STONE AND SKY
The rope had worn a groove into Maya's shoulder that she suspected would never heal. Not because the wound was deep, though it was, but because the body, she had come to understand, remembers what the mind tries to forget. Four years of the same rope, the same stone, the same path from the quarry to the base of the pyramid, and her left shoulder sat lower than her right now, a permanent genuflection to work that would never be finished. The pyramid grew. That much was certain. Each morning it stood a little taller against the sky, its limestone steps catching the first light of the sun before anything else in Uxmal did, before the ceiba trees, before the temple rooftops, before the faces of the other slaves.
The Leader said this was proof of the Sun God's favour.
The Sun God wanted to be close to his monument. He was reaching down to meet it.
Maya had stopped believing in the Sun God at roughly the same time she had stopped believing her mother would come back for her. Both abandonments had occurred in her eighth year. She was now, by her own calculation, somewhere in her twentieth, though the counting of years was not a practice encouraged amongst the slaves. Years implied a future.
The overseers preferred the slaves to inhabit only the present: the rope, the stone, the path.
She set her weight against the rope and pulled.
Beside her, a man named Itzam pulled too. He was perhaps fifty, though he looked older, with a back so curved from decades of labour that he walked at a permanent angle to the world, as though addressing it sideways. Itzam had been born in Uxmal, not taken from somewhere else as Maya had been taken from her village near the coast. He remembered the city before the pyramid, or claimed to.
Maya was never entirely certain how much of what Itzam said was memory and how much was the softening of old pain into story.
"The stone is heavier today," he said.
"The stone is the same stone it always is."
"No stone is the same two days in a row. Stone breathes. Stone changes." He paused, teeth clenched, as the rope bit. "You just have to pay attention."
Behind them, closer than Maya would have liked, the Slave Driver moved along the line of workers with the particular gait of a man who enjoyed his occupation. His name was Chaak, a cruelty of naming, because Chaak was also the rain god, the god of sustenance and storm, and there was nothing sustaining about the man who bore his name. He was tall for an Uxmal man, with the kind of stillness that predators have when they are not yet moving. The whip at his belt was braided from agave fibre, and it had left its signature on so many backs that Maya sometimes thought of it as a second kind of writing, a text composed across human skin. Chaak walked the line. He did not speak yet. He didn't need to. His presence was its own instruction.
Maya kept her eyes on the stone and pulled. The pyramid's name, in the formal language of the priests, was K'uk'ulkan Naah, the House of the Feathered Serpent, though no one who worked on it called it that. The slaves called it the Weight, the overseers called it the Project, the priests called it the Gift, and the Leader called it nothing at all in public because the Leader communicated almost exclusively through intermediaries.
He had not spoken directly to a slave in living memory. Perhaps ever.
Maya had seen him up close only once, two years prior, when a section of retaining wall had collapsed during a rainstorm and the ensuing chaos had brought everyone, slaves, guards, priests, even the Leader himself, to the site.
He had stood at the edge of the damage in a cloak the colour of dried blood, and he had looked at the collapsed stone with an expression that she had spent two years trying to name. It was not anger, exactly. It was not grief. It was something between them: the expression of a man who has been told something he already suspected and finds no comfort in having been right. The Leader's name was Ix Chel Balam. He was perhaps forty-five, with the deliberate posture of someone who has been told since childhood that bearing is power. His face, when she had seen it close, was the face of a man who did not sleep well. The skin beneath his eyes had the texture of old papyrus.
She had thought about his face more times than she was comfortable admitting. The path from the quarry to the pyramid base was three hundred and forty steps. Maya had counted them so many times that the number had lost meaning and become instead a kind of music, a rhythm beneath the rope-pulling, the breathing, and the occasional strike of Chaak's whip on someone else's back. Three hundred and forty steps. On a good day, with a dry path and the stone running smooth on its rollers, it took perhaps forty minutes. On a bad day, rain-slick path, broken roller, the stone finding some invisible resistance in the earth, it could take three hours. Today the path was dry but the third roller had developed a crack down its length that spread a little further each time the stone passed over it. Maya could see it from her position at the front of the rope. She had been calculating since the quarry how many more trips the roller had in it before it split entirely. Her estimate was one. Maybe two if the wood was better than it looked. She considered saying something. She considered it the way she considered most things, thoroughly, without urgency, turning the question over until she could see all of its surfaces. If she said nothing, the roller would break. There would be chaos. In the chaos, there might be opportunity. There might also be punishment, because the overseers would need somewhere to direct their frustration, and the slaves were always available. If she said something, Chaak would take the information and do something unpredictable with it. He might fix the roller. He might punish the slave responsible for roller maintenance, which was a young boy named Ak who had only been brought to the site three months ago and still cried at night when he thought no one could hear. Maya looked at the crack in the roller. She said nothing.
Three steps later, Itzam said, very quietly, "The third roller."
"I see it."
"Ak will be beaten."
"Ak may be beaten regardless."
Itzam was quiet for a moment, pulling. Then: "You are becoming harder."
"I am becoming accurate."
"Those are not always different things," he said. "But sometimes they are." The roller held for the full three hundred and forty steps.
Maya revised her estimate upward. Perhaps three more trips, if the wood was treated well tonight. She made a mental note to tell Ak, later, when the overseers were eating and the slaves had their brief, begrudged hour of rest. At the pyramid base, the stone was received by a different crew, the placement team, the men whose job it was to fit each block into the growing structure with the precision the priests demanded. Maya had sometimes wondered what it would be like to be on that crew, to see the thing she helped drag actually become part of something.
But the placement team was composed almost entirely of men from Uxmal's artisan class, not slaves. There was a hierarchy even in construction. The stones were touched, at their final resting place, only by people the Leader trusted.
She unhooked her rope from the drag harness and stood up straight, or as straight as her shoulder allowed. The pyramid rose above her, and she did what she always did at this moment: she looked up at it, all the way up, until the apex cut against the sky. There was something wrong with the apex. She had thought so for months. It was the angle. The pyramid's sides sloped at a gradient that the priests said was dictated by sacred geometry, by the calculations of the astronomer-priests who had spent years determining the precise dimensions that would most please the Sun God. And the gradient was indeed consistent, face to face, with a precision that made the builders' work remarkable. But the apex pointed not at the sun. She had watched, on the solstice, the priests making their measurements, and she had watched the shadow the apex cast at midday, and the shadow did not fall where she would have expected it to fall if the structure were oriented toward the sun. It fell slightly north. She had never spoken of this. The noticing of it had come to her the way that certain knowledge comes, not suddenly but gradually, the way the groove in her shoulder had come, through accumulated repetition until denial was no longer possible. The pyramid pointed north of the sun. She did not know what was north. She had never been permitted to travel far enough in any direction to know what anything was. The coast, where she had come from, was east. The jungle was everywhere. North was just north: a direction, a vector, a line drawn through the sky that terminated somewhere she could not see. The apex of the pyramid pointed there.
That evening, the ceremony. Every evening the ceremony, but on the seventh day of each twenty-day month it was larger: more fire, more priests, more drums. Tonight was the seventh day. Maya could tell by the way the overseers moved differently in the late afternoon, quicker, purposeful, with the slight nervousness of men who have a role in something they do not entirely control.
Even Chaak, whip at his hip, moved through the slave quarters with less deliberation than usual. He had his own preparations.
The slaves were permitted to watch the ceremony from a distance, not as audience, but as demonstration. Their watching was part of the ceremony's meaning. They were shown what they were not.
The fire, the feathers, the priests in their regalia of jade and quetzal plumes, the Leader at the top of the pyramid in his dried-blood cloak: all of it composed a picture of power, and the slaves were the frame. Without them, it would just be men in costume.
Maya sat cross-legged at the boundary line, a row of torches that the slaves were not to cross, not that any of them would, and watched. The drums began at sunset. She knew the drum rhythms well enough to follow them as patterns, even as they moved through her body in other ways, ways that were harder to name and that she was suspicious of, because she knew the rhythms were designed to move through bodies in exactly that way.
The priests understood the drum rhythms as technology. She had heard Itzam say this once, and it was one of the things he had said that she had never stopped thinking about. Tonight the fire at the pyramid's base was larger than usual, the wood stacked in a configuration she didn't recognise, a new shape, or perhaps a very old one.
The priests moved around it in patterns that she tracked with half her attention while the other half remained, as always, on the situation: exits, sightlines, the position of the guards.
Then the Leader descended. He came down the pyramid stairs with the slowness of ritual, each step placed with precision, the dried-blood cloak moving around him like something alive. His face was painted for the ceremony in the blue-black of hematite and something else, something that caught the firelight in a way that pigment normally didn't. His headdress was serpent and star, the two symbols that, she had noticed, always appeared together in the priestly iconography, never separately, as though whatever the serpent meant, it required the star to complete it. He reached the base and the drums stopped. In the silence, which was the most uncomfortable silence Maya had ever experienced, not empty but full, packed with expectation, the Leader raised both hands above his head and spoke a single word.
She did not know the word. It was not Yucatec, the language she had grown up with, nor the formal Mayan of the priests. It was older. She had heard it three times before at these ceremonies and each time it landed in her chest like a stone dropped from height, landing without quite breaking anything, just landing. The fire responded. That was the only word for it. The fire responded, the flames moving toward the Leader rather than away from him, in the way that fire does not move, and the colour changing at the apex of the flames from orange-yellow to something that her eye wanted to call blue but that was not precisely blue, not any blue she had a name for.
