Abstract. We study the effect of concentration in the broiler packing sector on the markups charged by packers in the output market. Using a generalized Leontief function to model packers' markup, the effect of concentration on markup is decomposed into two countervailing forces: market power and cost-efficiency effects. Our findings show that while market power effects remained stable, the gradual decline in cost-efficiency effects has driven down the overall markup. This trend of decreasing markups has accelerated in recent years.
