost two decades after this season aired. And unlike the first season (which had an ever so small amount of duds), I think all of the episodes in this season are good. Yes, even Dumped and I'm with Stupid! The comedic writing is what makes all of these episodes so good and will continue to make the show so good.

Unbelievably, the show got even better in season 3, despite having already been so good. The first half of season 3 is probably some of the funniest television ever written. Years after these episodes came out, I can still watch them and laugh the whole way through and even fill in some lines that I know are coming because the show is just that quotable. I've already mentioned how brilliant the writing is, but I'd also like to give props to the voice actors because the line delivery is a lot of what makes these lines so good. For example, Plankton's line in The Algae's Always Greener ("That's just an ordinary Krabby -- OH MY GOODNESS! SQUIDWARD!") would not have been as funny without Mr. Lawrence's fantastic delivery.

The second half, although still very top notch, is a bit worse than the first half. This is mostly due to the specials, which are not bad at all (like season 2, I think all of the episodes of season 3 are good) but are weaker than the rest of the season. For Party Pooper Pants and Ugh, this is mainly attributed to the relatively dull Patchy segments (the animated segments are top notch), and for The Sponge Who Could Fly, the reverse is true. The second half still is brilliant however, and even contains my favorite episode of the entire series (The Camping Episode).

Many attribute this as the start of the show's decline since the creator, Stephen Hillenburg, left before its start. I agree that it was not as good as the first three seasons, but it's definitely not the show's downfall. Many of the episodes, mostly in the earlier portion of the season, felt more like season 3 episodes due to the still brilliant humor, and Krusty Towers, which came towards the middle, is recognized as one of the best episodes of the entire series, even while factoring in seasons 1-3.

That said, there were a handful more of weak episodes. Squid Wood is the first really bad episode of the show, and there were a few more disappointments. A lot of the episodes are in that "good" zone, where they are still very enjoyable, even for adults, but lack some of the wit that seasons 2-3 had. Some of these episodes are New Leaf, That's No Lady, Hocus Pocus, Rule of Dumb, and Best Frenemies. I still like all of these episodes, but it's harder for them to hold up with the previous seasons. Overall, this is still a very enjoyable season however.

This season is comparable to season 4, but it is considerably more spread out in terms of quality. The bad episodes were fairly worse, but the good episodes were better, and this season had a whole bunch of episodes that seemed to regain that seasons 2-3 wit in their writing. Examples include Spy Buddies, Krabs a la Mode, Slimy Dancing, and Sing a Song of Patrick, all of which are among some of my favorites of the entire series and never fail to give me a good laugh. This season doesn't have too many weak episodes, but the ones that are weak are REALLY BAD. I point towards Waiting for evidence, which is by far the worst episode to this point. To Love a Patty and Atlantis SquarePantis are also terrible episodes. However, the amount of brilliant episodes is enough to cancel out some of these true stinkers.

You can notice SpongeBob's voice is a bit higher in this season (and the end of season 4) than it was before. This has bugged some people, although I don't personally mind. Some people have complained about gross-out humor in a handful of episodes, particularly Fungus Among Us (which I don't mind) and To Love a Patty (okay yeah, that one's awful). But for most of the season, it's not a problem.

Season 6 is where I think the show really begins to decline. The first half of this season is not too bad. Aside from a few episodes (The Splinter...), the episodes are fairly humorous, although not quite as so as seasons 1-5. A lot of these are comparable to the latter half of season 5, although a bit worse. The second half, on the other hand, is really bad. Starting at episode 112b (Choir Boys), there's a string of episodes that can be described by varying dull, mediocre, terrible, and abysmal, with the notable exception of Chum Bucket Supreme, which feels like a lost script from season 3 they found.

Season 7 continued what season 6 did wrong and drove it into the ground. The show really bottomed out in the first half, with many abysmal episodes such as A Pal for Gary, which is basically the reverse Band Geeks in terms of fan popularity. The first half has many depraved plotlines that are hard to even watch. The ones that aren't depraved are just stupid, such as Yours, Mine and Mine, which really made me feel like I was watching Nick Jr. since it was just that stupid.

The second half was less bad, but still bad. Instead of depraved or stupid plotlines, they were just extremely dull and unmemorable. There were still a handful of really bad episodes (Hide and Then What Happens? is another Nick Jr.-feeling episode), and SpongeBob feels more stupid/childish than ever. For the most part, however, a lot of episodes were just forgettable. Seasons 1-3 and most of 4-5 were memorable in a good way, and seasons 6-7 and a few episodes in 4-5 were memorable in a bad way. However, most of the second half of season 7 is not memorable at all, which I guess is an improvement. It is still by no means good, however. This season is definitely the worst of the show.

The best way to describe this season is a light at the end of the tunnel. The first few episodes were a massive improvement over the abominations in season 7. They weren't as humorous as seasons 1-5, but in general, they were a lot more fun to watch than most of seasons 6-7, such as Sentimental Sponge, which has a funny plotline about SpongeBob becoming a hoarder. A lot of the episodes, however, retained what I said about season 7 in terms of being very forgettable. Even though I've seen all of the episodes (and a lot of them many times), it's still sometimes hard to remember that episodes like Barnacle Face and Bubble Troubles exist.

The middle of the season is just a string of very middle-of-the-road episodes, with not a lot I find bad (although many fans would beg to differ considering episodes such as Pet Sitter Pat, which I just find mixed but many fans hate). Towards the latter portion, there are several more entertaining episodes. These aren't really all that funny, but in terms of plot, they are more interesting to watch. As examples, I point towards Chum Fricassee, Move It or Lose It, For Here or To Go, Fiasco!, Home Sweet Rubble, and Glove World R.I.P.

The bad episodes of this season are much better than those of season 7. The only episode I could consider on par with the worst of that season is Face Freeze!, another very stupid episode. The best of this season are not extremely good, but they are still enjoyable episodes.

9A is very middle of the road. Aside from the switch to HD occurring in this season, it is stylistically identical to season 8. A lot of the episodes are somewhat bland and forgettable, but not actually bad like in seasons 6-7. Examples include Extreme Spots, which I barely remember anything about. The really bad episodes (and really good episodes) are minimal. Many criticize the episodes Squid Baby and Little Yellow Book, but I honestly enjoyed both of them. Plankton's Pet is also another episode regarded to be very good. The last episode of 9A (in production order, rather than airing order), is SpongeBob You're Fired, which is regarded as one of the worst specials of the entire show. I didn't find it horrible, but it's still kinda bad. 2351a5e196