Around her, the other slaves made the sounds that they made at this point in the ceremony: a kind of collective exhale that was not quite reverence and not quite fear. Itzam, beside her, was silent. He was always silent at this moment. It was the silence of someone watching something they have seen before but have not explained.
"Itzam," she said, very quietly, under the drums that had now resumed.
"Mmm."
"How does he do that." A long pause. The fire still moved wrong.
"I used to think he was gifted by the gods," Itzam said. "Then I thought he had simply learned very well from the priests." Another pause. "Now I think neither of those things."
"What do you think now?"
He looked at her sidelong. His eyes in the firelight were the eyes of someone carrying knowledge he has decided is too heavy to put down but too dangerous to share. "I think," he said, "that certain things in this city are very, very old. Older than the people in it. And I think the Leader knows what those things are and we do not." He paused. "And I think that is exactly what someone wants." The drums built. The ceremony reached its culmination, tonight's sacrifice was a boar, not a person, the human sacrifice occurred only on the highest festivals, and the Leader performed the rite with the same expression he had worn at the collapsed wall: certain, sleepless, already knowing.
Maya watched the fire until it was permitted for the slaves to return to their sleeping quarters. She lied on her mat in the dark and listened to the sounds of the jungle beyond the city walls and thought about direction. About north. About a pyramid that pointed at something that was not the sun. She thought about it until, despite everything, she slept. She dreamed of her mother. This was not unusual. What was unusual was the quality of the dream: most of her mother-dreams were residue, fragments of sense-memory from her early childhood, the smell of woodsmoke and copal, the texture of a particular woven cloth, the specific pitch of her mother's voice calling her name across a distance. But tonight the dream had architecture.
Her mother sat across a fire from her and looked at her with an expression that Maya, in the dream, understood but could not have described to anyone outside of it. "The rope," her mother said, in Yucatec.
"I know."
"You've known for a long time." Her mother looked at the fire between them. In the dream the fire was the ordinary colour of fire.
Maya noticed this and thought: good. Even in sleep, apparently, she was making comparisons. "What is north?" Maya asked.
Her mother did not answer. But she looked up, away from the fire, above Maya's head, and her expression changed. Not to fear. To something that Maya in the dream recognised as the opposite of ignorance.
She woke before she could see what her mother was looking at.
The roller broke on the second trip. Maya had revised her estimate down again after watching Ak, who had spent the previous evening treating the wood with oil, and seeing how the oil had seeped into the crack rather than sealing it, suggesting the split went deeper than the surface. The wood was rotten at its core. When it went, it went completely: a sound like a bone breaking, and the stone lurched to the right, the drag ropes going suddenly slack, and three of the workers at the front of the line went down in a tangle. Maya stepped clear. She had been stepping clear of falling things her entire adult life and the reflex was now so refined as to be almost graceful.
Chaak was there before the dust settled.
The workers on the ground were untangling themselves, none appeared seriously hurt, and Ak was standing at the broken roller with the expression of a boy who knows exactly what is coming and has already decided how to endure it. He was perhaps fourteen. His eyes were very still.
Chaak looked at the roller. Looked at Ak. The calculation was visible on his face, not because Chaak was transparent but because he did not think it necessary to hide calculations from people he did not consider fully human. "You treated this last night," Chaak said. It was not a question.
"Yes, Overseer."
"With oil."
"Yes, Overseer."
Chaak crouched down and examined the broken roller. He ran one finger along the split, which now exposed the wood's pale interior, damp and fibrous. He pressed the interior. His finger went in further than it should have. He stood up. "The rot was already there," he said. "The oil went into the rot."
Ak's expression did not change. He was very good, Maya noticed, at maintaining the surface of his face while whatever was happening beneath it happened elsewhere. "Yes, Overseer," Ak said.
"Who told you to treat this roller?" A pause. Just long enough to be visible.
"No one, Overseer. I saw the crack myself."
Chaak looked at him for a long moment. Then he looked along the line of workers, slowly, as if reading a text. His eyes passed over Maya.
She met them and looked away, not quickly, but with the measured disinterest she had cultivated over years as the expression least likely to attract attention.
"Replace the roller," Chaak said. "We lose an hour." He walked away.
Ak let out a breath so small that only someone watching for it would have noticed.
Maya caught his eye as the workers began the process of manoeuvring the replacement roller into position, a laborious, collective effort that required everyone's attention, and she gave him the smallest possible nod.
He blinked. That was all. But it was enough.
Later, in the hour of rest, she would tell him what she should have told him the night before. The roller after this one also had a crack.
Itzam had known a man who escaped once. This was the story he told in fragments, over weeks of rest hours, never the whole of it at once, as though the whole of it was too heavy to carry in one piece.
The man's name had been something Itzam no longer said aloud, "it doesn't help him or me," he had explained, with characteristic pragmatism, and he had been a builder, a skilled one, the kind of slave who was given slightly more freedom of movement because the work required it. He had spent months studying the jungle's edge, the way it met the city's outer wall, the places where the wall was low or poorly watched. He had made his move during a ceremony, when the guards' attention was on the fire.
"Did he make it?" Maya had asked, the first time Itzam told this part.
"Into the jungle, yes. Immediately."
"And then?"
Itzam had been quiet for a while. "Three days later they brought him back. He was not injured, not in any way I could see. But he was different." He touched his own temple. "As though something had been removed."
"What did they do to him?"
"Nothing. That was the strange thing. Nothing was done. He was put back to work. He never tried to escape again. He never spoke much again, either." Itzam had looked at his hands. "Within a year he was dead. Not from anything the overseers did. From nothing I could name. He just diminished."
Maya had thought about this story for a long time.
The man had been broken, she understood that. But the question of how, what exactly had been done to him in three days in the jungle before he was retrieved, was the question she kept returning to. Not as deterrence. As information. If you knew how something broke you, you could perhaps find its limit.
She had been learning the jungle's edge for two years. Not in the way Itzam's man had learned it, not as an escape route, not yet, or not exactly, but as a student. The jungle abutted the city's western wall, and the western wall was the oldest part of the city, built before the pyramid, before the current regime, when Uxmal had been a different kind of place. The wall was limestone, as everything in Uxmal was limestone, but this section was rougher, less dressed, the blocks not fitted with the precision that the newer construction demanded. There were gaps. Not large enough for a person, not easily, but large enough for light and air and sound to pass through. She had discovered, through the accumulation of small observations, that the western wall was also the least watched. Not because the overseers were negligent, Chaak was many things but negligent was not among them, but because the jungle itself seemed to discourage approach. This was difficult to articulate even to herself, because it was not a rational observation, or not entirely: there was simply something about the western wall, at dusk especially, that made people find reasons to be elsewhere. The guards rotated away from that post more quickly than others. Animals that moved freely in other parts of the city's perimeter did not approach the western wall. The jungle beyond it sounded different, too. This was the observation she trusted least, and therefore the one she returned to most. She had spent enough time in proximity to that stretch of wall to know that the sounds from its far side were not precisely wrong, birds still called, insects still maintained their textile of noise, but the patterns were different. The rhythm was different. As though the jungle on the far side of the western wall were listening to something she could not hear, and organising itself around that listening. She had not told Itzam this. She had told no one.
Ak found her on the third evening after the roller incident. He was trying to seem casual, which at fourteen with something urgent to communicate was not entirely within his range, but she gave him credit for the attempt.
"You wanted to speak to me," she said, before he could arrange himself into whatever approach he had planned.
He abandoned the arrangement. "The priest's assistant. Muluc. He spoke to me today."
Muluc was a young man in the priestly hierarchy, perhaps seventeen, who occupied the ambiguous space between priest and not-quite-priest that seemed to be a stage of the priestly education. He was clever in a way that made people uneasy, with a habit of framing statements as questions and questions as statements, so that you could never be entirely certain what he had actually said to you. Maya was interested in him, and wary of the interest.
"What did he say?"
"He asked me about the rollers." Ak paused. "About the specific roller. The rotten one."
"What about it?"
"He wanted to know if anyone had noticed it before it broke. Whether any of the workers had seen it and said nothing." Ak looked at his feet, then back at her. "I said I didn't know."
"Did he believe you?"
"I don't think he cared whether he believed me. I think he already knew what had happened. He was just confirming it."
"For whom?"
Ak shook his head. He didn't know, or didn't want to say.
She thanked him and let him go. She sat for the remainder of the rest hour watching the western wall and thinking about what it meant that a priest's assistant was interested in who amongst the slaves was paying attention to things. Two possibilities.
He was reporting this to Chaak, in which case she needed to be more careful. Or he was not reporting it to Chaak, in which case she needed to understand why.
She was forty-three days, by her private count, from making her move. The rollers, the wall, the ceremony schedule, she had been building the picture for two years and it was almost complete. She looked at the western wall and the western wall gave her nothing back, which was its own kind of information.
Itzam had been brought to the pyramid project at age nineteen, taken, or purchased, the distinction existed technically if not practically, from a family of weavers who lived in the city's artisan quarter. Before the current Leader, he had explained once, the artisan class and the slave class had been different things. Not radically different, the social distance between a weaver's son and a quarry worker had never been large, but different in the ways that mattered: freedom of movement, right to worship at the public temples, the ability to negotiate the terms of one's labour.
"What changed?" Maya had asked.
"The pyramid," Itzam said. It was always, ultimately, the pyramid. The pyramid's construction had required more labour than Uxmal could supply from its existing slave population, and the Leader's solution, not the current Leader but his predecessor, now a decade dead, had been what the priests called a reorganisation of social categories. Which was to say: the categories had been reorganised so that more people fell into the one that the pyramid needed.
