Getting here will take you about a 4-5 hour drive from San Jose’s International Airport (or a 40-minute domestic flight) and the moment you arrive you will immediately feel the difference.
The culture is Rastafarian and reggae inspired with African Jamaican vibes making you feel the One Love.
Unlike the Pacific Coast, the surf season in Puerto Viejo, and in the Caribbean in general lasts from December to March.
When the swell hits, it hits big time, and the waves are huge and when that happens at the beach break (Playa Grande, Playa Cocles) there are nice inside small waves for beginners and intermediates, and also then the point break at Punta Uva (which is also right down the street from our retreat venue) we can surf the gentle point break (which is a right!) and has several breaks (on the inside) so all levels will have a great time.
Punta Uva is where we see lots of surf camps and beginners. All around, Puerto Viejo has become a full time surf town, with national surf competitions and amazing local surfers!
