Abstract. We study the effect of concentration in the broiler packing sector on the markdown applied by packers to broiler farmers. Using a generalized Leontief function to model packers' markdown, the effect of concentration on markdown is decomposed into two countervailing forces: market power and cost-efficiency effects. Our findings show that while market power effects remained stable, the gradual decline in cost-efficiency effects has driven down the overall markdown. This trend of decreasing markdowns has accelerated in recent years.