Weavers, potters, small-scale farmers, people who had owned their own tools and their own time, they had been designated, through a series of priestly decrees, as k'atun workers, which technically meant something like those who labour toward the sacred, but which in practice meant slaves. Itzam had been nineteen and had protested the designation. He showed Maya, once, the scar on his shoulder where the protest had been addressed.
"But you never tried to escape," she said.
"I had a wife. Children." He said this without self-pity, as a statement of physical fact, the way you might say I had two arms and they were both needed. "And then I didn't have them anymore. And by then I was this." He touched his curved back.
"What happened to your family?"
He was quiet for a long time. Around them the other slaves were eating the evening ration, dried maize and something the cooks called beans but that tasted more like the memory of beans, and the sounds of the eating filled the silence until he chose to break it. "My wife died in the twelfth year. My children were reassigned. The two older ones to weaving, which was some comfort. The youngest was selected." Selected. The word had a specific meaning in Uxmal that everyone knew and no one used its explicit synonym for, because to use it was to make it too real to survive.
"I'm sorry," Maya said.
"He was seven." Itzam put down his bowl of bean-memory. "The Leader said the Sun God was honoured. The priests said the harvest would be good." He picked the bowl back up. "The harvest was, in fact, very good that year. I have spent a great deal of time thinking about whether that means anything." He said this with absolute steadiness, the way he said most things. It was the steadiness that she trusted. It was different from the steadiness of men who had not felt anything, which was a brittle steadiness, prone to sudden fracture. Itzam's steadiness was the kind that came from feeling things completely and surviving them, which was another kind of knowledge entirely.
"It doesn't mean anything," Maya said.
"No," he agreed. "It doesn't. Which is the problem."
She found the mushrooms on a morning when the sky had the colour it sometimes had before a storm that did not arrive, a colour without a clean name in Yucatec, yellowish and close. She was not supposed to know the names of the days, the Mayan calendar was priestly knowledge, held by the astronomer-priests who maintained the cycles of the tzolk'in and the haab and the Long Count, and slaves were not taught to read the calendar. But she had learned enough from fragments, from watching the priestly schedules and the ceremony patterns and the way the city's rhythm changed at certain intervals, to construct a rough parallel calendar of her own. Her calendar had no names for the days. She used numbers. It was day two hundred and ninety-one of her private count. The mushrooms were at the base of a ceiba tree that stood inside the city's perimeter, near the western wall, which perhaps explained why no one had harvested them. Mushrooms of this kind were well known in Uxmal; they were not, under ordinary circumstances, secret knowledge.
The astronomer-priests used them in certain ceremonies.
The Leader used them, it was said, in his private devotions.
The ordinary population was not forbidden from using them, exactly, but it was understood, through the kind of social pressure that does not require explicit prohibition, that mushrooms were priestly medicine, and that the boundary between priestly medicine and general use was a line that careful people did not cross. The mushrooms grew in a cluster of eleven.
She counted them twice. She knew their properties in the way that she knew most things: through observation and deduction, cross-referenced against fragments of knowledge gathered from various people over years.
The priests called them k'abal, which meant something like the opening or the unfolding. They caused visions. The visions were described in priestly texts, she had not read those texts but had had them described to her by someone who had, which was the closest thing to reading she had ever achieved, as encounters with the divine structure of the world, with the patterns that underlay reality.
She crouched at the base of the ceiba tree and looked at the cluster of mushrooms for a long time. The ceiba's root buttresses rose around her like the walls of a small room, and she was aware, as she always was near this tree, of the quality of the ground beneath it: the soil was darker here, denser, as though the tree were drawing something up from a depth the other soil did not reach. She was not interested in the divine structure of the world, or not in the way the priests meant it. She was interested in what the mushrooms actually did to a person's perception, because she had formed a hypothesis over the preceding months, arising from the observation about the pyramid's alignment, from Itzam's comment about certain things being very old, from the strangeness of the western wall, from the fire's wrong colour, that something was being hidden, and that what was being hidden might be visible under conditions that ordinary consciousness did not provide. The evidence pointed here. She took seven of the eleven mushrooms and left four. The four she left in a different configuration than the seven had been, so that any subsequent observer would see a smaller, differently arranged cluster and might assume they were a second growth. She concealed the mushrooms in the wrap of fabric she used to pad the rope harness over her shoulder, the groove, the wound that would not heal, and carried them back through the rest of the workday.
Muluc spoke to her that afternoon. He appeared at her elbow during the second transport of the day with the approach of someone who had spent time thinking about how to approach her, which is to say: he appeared to be happening past her by accident. He was carrying a clay tablet and a reed stylus, the equipment of the scribal class, which gave him the visible marker of a person with a legitimate reason to be anywhere. "The left roller on the second transport carriage," he said, without looking at her, as though commenting on the angle of the sun.
She said nothing.
"It has a hairline fracture at the point where the axle pin enters. Not the same kind of crack as the previous one. This one runs laterally rather than longitudinally. It will hold through today but probably not through tomorrow's first transport."
She considered whether to acknowledge this. She decided that not acknowledging it would be more conspicuous than acknowledging it. "Why are you telling me?" she said.
He wrote something on his tablet. Or appeared to write something. "Because you are the person on this site who notices things," he said. "And I am curious about what you do with what you notice."
"I drag stones," she said.
"Mmm." He wrote something else. "And in your other hours?"
She looked at him directly for the first time. He was cleverer than he looked, which was already clever. His eyes were the eyes of someone who is playing a game and knows it and is not certain whether his opponent also knows it, which was itself part of the game.
"I eat," she said. "I sleep."
"You watch the ceremonies."
"We're all required to watch the ceremonies."
"You watch them differently," he said. "Most people look at the fire, the priests, the Leader. You look at the structure of the ceremony. The geometry of it. The timing." A pause. "You watch the way the Leader faces north-northwest for twenty-two seconds at the beginning of each ceremony, before he faces east toward the sun."
She kept her face still. North-northwest. She had not had a word for the precise direction before. North was as far as her understanding had taken it. But north-northwest was a refinement, a degree of precision that suggested someone else had also measured it, had measured it carefully enough to produce a number. Twenty-two seconds. She had not counted the seconds. She had not thought to. "You know the direction precisely," she said.
"I have instruments," he said, with the briefest flicker of something that might, in different circumstances, have been amusement. "It is my profession to know directions precisely." He closed his tablet. "The roller. Tomorrow morning." He walked away.
She stood with the rope in her hands and the mushrooms against her shoulder and thought: north-northwest, and twenty-two seconds, and what is he.
She went to Itzam that night and told him most of it. Not the mushrooms, the mushrooms she kept, because some information shared too widely becomes a decision made by the group rather than by you, and she was not ready for that yet. But the roller, and Muluc, and the direction.
Itzam listened with the particular quality of attention that he gave to things he already knew parts of. She had learned to read this quality: the slight stillness of his body, the way his breathing slowed.
"North-northwest," he repeated, when she had finished.
"Does that mean something to you?"
He was quiet for a long moment. Outside, the jungle was doing what the jungle always did at night: filling the dark with its layered, constant notation. Insects, frogs, the occasional scream of something being caught. The jungle at night was relentless. It never stopped. She had grown up near the coast, where nights had a different quality, the sea's sound was rhythmic, had intervals, breathed, and the jungle's constancy still, after years, unnerved her in a way she found difficult to reason with. "My father knew a story," Itzam said at last. "His father told it to him. You understand, this is old, many generations old. Not history. Story."
"Tell me."
"Before Uxmal. Before the pyramid, before the ceremony, before the Sun God as we understand him, there was something in the jungle to the north-northwest. My father called it the place where the sky sat down." He paused. "I always thought it was a metaphor. A religious image. The sky sitting down to earth as a way of describing divinity making contact." He paused again. "But my father described it once in a way that wasn't metaphorical. He said there was a mark in the earth. A circle. And that the jungle did not grow inside the circle, and had not grown inside it for as long as anyone could remember. And that the priests of the old religion, the religion before the Sun God, had built their most sacred site there."
"What religion before the Sun God?"
Itzam looked at her. "That is the part I don't know. My father said only that it was older. That the Sun God religion came after, and replaced it, and that the replacement was, his word was sudden. He said: it happened too quickly for a religion to change that way on its own."
Maya felt something that she recognised as the particular cold that does not come from temperature. "Someone changed it for them."
"My father didn't say that. I am saying it, now, to you, for the first time." He looked at his hands. "My father said: something came and something changed. That was as far as he went."
"And the circle in the jungle. North-northwest of Uxmal."
"If the story is true. I have no way to know if the story is true."
"How far north-northwest?"
He shook his head. "He never said."
She wondered for a while.
Around them the other slaves slept, or lied in the specific stillness of people pretending to sleep, which was its own kind of information about how much of this conversation had been heard.
She did not worry greatly about this.
The people in this room were not informers, or the ones who were had already informed on whatever they were going to inform on. The social dynamics of the slave quarters were, in their way, as precisely understood by Maya as the dynamics of the pyramid construction site.
"The pyramid points there," she said.
"Yes."
"The Leader faces that direction at the beginning of each ceremony."
"Yes."
"And the fire changes colour."
"The fire changes colour," Itzam agreed.
She reached a decision. Not the large decision, that was still forty-one days away by her count, and some of those forty-one days were now in question, given the roller situation and Muluc's interference with her plans, but a smaller decision, a stepping stone toward the large one.
