My name is Bella and I have been a Girl Scout for 13 years. Throughout my time as a Girl Scout, I have had the opportunity to be a part of many community service projects, the biggests ones being the highest awards in Girl Scouts. The Girl Scout Bronze, Silver, and Gold awards are service projects that are aimed to help a Girl Scout's local community. This website and the exhibit inside the Eureka! McConnell Science Museum is my Gold Award. My project aims to help bring a resource for SPD to the Grand Junction community, and eventually other communities as well. My youngest sister was diagnosed with SPD when she was 4 years old. My parents struggled with diagnosing her and my sister didn't have many environments that were conducive to her needs. In cooperation with Eureka! McConnell Science Museum, I built sensory boxes that contain sensory items. These toys appeal to the stimuli in some children with SPD which might help them to calm down or serve as a distraction from environmental problems that may be causing them pain. My inspiration for the exhibit came from the sensory exhibit at the Denver Museum of Nature & Science in Denver, Colorado. That experience was informative and it was interesting to see how my sister interacted with the exhibits. Some additional resources that my family found helpful during my sister's childhood develop are:
