The name was originally DESPAR, an acronym of the Dutch phrase Door Eendrachtig Samenwerken Profiteren Allen Regelmatig[note 1] (English: "Through united co-operation everyone profits equally "), which was used by Van Well to describe the brand.[5] The acronym was chosen to resonate with the verb sparen, which (related to English spare) means "save [money]" in Dutch and some other languages, among them German[6] and Scandinavian languages (with variants such as spara or spare). In 2017, Ceylon Biscuits Limited in Sri Lanka acquired a license to operate the Spar brand in Sri Lanka as Spar Lanka. In 2022, Israeli supermarket chain Shufersal announced plans to open SPAR stores in Israel; with 10 stores to be opened in the first three years of operation.[33] Also in 2022, SPAR entered Latvia where by 2023 it opened 23 stores.[34][35]

KwikSPAR (only found in South Africa) are a smaller quick stop shop for convenience. They are larger than the conventional SPAR Express but smaller than the normal SPAR. These stores tend to have extended trading hours, some even being 24-hour convenience stores.

The town I was staying in was pretty small and the only grocery store available was a Spar, a grocery store chain founded in Holland with branches all over Europe, China, India, and several African countries, according to its website.

Outside of Easter celebrations in April, I don't see bunny-shaped chocolate in UK grocery stores unless I really go out of my way to find it. Standing next to the chocolates was also a cardboard cutout of Mozart, which slightly confused me at first until I discovered the famed composer was the face of an Austrian brand of chocolate.

And what I thought was really cool was how this Spar has a freshly-squeezed orange juice machine selling bottles in two sizes for 2.49 euros and 3.49 euros, or around $2.70 and $3.70. I'm really not a fan of store-bought juices or juices from concentrate, so this seemed like a cool alternative that I'd definitely try out if I was around longer.

Apparently Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, prolific Austrian composer, is the face of a chocolate brand being sold at Spar. This explained my prior confusion at seeing a cardboard cutout of him at the entrance of the grocery store.

The reason we use SPAR really comes down to efficiency. They provide us with the ability to scale as we grow. We also use them to help us conduct new store sets as well as remodels. It really provides us with a level of flexibility, a great deal of responsiveness, and frankly, they're easy to work with. SPAR has demonstrated the ability to be innovative, supportive, flexible, responsive and accountable.

What I like the most about working for SPAR is I get to work independently, have opportunities to travel, make good connections with store managers and staff, and work with a large variety of products, retailers and marketing processes.

Nice grocery store until you arrive at the checkout. In Dublin, we were charged 2 Euros instead of 20 cents. The same checker also gave me the wrong change to the tune of 2 Euros (about $3). I thought it was a fluke but he also cheated my sister in the same way. Now in Vienna my sister bought 6.40 Euro with of items. She gave the checker 7 Euros and he looked at it and looked at her as if to say she needed to give him more money. He finally relented after a staring contest and gave her 20 cents change! I believe 7 less 6.40 is 60 cents. I would have wrote it off to a vile check in Dublin but having it also happen in Vienna makes me wonder if it is corporate policy to have the checkers try to steal from tourists (or maybe even locals, who knows). But the thing is, math is not language specific. WE CAN ADD!! Shame on you Spar for encouraging staff to gyp customers.