"I'm going," she said.
He did not ask where. He already knew. "When?"
"Not yet. I have things to do first." She thought of the mushrooms against her shoulder. "I need to understand what I'm going toward before I go toward it."
"Understanding and going are sometimes incompatible goals," he said.
"Sometimes. Not always." She met his eyes. "The circle in the jungle. The place where the sky sat down. If I find it "
"If you find it," he said, "you will know something that the Leader knows. That the priests know. That has been known for generations and has been kept from people like us."
"Yes."
"And then?"
She thought about the groove in her shoulder. About the fire's wrong colour. About Itzam's son who had been seven years old. "And then I'll know whether to be afraid of it," she said. "Or whether someone else should be."
She consumed the mushrooms three days later, on a night when the ceremony was small, a minor observance, little fire, few priests, the Leader not present. She went to the ceiba tree where she had found them and sat at its base and ate them one by one, which was not the priestly method, the priests prepared them as a tea, diluted, measured, but she did not have access to priestly preparation, and the raw mushrooms were what she had. They tasted of earth and something underneath earth, something that had been in the ground a long time. She sat with her back against the ceiba's vast root buttress, the tree that held the world, whose roots went down to Xibalba and whose branches held up the sky, and waited. For a while nothing happened. She was aware of the normal textures of the night: the jungle's sound, the distant drums of the minor ceremony, the smell of copal smoke drifting from the temple complex. She was aware of the mushrooms sitting in her stomach with a weight that was slightly different from the weight of food. She breathed. Then the night changed. It changed not the way a room changes when a lamp is lit, suddenly, completely, but the way water changes when it begins to warm: from within, the change already present before it became visible. The jungle's sound was the same sound but she could hear further into it, further than was physically possible, which she noted even as it happened with the part of her mind that was committed to noting things regardless of circumstance. She could hear the individual voices within the texture, each insect a distinct source, each frog a specific location, the breathing of animals she could not name occupying specific geometries in the dark. The ceiba tree against her back was warm. This was not a metaphor. The bark was warm, with the warmth of a living body, not of wood that had absorbed the day's heat. She pressed her palm against it and the warmth moved toward her hand, or she imagined it did, or the distinction between moving and imagining was not, in this moment, as robust as she normally required it to be. The jungle opened. This was the phrase that arrived in her mind, unbidden: the jungle opened. As though it had been closed before, or partly closed, and was now permitting her a larger view. She could see, not with her eyes, which were working normally, but with something that functioned parallel to her eyes, the structure of the place she was in. Not the leaves and roots and bark, which she could already see. The underlying structure. The way things were connected to each other. The roots of the ceiba reaching down and connecting to the roots of other trees, which connected to others, which connected to others, in a network that extended in all directions, including north-northwest. There was something north-northwest that the network knew about. She did not go toward it in her body. Her body stayed where it was, back against the warm bark, hands in her lap. But there was a motion, a kind of attention-in-motion, that followed the root-network north-northwest through the earth, through the dark, through the jungle's vast and patient density. The jungle thought. It thought slowly, in the way that trees grow slowly, but it thought, and what it was thinking about was a great deal older than the Mayan civilisation that had planted its cities within it. She followed the root-network north-northwest. Distance became strange. She was aware that she was covering, in this internal motion, a span of ground that would take many hours to walk, but the motion itself had no duration she could measure. She moved through the root-network the way that sound moves through water, faster than expected, arriving before the logic of arrival should have permitted. And then she was there. The circle in the jungle.
Itzam's story had prepared her for the absence of growth, and it was true: within a circle of perhaps fifty paces in diameter, nothing grew. The jungle stopped at the circle's edge with a precision that no natural boundary produces, a line, not a gradient, the trees and undergrowth ending as though something had been drawn between this space and the world around it. Within the circle, the earth was bare and the colour of old ash. At the circle's centre, barely visible beneath a layer of the same ashen earth, a shape. Not a building. Not a statue. Not anything she had a category for. It was flat, and large, and made of a material that was not stone and not wood and not clay and not any worked substance she knew. It was the colour of the sky at the moment between night and the first intimation of dawn: not black, not grey, not blue, but the colour that exists for a few minutes each morning before colour itself arrives, the colour of potential before it becomes specific. It was not new. It had been there a long time. The earth had grown over it and receded from it and grown over it again, many times, over a period that her sense of its age, coming to her through the root-network, was not a human age. It was not a generational age. It was an age that made the pyramid, still under construction, seem like something she had made this morning.
She tried to understand what it was. The mushrooms gave her images rather than words, which was their nature. The images were: a long distance, a movement through the dark between things, an arrival. The images were: a process of arrangement. Not construction, the way the pyramid was construction. Not building. Arrangement. As though things that existed had been sorted into a different order, a more useful order, by something with a very clear idea of what useful meant.
The images were, finally: a signal. Something that had been transmitting since before the city, before the people, into the earth and the root-network and eventually into the ceremonies and the calendar and the turning of the Long Count. Something that had been teaching. The cold returned. Deeper this time.
She withdrew from the circle the way she had approached it, following the root-network back south-southeast toward the ceiba tree and her own body. The withdrawal was faster than the approach. The network seemed to understand that she had what she had come for and it let her go with a speed that felt, in its own strange way, like urgency. She came back to her body and found it exactly as she had left it, back against the warm bark, hands in her lap, except that the night had moved on considerably, the minor ceremony's drums long silent, the temple fires reduced to their embers. The mushrooms' effects were fading. The jungle's sound was retreating toward its normal register, still present but no longer detailed. She sat for a long time after, in the ordinary dark, and thought about what teaching meant. Who had been taught. What had been learned. And whether the thing that was teaching had built the pyramid.
She found him two days later, or he found her, the distinction, with Muluc, was never quite clear, because he had a way of being in locations where the person he wanted to speak to also happened to be, and whether this was craft or coincidence she had not yet determined.
He was at the western wall.
She had gone there in the early evening, the hour before the rest period when the overseers were eating and the guards were at their laziest, because she had decided, in the clear, flat way that decisions sometimes arrive after the specific intensity of the mushroom experience, that she needed to examine the wall more carefully. Not with the intent of crossing it. Not yet. But with the intent of understanding why it was different from the other walls.
Muluc was sitting on a block of limestone near the wall's base, writing on his tablet. He looked up when she arrived. "You went somewhere," he said.
She stopped at a respectful distance. "I work here."
"Three nights ago. You went somewhere in your mind, or close to it. Your body was here but your attention was extended." He looked at her with those too-clever eyes. "I was watching. I watch the workers sometimes, at night. Looking for dreaming patterns."
"Is that a priestly practice?"
"It's my practice." He set down the tablet. "I am not quite a priest. I am not quite not-a-priest. It's a useful position." A brief pause. "You found something."
She said nothing.
"I'm not reporting to Chaak," he said. "I haven't reported to Chaak in two years. I report to the senior astronomer-priest, Ek Balam, who is not Chaak's ally and has not been for some time." He paused again. "The political situation among the priests is complex. You probably don't care about it."
"Tell me about the wall," she said.
He looked at it. The wall: old limestone, rough-fitted, the gaps between blocks large enough for fingers. "What do you want to know about it?"
"Why does nothing approach it."
He was quiet for a moment that felt considered. "You've noticed that."
"Two years ago."
"It's the frequency," he said. "The same frequency that the Leader uses in his ceremonies. The north-northwest frequency." He said this as though frequency were a normal word for a thing everyone understood, and she wondered if, in his priestly education, it was. "There is a source north-northwest of the city. The frequency it emits travels through the earth. The western wall sits directly in its path."
She was very still.
"The Leader doesn't generate the frequency," Muluc continued, in the tone of someone reciting facts they have known long enough to no longer find remarkable. "He amplifies it. The ceremony is an amplification. The pyramid is an amplification. Every stone you have dragged up that path has been placed in a configuration designed to focus and redirect something that was already here before any of us."
"Before any of us," she repeated. "How long before?"
He looked at his tablet. On it, she could see, though she could not read the glyphs, a diagram: a circle, and radiating from it, lines.
"Ek Balam says the Long Count does not go back far enough to record the source," he said. "He says this in private. In public, he says the source is the Sun God, who has always existed." A pause. "He does not believe that."
"And you?"
"I believe," he said, with the careful precision of someone who has thought about this for a long time, "that the Sun God is a story built around something that is not a god. Something that has been here much longer than the story. And I believe the story was built deliberately, and that whoever built it knew exactly what they were doing and why."
The serpent and the star, she thought. Always together. Never separately. The serpent that moved through the earth, the root-network, the frequency. And the star. "The headdress," she said. "The Leader's headdress."
Muluc looked at her for a moment with an expression that was not quite surprise but was in that direction. "You noticed that too."
"Serpent and star. Always together."
"The old priesthood, before the Sun God religion, used a different symbol," he said. "Just the star. No serpent. The serpent was added when the religion changed." He paused. "When the religion was changed."
"To represent what?"
"The earth connection," he said. "The frequency moving through the ground. The star for what was above. The serpent for how it reached down." He closed his tablet. "Together they mean: something from above, which is now below, which is now in everything."
She thought of the root-network. Of the ceiba tree's warmth. Of the teaching she had felt at the circle's centre. "Who changed the religion?" she said.
He looked at her for a long moment. The evening light was fading, the jungle beyond the wall beginning its first notations of the night, and in his face she saw something that she recognised, not from anyone she knew, but from the deep memory of her own long nights of thinking: the expression of a person who has arrived at a conclusion they would prefer not to have arrived at. "That," he said, "is what Ek Balam has spent forty years trying to determine. And I think you have been somewhere in the last three days that might help him answer it."
