Guest Speaker: Special Education Services at the Haley Pilot School
Ms. Amy Donovan, Coordinator of Special Education, spoke about the new IEP process
New look for the IEP and also a new focus on student strengths and bringing in student voice more
Behavioral updates and communication updates are now required to be addressed for every student
Accommodations and modifications are now additionally listed in activities outside the classroom and academics such as lunch, recess, and extracurricular activities.
Ms. Donovan is working to make sure that the information has transferred smoothly from the old system to the new system. Some of the updated IEPs may need some editing, and Ms. Donovcan will make sure they are complete
Remember that you have a right to reconvene your child’s IEP team at any time to address any questions or concerns
Every student who has an IEP receives an annual review and a three-year re-evaluation. Families and/or school can also make a request for an unscheduled evaluation if there are needs identified that have not been adequately addressed.
A question came up about advocates involved in a student’s IEP process. When they are informed, advocates can add to the discussion at meetings.
The goal of special education support is the same as the goal for any child: to be independent and function well in the world.
