Dr. Edward Heintjie Quiben is a dedicated young neurosurgeon-in-training currently serving as a Neurosurgery Resident at Jose R. Reyes Memorial Medical Center (JRRMMC) in Manila, Philippines.
He earned his Doctor of Medicine from Saint Louis University – School of Medicine, where he graduated 15th out of 163 students—an impressive achievement that reflects his strong academic performance. During his medical school years (2017–2021), he consistently made it to the Dean’s List for his outstanding academic results.
Before studying medicine, Dr. Quiben completed his Bachelor’s Degree in Medical Laboratory Science at the same university. He also became a Registered Medical Technologist, a qualification that gave him a solid foundation in laboratory diagnostics and research.
His academic excellence began early. During his high school years at Tarlac State University Laboratory School, he received multiple Academic Excellence Awards, proving his consistent dedication to learning.

Dr. Quiben’s research interests lie mainly in pediatric neurotrauma and skull base surgery. He is passionate about advancing clinical research and improving outcomes for patients with brain injuries and skull base conditions.

“A One-Year Retrospective Series of Pediatric Traumatic Brain Injury at a Tertiary Hospital in the Philippines”
at the 50th Annual Meeting of the International Society for Pediatric Neurosurgery (ISPN) in Toronto, Canada.
This presentation highlighted his efforts to analyze and improve outcomes for pediatric patients suffering from traumatic brain injury—a major concern in developing countries.

In this case study, Dr. Quiben will discuss how infrared thermography, a non-invasive imaging technology, can be used to monitor tissue temperature and blood flow during cranioplasty recovery.
Cranioplasty is a surgical procedure to repair defects in the skull after trauma or surgery. Complications can arise if the flap (the bone or material used to cover the skull defect) does not heal properly or loses blood supply.
By using infrared thermography, surgeons can visualize temperature differences in real-time, helping them identify areas with poor perfusion (blood flow). Guided needling techniques based on this imaging help restore circulation and promote recovery.
