This policy covers SpeakIt, the Android app published on Google Play by Solutio Nova (Dumitru Hristov) ("the developer"). It says what SpeakIt keeps, what leaves your phone, and why. Questions are welcome at supportsolutionova@gmail.com
SpeakIt has no account, no server of its own and no advertising. What you add to it stays on your phone, and the app sends the developer nothing about you or what you read. A few things do leave your phone, each described below: a web page you ask SpeakIt to fetch, usage figures that Google's on-device tools send Google (never your text, pictures or voice), purchases made through Google Play, and whatever your text-to-speech engine sends if you choose a voice that needs the internet.
Everything you add stays on your phone: your text and its corrections, titles, reading places, imported documents and the private copies SpeakIt keeps of them, scans, translations, settings, and how many free uses of Import, Scan and Translate are left. SpeakIt does not copy any of it anywhere. Android's cloud backup is switched off for SpeakIt, so none of it goes into your phone's backup; moving to a new phone with Android's own cable or Wi-Fi transfer may bring it along.
Two things are deliberately placed where other apps can see them:
Recordings and the sound files you save go to your phone's Music/SpeakIt folder, where apps allowed to read your music can read them too.
What you share or export from SpeakIt goes where you send it.
A web page you ask for. When you share or paste a web page's address, SpeakIt fetches that page from its site, always over a secure (HTTPS) connection, as a browser would. The site sees what any browser shows it: your phone's network address, the page asked for, your phone's languages and a browser-style name. SpeakIt keeps no cookies, signs in nowhere and sends nothing to a server of its own.
Google's tools that run on your phone. SpeakIt uses Google's ML Kit to recognise the language of a text, so that it is read in a matching voice; to read the text of a scanned page, of a picture from SpeakIt's camera and of a scanned PDF; and to translate. All of this runs on your phone: your text, pictures and voice are not sent anywhere. ML Kit does send Google usage and diagnostic information about itself — the phone's make, model and Android version, SpeakIt's name and version, an identifier for this installation, performance figures, settings such as a picture's format and size, which features ran and whether they failed, the size of what was processed, and the languages involved. Google receives it encrypted and does not pass it to anyone else. See Google's ML Kit data disclosure and ML Kit terms.
Downloads. A translation language or a scanning alphabet is downloaded from Google when you choose it; SpeakIt asks first. Google Play services downloads Google's document scanner when it is first needed.
Speech recognition. Conversation and Translate's microphone turn what you say into text with your phone's own on-device recognizer (Android 13 and later). SpeakIt never uses a recognizer that sends your voice over the internet.
Purchases. Full Access is bought through Google Play, which handles the payment under Google's own terms and privacy policy. SpeakIt learns only whether you have Full Access and never sees your payment details. Like every seller on Google Play, the developer receives Google Play's records of each order — what was bought, when, its price and taxes, and the buyer's country and region — and can look an order up by its number or the buyer's email address to help with it. While a screen reader such as TalkBack is on, Full Access is included: SpeakIt checks on your phone whether one is running, keeps no record of it and sends it nowhere.
Ratings. After you have shared texts into SpeakIt a few times, it may ask Google Play to show Google's rating card. Google decides whether the card appears, and anything you write there goes to Google Play under your Google account, not to SpeakIt.
Voices. SpeakIt speaks through the text-to-speech engines installed on your phone, such as Google's or Samsung's, which are separate apps with their own privacy policies. For a translation or a text in another language SpeakIt picks a voice that works offline; the voice you choose in Voices, or Android's default, may need the internet, and then its engine may send the text to its maker under that engine's policy. Get voice opens your engine's own list of voices to download.
Feedback. Send feedback opens your own mail app with a message to the developer, which you can read and change before sending; SpeakIt sends nothing itself.
Microphone: for Record, Conversation and Translate's microphone, and only after you press Record or a microphone button.
Camera: only for Scan and listen's guided camera, asked when it first opens. It reads the camera's picture on your phone to tell you where the page is, and keeps only the one picture it takes, in SpeakIt's own temporary storage. Scanning several pages uses Google's scanner in Google Play services, which uses the camera itself.
Notifications: to show a recording or a reading that goes on while SpeakIt is off screen, with its controls.
Network: for the web pages you ask for, Google's tools and downloads above, and Google Play.
Running in the background and after a restart: to keep a reading or a recording going off screen, and home-screen widgets working after the phone restarts.
SpeakIt asks for no contacts, location, phone or storage permission.
What SpeakIt keeps stays on your phone until you delete it in the Library or uninstall SpeakIt. Uninstalling removes everything except the recordings and sound files in Music/SpeakIt, which stay until you delete them, and what you shared or exported. If you write to the developer, your message and address are kept only to answer you, and deleted when you ask. The developer holds nothing else about you; Google keeps ML Kit's usage information and the purchase records under its own policies.
What SpeakIt keeps sits in its private storage on your phone, which Android keeps from other apps — apart from the Music/SpeakIt folder above. Everything SpeakIt sends travels encrypted: web pages over HTTPS only, and Google's tools and Google Play over their own encrypted connections.
SpeakIt is not directed at children under 13, and the developer does not knowingly collect personal information from children.
If this policy changes, the new version is published on this page with its date.
