Haley Pilot School SPC Meeting
May 18, 2022
Welcome to Seema Sgobbo and Leigh Cirasuolo, Reading Specialists at The Haley
Ms. Sgobbo and Ms. Cirasuolo are part of the Reading - Academic Support Team at The Haley.
They work within all tiers of instruction: Tier 1 (whole class), Tier 2 (additional support for certain students), and Tier 3 (additional support for students who have needs possibly written into an academic support plan or an IEP).
Their primary role in the school is to strengthen the reading programs at each grade level and to provide small group and targeted instruction at the Tier 1 level. All Haley students are in small groups at one point or another, which is part of the Tier 1, or whole class instruction.
The Haley Reading Specialists are also part of their grade level teams.
Please check out the attached slides for some simple and easy ways to help support your child’s reading at home, and especially over the summer.
Some of these supports include
Read favorite stories repeatedly
Vary the types of books you read together
Have reading conversations before, during and after reading
Be a reader model
Encourage choice
Practice sight words
Create routines around reading
Allow for choices
Summer reading program/challenges
Use of apps at home - get a QR badge from your child’s teachers to use apps over the summer
The Haley Reading Specialists will take any donated books that families might be ready to move on. Please drop off at school!
Other SPC updates
$300 was recently raised through the Haley fundraiser with RozzieBound. Profits are made when people purchase books through the RozzieBound bookshelf that is curated for the Haley community.
Haley parent, Abby Machson-Carter, updated the group on the state receivership that is being considered for Boston Public Schools. There may be a vote coming up on Tuesday, May 24. See the attached slides, which have some information on how to take immediate action if you oppose the state receivership. Here is a site for more information: https://btu.org/ourcityourschools/ See the attachments below for more information.
The Haley is hosting a Spring Arts Festival on June 9 from 4:30pm to 7:30pm, on the Haley School Grounds.
This is a festival celebrating our childrens’ art and music.
Our first opportunity to come together as a community in quite some time to watch an art performance, enjoy food together, learn more about the SPC and the governing board, and raise money for our childrens’ learning (bake sale, raffles, etc.)
Please email haleyparentcouncil@gmail.com so you can be added to the SPC listserve.
