I started the LC with some curiosity, wanting to learn a different way of grading to support our faculty. But while reading and learning about the specification grading, I realized that it could be a great way to grade for C/NC course such as a course IAS ran last autumn quarter for international students. This fall, we hope to offer another one for incoming transfer international students to help their adjustment and support their academic success. I hope to use the grading for the course.
I need to put a bit more thought into this but under the following assignments/activities, I plan to provide potential ways to get certain points (ex. Expectations for 10pt, 20pt, 30pt, or 40pt under each assignment).
Discussion (5pt each, 10 discussion total): 50 pt
Reflection Paper (200 words per paper, each 30pt, 2 papers total): 60 pt
Career Exploration Activity (Complete the Strengthsfinder and write a short report) :40 pt
Meeting with the instructors(one time): 20 pt
Presentation:30pt
Total: 200 points
In the beginning of the course, I will explain the grading rubric and have them decide which grade they pursue. * I think this can be a good activity to set up their own academic expectations in the first quarter in UWB.
One of the journals I read from the LC was really helpful for me to imagine the grading information for the course in a way to provide examples and expectations for students to set their own goals. The Autumn quarter will be the first quarter for me to try, so I will definitely need to revisit this after the autumn quarter is completed.