She said nothing for a long time. A bird called once from the jungle's side of the wall, a single note, and was not answered. "Your senior priest," she said at last. "Does he want to preserve what the Leader does? Or does he want to understand it?"
"He wants to understand it," Muluc said. "He has come to believe that preservation and understanding are, in this case, not the same project."
"And you?"
The expression on his face shifted again, into something younger than his usual precision allowed. "I want to know if it can be stopped," he said.
She told Itzam about Muluc that night, all of it this time, including the mushrooms and the circle and the thing she had felt at its centre. She told him in the way she did most things: without preamble, without the softening that some people applied to difficult information as though the difficulty were in the words rather than in what the words described. She watched his face as she spoke and his face did what it always did, which was to receive the information without performance, fitting it into whatever structure he maintained internally for things he did not yet fully understand.
When she finished he was quiet for a long time. "Teaching," he said at last.
"That was the word that arrived."
"And the pyramid amplifies it."
"That is what Muluc says. And it fits what I saw." She paused. "The pyramid is not a monument. It is an instrument."
Itzam turned this over.
She could see him turning it over, the way the stone turned on its rollers, moving through the same arc it had always moved through but arriving somewhere new.
"An instrument for what?" he said.
"I don't know yet. Amplifying the signal. Spreading it further. Reaching more people." She thought of the ceremony, the drums, the fire's wrong colour. "Teaching more people. Faster."
"Teaching them what?"
She did not answer immediately, because this was the question she had been turning over since she returned from the ceiba tree, the question that sat at the centre of everything else and did not resolve cleanly into language. "I think," she said slowly, "that what it teaches is not a set of facts. It is more like a way of being organised. A way of structuring a society. The ceremonies, the calendar, the hierarchy, the pyramid itself: not things that were invented here, not things that grew out of this place and these people, but things that were installed. Like a crop planted in soil that was prepared for it."
Itzam was looking at his hands again. It was what he did when a thought arrived that was too large for his face to contain. "The harvest was very good," he said.
It took her a moment to understand what he meant. Then it arrived, and the cold with it. The sacrifice. The harvest following the sacrifice.
Year after year, the priests calibrating the relationship between what was given and what was returned, and the returns being, as far as anyone could measure, consistent. Not miraculous but consistent, in the way that a well-designed system is consistent, in the way that cause and effect are consistent when someone who understands the mechanism is managing both.
"The Sun God is fed," she said. "And the Sun God provides."
"As it has always been."
"As it was arranged to always be."
Itzam set his hands flat on his knees with the deliberateness of someone choosing not to let them shake. "My son," he said. "He was not given to a god." He nodded once, very slowly, like a man confirming a route on a map he has already committed to memory. "When do you go?" he said.
"Eight days." She had revised the count twice since her conversation with Muluc. "There is a ceremony in eight days, the large one, the first of the new month. Chaak will be occupied. The western wall guard rotates at the midpoint of the ceremony, and there is a gap of perhaps four minutes between the retiring guard and the arriving one. I have watched this gap for six months. It is consistent.
"And if it is not consistent on that night?"
"Then I wait for the following ceremony, which is twenty days later." She paused. "But I would prefer not to wait twenty days. Muluc knows too much about what I've been doing, and I don't yet know enough about what Muluc wants."
"You trust him?"
She considered this with the care it deserved. "I trust that he wants something that requires my being free to act. I don't yet know what that something is. And I am aware that those two facts are not the same as trustworthiness."
Itzam almost smiled. It was a thing his face did rarely and briefly, like a bird landing and immediately departing. "What do you want me to do?" he said.
"Nothing that risks you. If I don't return, I don't return. You've survived the absence of people before."
He looked at her with the expression of a man who recognises a kindness that is also an insult and decides to accept it as the kindness. "I'll watch the wall," he said. "From a distance. In case something goes wrong that I can address from this side."
"There is very little you could address from this side."
"Probably not," he agreed. "But I'll watch anyway."
She accepted this without further argument, because she understood that he was not offering surveillance. He was offering witness, which was a different and more serious thing.
The eight days passed in the way that days pass when you are paying attention to them: slowly and in detail. Each morning the rope, the stone, the path. Each evening the rest hour and the sounds of the jungle and the western wall giving nothing back. She was more careful than she had ever been, in the days of preparation, about the quality of her ordinary behaviour, the degree to which she presented as a person whose interior matched her exterior. She had always been good at this, good enough that Chaak's attentions had fallen on others far more often than on her, but the proximity of the departure made her aware of every small inconsistency, every moment when her attention wandered toward the wall or the night sky or the apex of the pyramid and its persistent wrong direction. She spoke to Muluc once more, briefly, at the western wall in the early evening.
"You're going soon," he said, without preamble.
"You watch carefully."
"It's my practice." He had his tablet, always his tablet, the clay surface covered in glyphs that she could not read but that she had begun to understand were not all astronomical. Some of them were what she would have called, if she had the vocabulary, observational notes: records of behaviour, of timing, of the small patterns that other people did not notice and Muluc collected the way other people collected nothing, because most people did not understand that attention, sustained and precise, was a form of power available to anyone willing to pay the cost of it. "When you reach the circle," he said, "the source will know you have been there before. It knows who has made contact. I don't know how it knows. Ek Balam believes it maintains a kind of record."
"A record of what?"
"Of who has been in proximity to it. Of who has the capacity to perceive it clearly." He paused. "Not everyone can. Most people who consume the k'abal in that location experience only visions. Symbols. Imagery that the priests then interpret as divine messages, which is not wrong exactly, but is not quite right either. It is like describing a language as music because you can hear that it has rhythm but cannot understand the words." He looked at her directly. "You understood the words."
"I understood something."
"Ek Balam has consumed the k'abal at that location four times," Muluc said. "He experienced the visions. The symbols. The sense of great age and intention. But he did not experience teaching. He did not experience arrangement." A pause. "He is a brilliant man. He has spent forty years on this question. But there is something in the way he approaches it, the way a priest approaches it, looking for the divine because he has been trained to look for the divine, that prevents him from seeing what is actually there."
She thought about this. "And you think I saw what is actually there because I wasn't looking for the divine."
"I think you saw it because you were looking for the mechanism," he said. "Which is what it is." The evening deepened. From somewhere in the temple complex, a single drum began the preliminary pattern for a small devotional, and the sound travelled across the city in the way that drum sounds travelled, not as noise but as instruction, the body responding before the mind decided whether to.
"What do you want from me?" she said. "When I come back."
He was quiet for a moment, and in the quiet she saw, for the first time, a crack in his precision, something beneath the clever eyes that was not clever, that was simply afraid.
"I want you to tell me if it can be turned off," he said.
She left on the eighth day as planned. The ceremony had been building since late afternoon, the priests processing from the temple complex to the pyramid base in their full regalia, the jade catching the torchlight in the specific way that jade does, not reflecting it but holding it, as though the stone were generating light rather than receiving it. The drums were the large ones tonight, the ceremonial drums that the priests brought out only on the first of the month, their resonance so low that it was less a sound than a shift in air pressure, something the chest registered before the ears did. Maya had positioned herself at the edge of the watching slaves, near the boundary torches, and she observed the ceremony with the precise divided attention she had been practicing for months: enough engagement to appear present, enough detachment to be tracking everything else.
The guard at the western wall post was a man she knew by face but not by name, a conscript rather than a career overseer, young enough to still be uncomfortable in his role. He stood at the post with the slightly rigid bearing of someone who was not yet certain how much attention the work actually required.
She had watched him for six months.
He was regular. At the midpoint of the ceremony, when the Leader reached the pyramid's summit and the first of the fire-rituals began and the drums reached their peak volume, this guard turned, always, to watch. He turned for between three and five minutes. He could not help it. Everyone turned.
The Leader appeared at the pyramid's summit. The drums reached their peak.
The guard turned.
Maya moved. She had prepared the crossing point over the course of weeks, very gradually, in sessions brief enough that no single observation of the wall could have registered as preparation. Three specific blocks near the wall's base where the mortar between them had crumbled enough to create footholds. A gap near the top, partially obscured by the growth of a vine on the outer face, wide enough for a person to pass through if the person was willing to accept some cost. She had estimated the cost at a torn shoulder and possibly a bruised hip. She had decided this was acceptable. The shoulder that took the rope. She went up the wall in four movements, using the footholds she had identified, and through the gap at the top in a single motion that was not graceful but was fast, and the cost was as estimated: the torn shoulder, sharp and immediate, the bruised hip, duller and subsequent. She landed on the jungle side of the wall in a controlled fall, absorbing it through her legs, and straightened up and was still. The jungle was immediately different. She had expected it to be different in the way she had observed from the other side of the wall, the rhythmic difference, the sense of organised listening. But standing in it was different from observing it through a gap. Standing in it, she understood that the difference was not atmospheric. It was structural. The jungle on this side of the wall was arranged differently, or perhaps she was now capable of perceiving the arrangement that had always been there, the root-network that she had followed in her mushroom-vision now perceptible, faintly, as a kind of directional pressure, a suggestion of north-northwest that was not audible or visible but that her body registered in the way the body registers the slight downward slope of ground beneath feet, an orientation, an invitation. She heard the drums shift behind her, the ceremony continuing, and she moved into the jungle and did not look back. The first hour was navigation and nothing else. The jungle at night was not impenetrable, but it demanded attention: the roots, the uneven ground, the places where the canopy closed and the darkness became near-total, forcing her to move by feel and by the pressure of the root-network's suggestion. She had brought what she could carry without appearing to have prepared for departure, which was very little: a length of cord, a small blade she had made from obsidian chips over six weeks of patient work in the rest hours, a portion of dried maize wrapped in cloth. The cord and the blade she had worn beneath her working garment for the past three days, adding them gradually to her person in the way that she had added everything gradually, so that any single observation would register as nothing unusual. The jungle accepted her without ceremony. This was the word that arrived: accepted. Not welcomed, not indifferently ignored. Accepted, in the specific sense of a thing being received into a system that has been waiting for it, the way water is accepted by dry earth: not with enthusiasm, but with a completeness that suggests the receiving was always part of the structure. She moved north-northwest.
