Place

• Place is described as "a particular area or point on Earth that has a particular characteristic." (3)

• The Hopeton Earthworks is an example of a geographic place which is characterized by a 20 acre square and 20 acre circle with two smaller circles which join the square and parallel walls which extend towards the river. (4)

Significance:

• The Hopeton Earthworks were culturally and ceremonially significant to the Hopewell people. The geometric earthwork was created to be a ceremonial gathering site rather than a permanent place of residence as seen by the artifacts excavated from around the earthworks. (5)

• The Hopewell people placed a significant meaning to the earthworks during its construction as they geometrically planned the construction of the parallel walls to align with the sunset on the winter solstice and chose different colored soils for different parts of the walls. (6)
