Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD), which includes Ulcerative Colitis (UC), and Crohn's Disease (CD), is characterized by chronic inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract. In UC, inflammation occurs along the lining of the colon, and the rectum, while CD presents with inflammation that can be found anywhere along the lining of one's digestive tract and in other mucosal surfaces (gums). In recent studies, emerging evidence reveals a correlation between IBD and mental health disorders. As a young girl, diagnosed with UC, I believe it is important to begin conversations about IBD that aim to understand more about the development of this disease and how to best support patients suffering from both IBD and mental health disorders. To achieve this, I have developed a self-published, accessible, six-part podcast series to offer convenient, and easy-to-understand education geared towards those newly diagnosed with IBD or someone looking to support a loved one with IBD. In these episodes, we will explore the symptoms, signs, and management of IBD, hear from patient and doctor perspectives, and learn how it relates to mental health disorders. By offering this education, we can ensure that those who want to learn more are able to in an accessible manner.
