Jonas Vingegaard won his first Tour de France in 2022 on his second time participating in the tour. He spent the majority of the race trading leads back and forth with fan-favorite, Tadej Podacar. Vangegaard pushed through stage 19 and crossed the finish line 2 minutes and 43-second ahead of Podaar. After a total of 79 hours, 33 minutes, and 20 seconds on the bike, Jonas Vangegaard became the first Danish Tour de France champion since 1996

The 2019 Tour de France winner, Egan Bernal of Colombia, averaged 25.2 mph. He is the first Latin American to ever win the Tour de France. At age 22, he is also the youngest Tour de France winner in modern racing history. He finished the 2,091.4 mile race in exactly 82 hours and 57 minutes.

The majority of riders can average a speed of about 15 mph on a one hour ride. A good speed for a beginner is 10 mph, but you should be able to get to 15 mph pretty quickly. If you start training every once in a while, you could get your average up to 18 mph, but training on a regular basis could get you to 22 mph. Professional riders can easily average 25 mph during races like the Tour De France.

I grew up riding my bike in Kentucky, which means that I had plenty of hills to ride up and down. I remember the thrill of hitting 40 mph for the first time when I was about 10 years old, but I also remember dreading going up that hill at 3 mph.

The difference between a rusty old bike and a brand new carbon fiber superbike with all the bells and whistles is night and day, but there are some more subtle factors that can make a difference in between.

For reference, a mountain bike can be closer to 30 lbs with nothing on it. Ducati Panigale V4 draws power from its 1103 cc, V4, Desmosedici Stradale engine that grunts a sizable 211 bhp of power at 13000 rpm and 124 Nm of apex torque at 10000 rpm. The need for speed of bike fanatics is met by the 998cc, liquid-cooled, V4 DOHC, 16-valve engine that powers the Ducati Superleggera V4. It can generate a maximum of 234 HP and 119 Nm of torque with a full race exhaust system, enabling it to travel at speeds of more than 300 km/h. The Superleggera V4 is also the street-legal motorbike with the highest power-to-weight ratio, according to Ducati, with an outstanding power-to-weight ratio of 1.30 hp/kg. The fastest street-legal motorbike in the world, this bike is regarded as the pinnacle of racing bikes. Ducati Superleggera V4 is priced at Rs. 1,12,00,000.

With an aggressive design, Kawasaki Ninja ZX-10R is a complete monster on the road and a favourite amongst bike fanatics. A race-ready motorcycle with four in-line cylinders and a liquid-cooled engine, the bike delivers a staggering power of 200bhp and 114.9Nm of torque. The six-speed gearbox enables high-speed performance without any lags. The bike weighs a mere 207 kg, making its construction lightweight and smooth for riding. The bike is priced at Rs. 16,30,976.

A 999cc, 4-cylinder, DOHC engine with liquid cooling is featured on the Honda CBR1000RR-R SP to provide peak performance. It has a maximum power of 214.5 HP at 14,500 rpm and a maximum torque of 113 Nm at 12,500 rpm. This bike has an air intake system that maximizes effectiveness, allowing it to produce the most amount of peak power. It also has an exceptional power-to-weight ratio, which enables it to accelerate quickly and attain a controlled top speed of 299 km/h. The Honda CBR1000RR-R SP is recognised as one of the best bikes in the world in the litre-class supersport division. The bike is priced at Rs. 23,63,000.

The flagship superbike from the Japanese bike magnate is endowed with a sleek design and compact fairing. The 7th generation CBR 1000RR is equipped with characteristics like a nine-level adjustable traction system, slipper clutch, quick shifter, TFT LCD monitor, titanium muffler tuned for sound and others. Lighter than its predecessor the most advanced CBR is fitted with a 999 cc, liquid-cooled in-line 4-cylinder mill that produces a maximum power of 186.3 bhp at 13000 rpm and peak torque of 114 Nm at 11000 rpm. The Italian bike maker, Ducati has effectively provided its loyalists with the best of both worlds in one bike. The Diavel is an ideal combination of a sports bike and a modern-day cruiser. The visually intimidating high-performance litre class bike gets three riding modes: Sports, Touring and Urban to suit diverse conditions. Be it long route cruising or rough road performance Diavel will not disappoint. Though the kerb weight is on the heavier side with 244 kg, however, its daunting 1198 cc, 4V, liquid-cooled EFI engine that blows 150 bhp (power) and 123 Nm (torque) makes the task effortless. For experienced riders who expect the best in terms of speed, agility, and precision, the BMW M 1000 RR is a high-performance sportbike. The bike is equipped with a potent 999cc four-cylinder engine that generates 205 horsepower and cutting-edge electronic technology that helps it operate at its best on the road or the racecourse. One of the lightest superbikes, BMW M 1000 RR weighs only 170kg, making it a smooth sail for adventure seekers. It has a max power of 209bhp and 113 Nm of torque. The M1000RR also has the best brakes, tyres, and suspension available, enabling riders to confidently tackle even the most difficult curves and turns. It is priced at Rs. 48,98,086.

Some areas are naturally and frequently exposed to high winds. Wind has a very significant impact on cycling speed, even quite gentle wind. Likewise temperature is a factor, with very hot and cold weather both acting to reduce average speed.

It's not about the bike? Well perhaps just a bit, especially where weight is concerned. Cyclists who have changed to carbon fibre bikes have told me their speed increased immediately by 5-10%. This was a greater improvement than I expected, and perhaps would only make such an important difference for cyclists in great shape.

Average speed varies to an extent with distance covered. Rides less than an hour or so in length will usually have a slightly lower average, because the first part of a ride is slower as your legs warm up. Rides between one and two hours usually have the greatest overall speed. Then for longer rides the average will often start to fall slightly, as fatigue plays an increasing role. For many of us rides over about three hours can become very tiring (assuming a reasonable sustained effort during those three hours!)

Older riders will usually be less strong at fast sprints or bursts up short hills, but very good at maintaining steady speed over longer distances. There are lots of 40-50 year old cyclists who can hold their own in rides with 25 year olds.

Cycling in a group - paceline riding - has very significant benefits. For much of the time you will be 'drafting' the person in front ie experiencing limited wind resistance yourself. Although the benefits this provides will vary with conditions and the number of people in the group, it is often said that the average cyclist's speed will increase 20-30% as a result of cycling in a group, even more.

So it is very unlikely your average solo speed will be comparable with the local cycling group. The Tour de France riders achieve 25 miles per hour over 125 miles, but that is very much due to the large size of the peloton (group of cyclists).