By dawn she had put enough distance between herself and Uxmal that the drums were inaudible. She stopped at a stream she had not known was there but had felt through the root-network's pressure, a shift in the direction of the suggestion, and drank and washed the torn shoulder, which had bled more than she had estimated but not dangerously. She wrapped it with a strip torn from the hem of her garment, tying the ends with her teeth, and sat for a moment at the stream's edge and took stock. She was perhaps two hours' walk north-northwest of Uxmal. The circle, by her estimation from the mushroom-vision, was perhaps six hours further in the same direction. She had enough maize for two days if she rationed carefully, and the stream meant water was available, and the jungle meant food was available if she was patient and had the knowledge to identify it, which she had developed over the years of watching what birds and animals ate in the section of jungle visible from the city's western perimeter. She was not afraid. She examined this and found it to be accurate: not the performed calm of someone suppressing fear, but a genuine absence of it, which she attributed to the fact that she had been rehearsing this in her mind for two years. Fear, she had found, was largely the property of the unexamined situation. The examined situation produced other things: concern, calculation, the specific alertness that is not fear but is sometimes mistaken for it.
A spider monkey observed her from a branch overhead with the frank curiosity that monkeys have, which she had always found more honest than the way most people looked at each other. It made a sound, low and enquiring, and she made the same sound back to it, not as mimicry but because it seemed like the correct response, and the monkey considered this and moved away along its branch with the self-possession of someone who has received sufficient information and has other appointments.
She continued north-northwest. The jungle changed as she moved through it, or her perception of the jungle changed, or both of those things were the same thing. The root-network pressure became stronger, more directional, less a suggestion and more a current. She had the sensation, increasingly, of walking downstream, of being carried rather than travelling, and she monitored this sensation with the part of her mind that was always monitoring, because being carried was not always a neutral condition. It depended on where the current was going and whether the destination was one you would have chosen. She was going to the circle. She had chosen to go to the circle. The fact that the jungle was also conducting her there was information, not reassurance.
She found food twice before midday: a stand of breadnut trees whose fallen fruit she gathered into the cloth with the remaining maize, and a slow-moving stretch of water where three fish lay in the shadow of an overhang with the utter confidence of fish that had never been fished. She killed one with the obsidian blade, quickly and with the minimum of disturbance to the water, and ate it raw because a fire would have cost more time and caution than the cooked nutrition was worth. The jungle watched this with the quality of attention she had felt through the root-network, the organised listening, the sense that nothing here was simply background, that everything occupied its position in a structure more intentional than the word wild normally implied. She thought about the word wild. In Yucatec, the word for the jungle was k'aax, which meant something between wild and sacred, a compound meaning that acknowledged the jungle as a space outside human order without implying that it was therefore disordered. It had its own order. The Mayan conception of the world had always understood this, had built the ceiba tree's cosmology around it, the roots going down and the branches going up and the world's structure extending in both directions from the human middle. But she was now thinking about who had built that conception, and whether it had been built for the same reason that the ceremony had been built, the calendar, the hierarchy. Whether the idea of the jungle as sacred had been installed the same way the rest of it had been installed. And if so, to what end. The question turned in her mind as she walked, not anxiously but with the patience she gave all questions that were too large for the time available to them. The jungle continued to conduct her. The light moved through the canopy in the way that light moves through dense growth, not in straight lines but in the diffuse, variable illumination that makes time of day difficult to determine and direction a matter of feel rather than observation. She was navigating almost entirely by the root-network pressure now, the feel of north-northwest in the soles of her feet, and she trusted this more than she was entirely comfortable with, which meant she was paying attention to it. At some point in the afternoon she became aware that she was being followed. Not by a person. The movement in the undergrowth to her left was too fluid, too close to the ground.
A cat of some kind, she thought, though she could not see it clearly, only the occasional displacement of a leaf or the slight settling of undergrowth that indicated weight moving through it. It had been there for perhaps half an hour before she registered it, and the fact that it had been there for half an hour without announcing itself meant it was not hunting her. A cat hunting moved differently. This movement was parallel. Alongside.
She kept walking.
The cat, or whatever it was, kept pace.
After a while she spoke to it, in Yucatec, not because she expected a response but because speaking aloud helped her think and the cat seemed as good an audience as any. "The source is old," she said, peering at the undergrowth. "Older than the Long Count. Older than the people. It transmits something through the earth and the roots and the ceremonies. The Leader focuses it, amplifies it, directs it toward the population." She paused, stepping over a root. "And the population is taught. Is shaped. Is organised in a particular way, the way that is most useful to something that wants a large, well-organised, obedient society." She paused again. "And I do not yet know what that something wants the society for." The undergrowth moved, saying nothing. "The harvest," she said. "The sacrifices. The growth of the pyramid. The precision of the calendar. All of it functional. All of it pointing north-northwest." She thought of Itzam's father's story. The place where the sky sat down. "Something came down," she said. "A long time ago. Something from elsewhere. And it sat down and it began to arrange." She stopped walking. The undergrowth stopped moving. She stood in the diffuse afternoon light of the jungle and felt the root-network current running north-northwest through the soles of her feet and thought: and it is still arranging. It has not finished. The pyramid is not complete. And when it is complete, the amplification will reach, what, further? More people? All the people? She thought of the man Itzam had known who had tried to escape and been returned from the jungle changed, with something removed. She thought of the three days between his escape and his return. She thought of the jungle conducting her, right now, toward the circle, and asked herself whether the direction was entirely her own. She stood still for a long time. Then she said, aloud, to the root-network and the cat and the organised listening of the jungle: "I am choosing to go north-northwest. Not because you are taking me there. Because I have decided to go there." She waited to see if the pressure changed.
It did not change. It was not the kind of thing that responded to declarations. It simply was, the way gravity simply is, available to anything that moves within it, indifferent to whether that movement is chosen or compelled.
She filed this information carefully and walked on.
The circle announced itself before she could see it. The announcement was not visual. It was a change in the root-network pressure: from the current, the downstream feeling, to something more like arriving at the source of a river. The current became still. The pressure became presence.
She stopped walking and stood at what she estimated was twenty paces from the circle's edge and let her perception adjust, the way eyes adjust to a change in light: not an active process, but a patient one. The jungle fell silent. Not the false silence of something nearby that has caused other things to stop. A genuine silence, total and without the quality of held breath, not a pause but a different state, a region in which the jungle's constant notation simply did not apply. She walked the final twenty paces.
The circle was exactly as she had seen it in the mushroom-vision. The bare earth the colour of old ash, the precision of the boundary where the jungle stopped, the flat shape at the centre half-buried in the ashen soil. But standing in it physically was different from perceiving it through the root-network.
Standing in it, she felt the absence of the root-network more than she had felt its presence: here, inside the circle, the network simply stopped. As though the circle were a gap in the earth's nervous system, a space where the signal that ran through everything else did not run. Or did not need to.
Because here was the source.
She walked to the centre and crouched beside the flat object and looked at it in full daylight, which the circle's bare canopy permitted in a way the rest of the jungle did not. In daylight it was more itself.
The material was smooth in the way that water is smooth, not a surface property but a fundamental quality, as though roughness were simply not part of what it was composed of. Its colour shifted as she moved around it: the pre-dawn non-colour from certain angles, from others something closer to the particular dark of the space between stars, which she had no name for but had observed on the clearest nights, lying on her back in the slave quarters' small courtyard, looking up through the gap in the roof.
She put her hand on it.
The teaching began immediately, and this time it was not mediated by mushrooms or root-networks or the interpretive softening of sleep. It was direct. It was the difference between watching a fire from across a courtyard and standing in it, and she understood immediately why the priests experienced only visions and symbols when they came here, because the information was of a kind that a mind organised by the Sun God's religion, by the hierarchy, by the installed categories of sacred and profane, would receive as visions and symbols. It was only available as information if you were looking for information rather than for divinity.
What she received was this: A distance. Not a metaphor. An actual distance, incomprehensible in its magnitude, between the place where the object had originated and the place where it now rested. A journey of a duration that made the Long Count's thirteen b'ak'tuns seem like an afternoon. And at the end of the journey, an arrival: this jungle, this peninsula, this particular configuration of soil and water and life that had made the object's work possible. The work. The work was what she had partially understood through the root-network and now understood more completely: a process of organisation. Not the organisation of a society for that society's benefit. The organisation of a society for a purpose that the society was not informed of, in the same way that a field of maize is not informed of the harvest. The signal that ran through the root-network, the frequency that the ceremonies amplified and the pyramid focused and the calendar regulated, was a signal designed to promote specific social developments: hierarchy, precision, large-scale cooperative labour, surplus production, astronomical knowledge, and the particular quality of organised belief that transforms individual human energy into collective human energy and directs it at a single point. The pyramid.
