I share my musings about learning Spanish and provide you with tips to improve your skills!
I recently presented at the local library and followed up with attendees by sending them a playlist of songs they could listen to on a daily basis. With these songs, they can:
Get used to hearing Spanish.
Look up the lyrics and see Spanish.
Get acquainted with different artists.
Learn about different cultures.
Learn about even more artists through algorithms.
Do you like using YouTube to listen to music?
The first time I traveled abroad, I already knew enough Spanish to confidently order ice cream.
While the group stood staring at the menu, whisper-panicking about what to say, I stepped up and ordered without issue.
The worker smiled, and everyone became more relaxed.
What struck me wasn’t that I knew more Spanish. It was how one small skill completely changed the experience: I connected more easily, felt more grounded, and wasn’t afraid to wander, explore, or ask questions.
That trip is the reason I believe so deeply in what I’m teaching in my Spanish for Travelers event.
You don’t need to be fluent.
You don’t need perfect grammar.
You just need a handful of phrases and the confidence to try.
Do you remember the first time speaking another language made your travels easier—or more meaningful?

Maybe you've been thinking about studying Spanish for a while, but haven't pulled the plug because you've not found the "right" person to study with. Maybe you've got doubts about studying Spanish with someone who isn't a native speaker. Here are some reasons to consider studying with a non-native Spanish speaker:
Being a native speaker of a language doesn't mean you can teach it. I couldn't teach English to save my life.
I (an American) have learned to speak Spanish fluently, so that means you can too!
Non-native speakers know where learners get stuck, because we've gotten stuck (and unstuck) ourselves.
I can explain grammar, vocabulary, and nuance in clear, learner-friendly ways, as I had to master them step-by-step. That's exactly what you'll have to do!
Choosing a non-native Spanish teacher means choosing someone who understands all aspects of your journey. I've been where you are and know how to guide you to the other side. If you're ready to start learning, I'm here to help by making the process as enjoyable as possible!

Do you find it difficult to listen to Spanish that isn't spoken at a sloth's pace? Why is that? How can you fix it?
To get better at listening to Spanish, you need to do just that-listen! Listening, like speaking, reading, and writing, is a skill that takes practice.
Here are some ways to improve your listening skills:
Listen to podcasts in Spanish, such as Hoy Hablamos.
Do you like music? Try listening in Spanish! You could listen to Bad Bunny, Carlos Vives, Juanes, Shakira, etc. The list is infinite!
Watch Netflix, but in Spanish! And don't be afraid to put the subtitles in English. Money Heist and Velvet are just a couple of examples of shows you could watch.

Do you have a 1,765 day streak on Duolingo, but feel like you can't have a conversation in Spanish to save your life? You're not alone!
While DuoLingo is fun, you're not giving yourself the chance to practice communicating in real life. What good is it knowing about the horse's teeth collection when you can't talk to your friends about the super awesome vacation you just took? So...how do you fix it?
You need to immerse yourself in the language as much as possible, while actually using it. This could look like labeling items around your home in Spanish, watching shows in Spanish with subtitles, or having your usual conversations with yourself in Spanish.
