OVERVIEW
Honest Speed does not require an account, and we do not sell personal information. The app shows your speed from the phone's GPS, can show it as a mirrored HUD, can alert you above a speed you set, and records trips you start. Your trips and settings are stored locally on your device. It also uses Google services for analytics, crash reporting, remote configuration, and advertising.
LOCATION
The app asks for location permission ("while using the app") so it can show your speed; on Android it requests precise location. Location is read about once per second only while the app is in the foreground and either the Speed screen is open or a trip is running. The app does not use background location: when you leave the app, a running trip is paused and the time away is recorded as a gap. Speed readings are used on the device to display your speed and to check your speed alert. Positions are saved only while a trip is recording (see below). Your coordinates are not sent to the developer and are not included in analytics events. If you decline, the app explains how to allow location, and you can still view saved trips and settings.
INFORMATION STORED ON YOUR DEVICE
- Trips: up to 300 finished trips. Each trip keeps its start and end time, summary statistics (distance, moving time, confirmed top speed, average moving speed, number of segments and GPS gaps, gap time, and counts of used and rejected GPS fixes) and up to 20,000 track points. Each track point has a time, latitude and longitude, reported accuracy, speed, a moving/stopped flag and a segment number.
- Running trip: while a trip is running or paused, a checkpoint of it (the same kind of data) is saved when it starts, about every 10 seconds, and when the app goes to the background, so a trip can be recovered if the app is closed unexpectedly.
- Deleted trips: a list of the identifiers and deletion times of up to 1,000 recently deleted trips is kept so a deleted trip is not restored by accident. It contains no positions.
- Settings: speed unit, display style, GPS filter, keep-screen-on, speed alert (on/off, limit, vibration), and whether you dismissed the safety note.
- If the trip list is found to be damaged, a copy of it is kept on the device so it is not silently lost.
The app may also store basic operating information such as the times of recent full-screen ads (to space them out), app-use count, whether the review prompt was shown, and cached advertising or More Apps configuration.
The developer does not run a server that receives your trips or location. The app reads developer-controlled advertising settings and a More Apps list from Google Cloud Firestore, but it does not upload your trips, coordinates, or speeds. Icons in the More Apps list are loaded from the addresses in that list.
TRIP EXPORT
When you tap Export GPX or Export CSV on a trip, the app writes that trip to a file in the app's temporary (cache) folder and opens your phone's share sheet. GPX files contain the track points (latitude, longitude, time); CSV files also contain accuracy, speed, moving flag and segment. The file goes only where you choose to send it, and it is not encrypted, so share it only with apps and people you trust.
ANALYTICS, CRASH REPORTING, AND ADS
Google Firebase Analytics may process limited app-usage and technical information, such as app version, device type, and app-instance identifiers. The app records these events: app launch, start screen view, splash ad shown, tracking prompt result (the status), app session (the running count of sessions), review prompt shown / accepted, review from menu, menu open, privacy policy open, More Apps open, tab opened (which tab), display style chosen, trip started, trip recovered, trip ended, trip exported (GPX or CSV), speed alert triggered, and ad revenue (ad format, value, currency, precision). The trip-ended event includes the trip distance rounded to 0.1 km and the number of GPS gaps. Events do not include coordinates, routes, times of trips, or speeds.
Google Firebase Crashlytics may process crash reports and related technical information needed to diagnose app problems.
The app shows banner ads, full-screen ads (app-open and interstitial), and on Android an ad in the exit dialog, through Google AdMob. No other ad mediation network is configured. Google may process advertising identifiers and device, app, consent, network, and ad-performance information to provide and measure ads, and may use an IP address to estimate an approximate location. This is separate from the location permission described above; the app does not pass your position to the ad service.
Banner ads appear only on the Trips and Settings tabs, never on the Speed screen. No full-screen ad is shown while a trip is running or paused, while the HUD view is on, or before your saved trips have loaded. While the app stays open, for 10 minutes after you end a trip the only full-screen ad that may appear is one interstitial after you close the trip summary; if the app is closed and restarted, this 10-minute period does not carry over. At other times an app-open ad may appear when you start or return to the app. On Android, pressing Back to leave the app opens an exit dialog that may contain an ad.
PERMISSIONS AND ADVERTISING CHOICES
Feature permissions: location (while using the app) and, on Android, vibration for the speed alert. The app does not request background location, notifications, camera, microphone, contacts, photos, Bluetooth, or health data.
Where required (for example in the EEA and UK), Google's consent message (UMP) is shown first, and personalized advertising stays off unless your choice allows it. On iOS, the App Tracking Transparency prompt is shown only after that step and only when personalized advertising is allowed. If tracking is not allowed, the IDFA is not available to the app or its ad partners. If the consent message cannot be loaded, the app requests only non-personalized ads and does not show the tracking prompt. The app works whatever you choose.
You can change location and tracking permissions in your device Settings at any time. Where Google requires it, the app menu shows "Privacy choices", which reopens the consent message so you can change your advertising choice. The menu also links to this policy.
STORAGE AND YOUR CONTROL
You can delete any trip from its detail screen (open it from the Trips tab and tap Delete trip; Undo is offered for a few seconds). Ending a trip removes its running checkpoint. You can also clear the app's data on Android or delete the app. Exported files you shared are outside the app and are not removed by these controls. Local data may be included in an Apple, Google, or device backup depending on your backup settings; uninstalling normally removes the active copy but may not remove an older backup.
Because we do not receive your trips or location, we cannot delete them for you; the controls above remove them from your device. For questions about data processed by Google, or to ask us for help with a privacy request, contact us at the address below.
Data processed by Google is retained according to its service settings and policies:
- Google Privacy Policy: https://policies.google.com/privacy
- Firebase privacy information: https://firebase.google.com/support/privacy
- Google advertising technologies: https://policies.google.com/technologies/ads
We use these services under their applicable terms, and we ensure that third-party service providers with whom we share user data provide the same or equal protection of that data as stated in this policy.
SECURITY
Your saved data is kept in the app's private storage on your device, which the operating system protects from other apps; it is not separately encrypted by the app, so protect your device with a passcode. Apart from the limited analytics events described above, the app does not upload your saved data. Communication between the app and Google services uses encrypted connections (HTTPS/TLS). No method of storage or transmission is completely secure, but we limit what the app collects to what is described in this policy.
IMPORTANT NOTICE
Speed and distance are estimates from GPS and can be wrong or delayed, for example in tunnels, between tall buildings, or with a weak signal. Do not rely on the app for speed limit compliance, legal evidence, or enforcement purposes; follow your vehicle's speedometer and road signs. Do not operate the phone while driving: mount it before you set off or let a passenger use it, and follow local laws on phone use and windshield displays.
CHILDREN
The app is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children.
CHANGES
We may update this policy if the app or its services change. The date above shows the latest revision.