She held her hand on the object and felt the teaching continue and made herself stay with it, made herself receive the rest of it, the part that the mushroom-vision had not reached. The pyramid, when completed, would do something. The precise nature of the something was not available to her in language, because there was no language she knew that contained the concepts required. But the functional shape of it was clear enough: the completed pyramid, at a specific astronomical alignment, on a specific date in the Long Count, would act as a transmitter. Not of the teaching signal. Of something else. A return signal. A message back along the incomprehensible distance, saying: ready. Ready for what.
She pressed her hand harder against the smooth surface and asked this, not in words but in the quality of attention that the object seemed to respond to, and what she received was not a word and not an image but a feeling, and the feeling was the feeling of harvest. She removed her hand. She stood up and looked at the object for a long time and the object was still and smooth and the colour of the space between stars, and the circle was silent, and the jungle at the circle's edge was still.
The cat, she noticed, had not followed her into the circle. It sat at the boundary, just outside the line where the jungle stopped, and watched her with the yellow patience of a thing that has no concept of what it has brought to the edge of this place but that has, apparently, brought it here with intent.
She looked at the cat and the cat looked at her and the jungle held its different silence and she understood that she needed to go back to Uxmal. Not because the root-network was telling her to. Because Muluc had asked a question, and she now had the beginning of an answer, and the beginning of an answer about whether something could be stopped was not the same as the answer, and the full answer required things that were in Uxmal and not in this circle in the jungle. She turned south-southeast and walked.
She had been gone four days when she crossed back over the western wall. The return was harder than the departure, not because of the wall itself but because of the shoulder, which had stiffened over the days of walking and made the climb painful in a way the adrenaline of departure had not permitted. She went over the gap slowly, favouring the right side, and landed on the city side with less control than she would have preferred, and had to spend a moment in the shadow of the wall simply breathing before she could move. The city was in its late evening routine. The ceremony for the first of the month had come and gone in her absence. The drums of the nightly small devotional were audible from the temple complex. The slave quarters were occupied, the overseers doing their rounds.
Itzam was at the western wall when she arrived. He had clearly been there a while. He was sitting against the wall's base in the posture of someone who has been waiting long enough that waiting has stopped feeling like a state and has become simply the condition of existence. He looked at her with the specific expression of a person who has already decided what to feel when the person they have been waiting for arrives, and now has to adjust that preparation to the actual person who has in fact arrived, who does not look quite like the person he was waiting for, or not entirely. "You're hurt," he said.
"The shoulder. It's fine." She sat down beside him. "How long have you been here?"
"This evening only. I've come each evening." He paused. "Ak covered for you. He's inventive, that boy. He told the morning count that you were ill, the afternoon count that you were worse, the second day that you'd been taken to the healers. After that Muluc interceded somehow and the counts stopped asking."
"Muluc interceded."
"He told the overseer's clerk that you were being assessed for reassignment to the scribal support work. I don't know how he has the authority to say that. Perhaps he doesn't, and was simply confident enough that no one checked." Itzam paused. "He's been watching the wall each evening too. From further away."
She absorbed this. The landscape of obligation was shifting under her, as it did when other people began to act on your behalf without being asked, and she was aware that she was now indebted in ways she had not chosen and could not yet fully assess.
"I found it," she said.
"I know."
"How do you know?"
"Because you came back," he said, "and you look like someone who found what they were looking for and it was worse than they expected."
She told him what she had learned from the object. All of it. The distance, the journey, the organisation of the society, the pyramid as transmitter, the date on the Long Count, the feeling of harvest. She told it in the same flat, careful way she told everything, not because the flatness was a choice but because the flatness was what the information required: given too much emphasis, it would sound like the narrative of a visionary, a prophet, a person whose evidence was experience rather than observation. She did not want to be that. She needed Itzam, and subsequently Muluc, to receive this as information rather than as revelation.
Itzam received it as information. This was why she had told him first.
"How long until the pyramid is complete?" he said.
"At the current rate, three years. Perhaps four." She paused. "But the Long Count date is specific. If the pyramid is not complete by that date, the signal cannot be sent. The astronomical alignment requires the specific geometry of the completed structure."
"And if the pyramid is not complete."
"I believe the signal is not sent." She met his eyes. "I believe nothing arrives."
He was quiet for a long time. The nightly devotional drums continued from the temple complex, and a child somewhere in the slave quarters was crying with the particular persistence of a child too tired to stop, the jungle beyond the wall made its notations, the city was exactly itself, as it always was, the same city it had been this morning and all the mornings before, except that she was now sitting inside it with the knowledge of what it was for, the world was exactly the same size it had always been and also incomprehensibly larger, and these two facts coexisted without resolution. "To stop the pyramid," Itzam said.
"We would need to stop the pyramid."
"Which means stopping the Leader."
"Which means replacing him with someone who will stop it. Or destroying it, though I don't know how you destroy a structure that size without the labour of the people who built it." She paused. "Which means the slaves."
"The slaves will not stop building the pyramid," he said. "They build because they are compelled to. Remove the compulsion and they will stop. But the compulsion is Chaak and the guards and the overseers, and behind them the priests, and behind the priests the Leader. That is not a small thing to remove."
"No," she agreed. "It isn't." She had found the k'abal on her way back. Not at the ceiba tree but deeper in the jungle, a second cluster at the base of a different tree, larger than the first, twenty or more caps in the humid shadow of the root buttress. She had taken all of them and wrapped them in the cloth with the remaining breadnut and carried them back over the wall against her injured shoulder. She did not tell Itzam about the mushrooms yet. Not because she didn't trust him. Because the thought she was forming was not yet complete, and half-formed thoughts, shared, have a tendency to be completed by the person you share them with rather than by you, and she needed this one to be hers.
She found Muluc the next morning, before the first transport, in the brief window between the dawn count and the beginning of work when the overseers were occupied with the day's assignments and the slaves had seven minutes of unstructured time that most of them spent eating or sleeping upright against the quarry wall. "I found it," she said.
"I know," he said, which was the same thing Itzam had said, and she filed the parallel away without expression.
"I touched it." This, unlike the return itself, produced a visible response.
His eyes changed in a way that she had not seen them change before: not the clever calculation, not the careful management of information. Something rawer. "What did you receive?"
She told him, as she had told Itzam, in the same flat register.
He listened with his tablet closed, the stylus still in his hand, and she watched his face process the information in real time: the pyramid as transmitter, the date on the Long Count, the harvest feeling.
When she finished he was quiet for a moment.
"The Long Count date," he said. "Ek Balam has a date. He has worked on it for twenty years. He told me once, in a moment of what I think was involuntary honesty, that there is a specific alignment he has been building the astronomical calculations toward, a date at which the pyramid's geometry, if completed, would create a resonance with the source object that would be, he said, unprecedented." Muluc paused. "He said the word unprecedented with a tone that I have never been able to fully interpret. Not excitement. Not fear. Something between them that has no clean name."
"Twenty-two seconds," she said.
He looked at her.
"The Leader faces north-northwest for twenty-two seconds at the beginning of each ceremony. Not longer. Not shorter." She paused. "Why twenty-two seconds?"
He was still for a moment, the stylus turning once in his fingers. "I have measured it many times," he said, "and assumed it was ritual precision. The way all ritual lengths are precise."
"What if it is the duration of something?" she said. "A response. Something that is sent back by the source, lasting exactly twenty-two seconds, in response to the ceremony's signal." The stylus stopped turning.
"A confirmation," he said.
"A status report," she said. "The ceremony sends: progress. The source responds: received, for twenty-two seconds. And the Leader faces north-northwest for exactly those twenty-two seconds because he is receiving something."
Muluc looked at the pyramid.
She had seen many people look at the pyramid, had looked at it herself more times than she could number, and she knew the range of ways a person could look at a thing they had looked at many times and find it changed.
His face in this moment had the particular quality of a man who has understood something he cannot ununderstand, and who is deciding, in real time, what that means for everything he has built his life around. "The Leader doesn't know," he said. "Or not fully. He performs the ceremony because he was taught to perform it, because his predecessor was taught, going back to the change in religion that my father's father's teachers might have remembered. He receives the twenty-two-second response and interprets it as divine favour, as the Sun God's acknowledgment, because that is the framework the religion provides." He paused. "He is as much a mechanism as the pyramid."
"As much as any of us," she said. The morning work bell sounded from the overseer's post.
Around them the brief window of unstructured time closed, the slaves moved toward the beginning of the day with the practised resignation of people who have made this movement so many times that it has become part of the body rather than a choice of the will.
She picked up her rope and thought about what she had carried back from the jungle, wrapped in cloth against her shoulder, and what she intended to do with it.
She prepared it over three nights, working in the darkest part of the slave quarters after the last overseer's round, with water heated on the small cooking fire that the slaves were permitted for an hour each evening and that she extended, through the manipulation of the fire's structure and the judicious placement of larger pieces of wood, for another forty minutes beyond the permitted hour. The preparation was not the priestly method, which she did not fully know, but it was informed by what she did know: the mushrooms needed heat sufficient to extract the active compound without destroying it, which meant water that steamed but did not fully boil, and a duration of between thirty and forty minutes, and the result would be a tea darker than cacao and with an odour that she needed to conceal. The concealment was the hardest part. The slaves' living space had the olfactory density of any space occupied by many people with limited access to washing, and the mushroom tea's smell, which was deep and vegetal and slightly wrong in the way that the fire's colour was slightly wrong, an odour that registered in the body before the mind categorised it, was distinctive enough that she could not simply produce it openly. She solved this by adding copal resin to the fire during the brewing, which was a permitted practice on ceremonial nights and which produced enough aromatic smoke to mask the tea's odour to anyone not directly over the pot. She was directly over the pot. She breathed through her mouth.
