"I am R. Karpagakani and my native place is Sathur in Viruthunagar District. After 8th [grade], I discontinued my studies due to my family difficulties. I did petty jobs and earned money, though I liked to study further. My father died when I was 22 years old and I lost hope in my life. But then a woman called Muthu consoled me and guided me to go to Gandhigram. She assured me that I would get a bright future. I came to Gandhigram Sevikashram on June 1, 2004. Rajam Akka, the Headmistress then permitted me to stay.
Doing errand jobs here, I wanted to continue my study. All the teachers of Sevikashram encouraged me and I joined 9th [grade] I did hard work - studying as well as working in the hostel as a care taker. Now I have a list of degrees B.A, M.A, D.T.Ed and CAC. I will remember the help I got from Sevikashram throughtout my life. I am proud to say that I am working as a teacher in the same school where I studied – Sevikashram. I am very grateful to all the teachers and the Secretary who have brought light into my life." ~ Courtesy of Gandhigram Trust
