Spark Speech Multisyllabic Words is a free flash card app for iPad to use with students with apraxia, phonological disorders, neurogenic problems, or severe articulation disorders. It’s also broadly helpful for any person that may struggle with sequencing multiple syllable words together, which is a core lower elementary skill for phonological awareness.

This free app offers a wide variety of digital flashcards, allowing for targeted practice of two-, three-, and four-syllable words. The flashcards feature real life pictures, moving from the word level to phrase and sentence levels, allowing the user to build their level of mastery. Features include dots below images to emphasize the number of syllables in a word utilizing the child’s kinesthetic avenue of feedback in addition to the visual avenue.

Vowel sounds are most often the first sounds to emerge when acquiring speech. Correct vowel production is critical within our spoken speech for others to understand what we are communicating. Many consonants can be in error and speech is still understood, yet when someone has distorted vowel sounds it is very difficult to understand what they are trying to communicate. Those with apraxia, neurogenic, or severe speech sound disorders are in need of a way to practice these sounds during therapy or home activities. There are many applications for practicing consonant sounds but not so for vowels which are the sounds that are meaning carriers for speech.

Spark Speech Vowels is a flashcard app for iPad use that was created for speech therapists, educators, and parents in order to reinforce correct vowel production. It offers practice at the word, phrase, and sentence level featuring real life, easy to identify pictures for 15 vowel sounds in the English language.

Core vocabulary is a small set of words that are used frequently and across many contexts. Often times when a child has difficulty acquiring language we tend to focus on labeling objects, or in other words, we focus on nouns. However, core words are most often verbs, pronouns, and demonstratives because they represent words that are utilized across many contexts and can carry many meanings. 80% of what we say is communicated with only 200 basic words!

Context and experience are very critical in developing these core words as well as being able to expand upon the word meanings and providing repeated occasions for practice. Spark Speech Core Vocabulary Books provide the opportunity to expand and practice these words by utilizing real life picture books paired with simple text that show these core words being demonstrated over many contexts. It is a support for the teaching that goes on in the home and classroom.
