Las culturas afro-hispanoamericanas: la justicia racial en la literatura, el cine y la música

Descripción del curso: explora las diversas culturas afrodescendientes de América Latina, con enfoques sobre el Caribe hispano y Centroamérica, Colombia, Perú, Ecuador, México, Uruguay y Argentina. Mediante el estudio de géneros musicales y literarios, tanto como el cine; se profundizará la comprensión de lo siguiente:
el contexto histórico de las formaciones raciales en América Latina
cómo lxs artistas responden a la historia de la esclavitud, la colonización, y la marginación social
cómo se lucha frente al silenciamiento y la invisibilidad de sus comunidades y experiencias
las encrucijadas de raza/etnicidad, género, y sexualidad en estas experiencias
la valoración y celebración de la negritud/ la herencia africana
Student Learning Outcomes
Students will appreciate the richness of Afro-Latin American cultures in South America, Central America and the Caribbean.
Students will read and analyze significant literary works in translation by Afro-Latino writers from Cuba, Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Colombia, Honduras, Panama, Ecuador, and Peru.
Students will watch and analyze significant cinematic works about Afro-Latino cultures in South America, Central America and the Caribbean.
Advanced Writing Credit
This course fulfills one of the two courses required for Advanced Writing credit. AW courses practice and build on the writing skills learned in Foundation Writing. Specifically, this course will introduce important discipline-specific writing skills related to expectations for purpose and audience, organization, genre, and evidence. The course also includes opportunities for students to engage in meaningful revision with feedback from the instructor and/or peers.

Un poco sobre mí
Soy Patricio, tu profe de SPAN 250 este semestre. Nací y crecí en Dallas. Tengo cincuenta y siete años, y llevo veinte y seis de estos años de profesor en Austin College. Mi esposa Maggie y yo tenemos dos hijas, cuatro nietos, tres perros y una gata. Saqué el doctorado en 1994 de la Universidad de Texas en Austin. He publicado artículos y libros sobre la literatura y el cine de América Latina y España. ¡Me encanta el cine!
