Core Competencies

Personal and Social Core Competencies

The British Columbia curriculum considers the content that students need to learn, but it places significant emphasis on core competencies. Core competencies are "sets of intellectual, personal, and social and emotional proficiencies that all students need in order to engage in deep, lifelong learning" (BC Curriculum). The core competencies are separated into three categories: Thinking; Communication; and Personal and Social. The poems within this site have been selected due to their relevance to the Personal and Social Core Competency, which focuses on identity and relationships to other people and the environment around us. This core competency is further broken down into three categories, which you'll see below.