Itzam knew what she was doing. He said nothing and positioned himself between her and the sleeping quarters' entrance each of the three evenings, the curved angle of his back a kind of accidental concealment, a man simply resting near a fire.
Ak also knew, she thought, or knew enough. He was a perceptive boy. He had positioned himself on the other side, and on the second evening had coughed, twice, with a particular timing that had caused her to move the pot off the direct heat exactly before the overseer's second round came through. She had looked at him afterward and he had been asleep, or appeared to be.
On the morning of the seventh day of the new month, she went to Muluc. "Tonight," she said.
He looked at her for a moment, then nodded once.
"Ek Balam?" she said.
"He knows something is being planned," Muluc said. "He doesn't know what. I have not told him." A pause. "He would try to redirect it. He has spent forty years understanding the source and he is not finished understanding it and he does not want anything to change until he is finished." He paused again. "He will never be finished. That is not a criticism. It is just what happens when a man makes understanding his purpose rather than his means."
"Will he interfere?"
"I will keep him occupied tonight. There is a set of astronomical measurements he has been asking me to take for three months. Tonight I will take them, with his direct supervision, which will require his presence at the observatory from two hours before sunset until well past the ceremony's beginning." He met her eyes. "Whatever happens, he will not be at the ceremony."
"And after?"
"After is after," he said. "I've thought about it and decided that thinking about it further is not useful. The after will be what it is."
She respected this. It was, she thought, the closest Muluc had come in their acquaintance to honesty without strategy.
"One more thing," he said. He reached into the fold of his robe and produced a small clay vessel, sealed with wax. "Ek Balam's preparation. The priestly method. He brewed it six months ago for a ceremony that was subsequently cancelled." He held it out. "It is stronger than whatever you have made. More precise." He paused. "I took it from his stores this morning. He has many such vessels. He will not notice this one's absence for some time."
She looked at the vessel in his hand for a moment. "Why are you helping me?" she said.
The clever eyes, for once, gave her a direct answer. "Because I have studied the source for three years and I understand what it is and what it is building toward, and I cannot stop it from where I stand. I am a priest's assistant and a careful observer and a good astronomer and none of those things is sufficient." He paused. "You are something I don't have a category for. Which means you might be."
She took the vessel.
The ceremony of the seventh day was the largest of the month. She had known this for four years and had watched it from outside the boundary torches and had understood it as spectacle and technology and manipulation. Tonight she watched it from inside the crowd, having moved, during the confusion of the procession's organisation, from the slaves' watching area to the back of the villager section, the ordinary people of Uxmal who were not slaves but not priests, who attended the ceremony as participants rather than observers and whose participation was, she understood now, itself part of the mechanism: the collective attention, the drum rhythms moving through shared bodies, the fire and the copal and the Leader's word amplifying the source signal outward through the gathered crowd and then beyond. She had the clay vessels in the inner wrap of her garment. Her own preparation and Ek Balam's, separated, identifiable by weight and texture.
The crowd was dense. The seventh-day ceremony drew everyone who was not performing the ceremony: villagers, artisans, minor functionaries, the families of overseers, even some of the guards from the less critical posts. The slave contingent was at the back, behind the boundary torches, watching as always from outside. She was at the boundary's edge, in the compressed space where the slave crowd met the villager crowd, and no one was looking at her because everyone was looking at the pyramid, at the fire, at the descending figure of the Leader in his dried-blood cloak.
She unsealed Ek Balam's vessel first. She added it to the communal water vessel that was passed through the crowd before the ceremony's beginning, the water blessed by a minor priest at sundown and distributed to the gathering as part of the opening ritual. She had watched this for four years and understood its timing exactly: the vessel moved from the front of the crowd toward the back, reaching the slave contingent in the final minutes before the ceremony's formal beginning, when everyone was holding their portion and waiting for the Leader's descent before drinking. She passed through the crowd as the vessel passed, moving with it rather than toward it, appearing to be carried by the density of people rather than navigating deliberately, and at three separate points she added a measure of the tea: once at the front of the villager section, once at the middle, once at the junction with the slave area. Then she stopped moving and stood and breathed and waited.
The Leader reached the pyramid's base. The drums stopped. The silence. He raised his hands and spoke the word, the old word that was not Yucatec and not formal Mayan, and the fire responded and the crowd drank, as they always drank, the blessed water, the opening of the ceremony, and she stood in the middle of all of it and felt the root-network under her feet and thought of harvest and of the twenty-two seconds and of a signal sent across a distance that made the Long Count seem like an afternoon, and then the ceremony continued and for a while nothing was different.
Then the man to her left looked at his hands. It was a small thing: a man looking at his hands. People look at their hands. But the quality of his attention was different from ordinary attention, the way the fire's colour was different from ordinary colour: not wrong, precisely, but operating in a register that ordinary experience did not provide. He looked at his hands as though he had never seen them before and was finding them, in this first seeing, more interesting than he had expected.
Around her, gradually and then all at once, the crowd changed.
Not dramatically. Not the way that stories about such things tend to describe change: screaming, falling, dramatic transformation. It was quieter and stranger than that. People stopped making the sounds they normally made at ceremonies and began making different sounds, smaller sounds, the sounds of people who are paying attention to something no one else can see. The drums, which had resumed their ceremonial pattern, began to interact with the crowd's new quality of attention in a way they had not interacted before, the rhythms penetrating rather than washing over, each beat arriving with a precision that the bodies in the crowd received individually rather than collectively.
The Leader was at the summit of the pyramid, performing the fire ritual. He had not drunk the water. Of course he had not. The water was for the crowd. The Leader had his own preparations, his own pre-ceremony rituals, his own substances from his own priestly stores.
She had known this and had planned for it, and had decided that it did not matter, that the Leader was a mechanism and the crowd was the point, and that a mechanism without a population to operate on was a different kind of problem than a mechanism with one. She moved toward the pyramid.
The stairs were guarded, as they were always guarded, by two men at the base and one at each of the three intermediate platforms. But the guards were part of the crowd and the crowd had changed, and the guards' change was more visible than the civilians' change because the guards were trying to maintain a posture that their bodies were no longer entirely cooperating with. The man at the base left his post looked at the sky with the expression of someone who has just heard something at the edge of audibility and cannot determine the direction.
She walked past him and onto the first stair. The pyramid was steep in the way that all Mayan pyramids were steep, the stairs angled for ascent rather than for the comfort of the ascending person, each step rising to mid-thigh. She had looked at these stairs for four years and now she was on them and they were what she had expected: hard work, physically demanding, the injured shoulder protesting on the side where she needed to brace. She went up steadily, not quickly, conserving what she had for the top.
The guard at the first platform had sat down. He was looking at his hands, the same gesture as the man in the crowd.
She passed him and went up to the second platform.
The guard at the second platform was upright but his eyes were following something she could not see, a movement in the air above the crowd, and his hand was nowhere near his weapon.
She went past him.
The third platform's guard was the youngest of them, barely Ak's age, and he was crying silently in the way that young people cry when something has reached past their defences before they had a chance to construct a defence, and she stopped for a moment beside him and said, in Yucatec: "It will pass," which was not certain but was the most honest useful thing she could offer, and went up the final flight of stairs.
The Leader was at the summit. He was standing at the altar, the fire burning before him in the stone basin, and he was facing north-northwest in the twenty-two-second posture, hands raised, receiving the source's confirmation signal. He was in the full ceremony, entirely occupied with the ritual, and he had not yet registered anything unusual from the crowd below because the crowd below from this height would look, she imagined, much as it always did: a gathered mass of people, their individual changes invisible at this distance.
She walked to the altar and stopped ten paces from him.
He lowered his hands and turned. The expression on his face was the expression she had seen twice before: the collapsed wall, the aftermath of the sacrifice. The expression of a man confronting a thing he has already suspected. But there was more in it this time, a layer she had not seen in the earlier occasions, something that she took a moment to identify because she had not expected it. He was relieved. It was unmistakable once she had seen it: the loosening around the eyes, the slight drop of the shoulders, the quality that a body has when a weight it has been carrying for a long time is finally, after all, about to be put down. "I knew someone would come," he said. Not in Yucatec. In the old language, the language of the word he spoke at ceremonies, and she did not know this language, could not have translated a sentence of it, but she understood this sentence the way she had understood the teaching from the object: not through the words but through what the words were doing.
"I don't speak that language," she said, in Yucatec.
He shifted without apparent effort. "No." In Yucatec, accented with the formal dialect of the priestly class. "Of course not." He looked at her for a long moment. Up close, in the firelight, he was older than he appeared from a distance, or perhaps simply more tired. The skin beneath his eyes. The papyrus quality. "You touched it," he said.
"Yes."
"And you understand what it is."
"I understand what it is doing."
"That is more than I have ever understood," he said, with a simplicity that was not humble performance but factual admission. "I have performed the ceremony for twenty years. My father performed it for thirty. His father before him. None of us has understood. We have only continued."
"Why?"
"Because the alternative was to stop," he said. "And stopping meant disorder. Disorder meant suffering. The society functions because the ceremony functions. The ceremony functions because I perform it." He paused. "Whatever it is that I perform it for, the practical consequence of performing it is a city that works.
