Debating the Liberal Pacification Kritik - Bill Batterman - In this elective, students will learn to argue and answer the Liberal Pacification Kritik and related critical theory arguments. The lecture will include an introduction to thecore controversies, a survey of the major authors, and strategic and tactical suggestions for better debating these arguments. This elective is appropriate for students of any experience level, but it is best suited for students who already have some familiarity with critical theory and debating critical arguments.
Overcoming Lack of Confidence - Maggie Berthiaume - Some debaters seem to be naturally confident (maybe TOO confident?) but for others, it's a struggle to compete and present yourself as the knowledgeable and well-prepared debater that you are. This elective will investigate some theories of confidence — where it comes from and why it sometimes disappears where you need it the most — and discuss how to improve your outlook and confidence to compete your best.
How to Write a Kritik Aff - Allegro Wang - In this elective, students will have the opportunity to see what goes into writing a K aff. How do you strategically select what aff to write? How do you research it? How do you practice it? It will compare that process with what it would be like to write a "policy" aff.
Going for the Kritik with a Policy Judge - Abby Schirmer - This elective will tackle the intersection of extending the K and judge adaptation in a particular situation. It will delve into how to make critical arguments appealing to more policy-oriented judges.
Risk - Ezra Serrins - The way we evaluate risk in debate is broken. Judges often assign "100%" risk to an argument simply because it has been asserted by a debater, and wait for specific refutation. This elective will unpack these assumptions and argue for an alternative model of risk assessment. Lastly, we will discuss deploying this as an argument in debate. Notes
How to Debate New Affs - Sam Grimsley - This elective will tackle the unenviable situation where you're debating a team breaking a new aff against you. It will discuss how to prepare to debate new affs and what to do when the situation arises.
