Sowmya Dhanaraj

About Me

I am a Senior Research Fellow at Good Business Lab and an Assistant Professor of Economics (currently on leave) at Madras School of Economics. I completed my Ph.D. at Indira Gandhi Institute of Development Research (IGIDR), Mumbai in 2017.  I also completed my Masters at Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras and Bachelors at Birla Institute of Technology & Science (BITS) - Pilani, Goa Campus. I had been a visiting scholar at United Nations University - World Institute of Development Economics Research (UNU-WIDER) in 2017 and did my PhD internship at UNU-WIDER in 2013.

My research interests include Development Economics and Applied Microeconomics, focusing on labour, gender, health and education issues. My core teaching expertise include Mathematical Statistics, Econometric Methods, Applied Micro-Econometrics, Applied Multivariate Statistics.

I have been appointed as an expert committee member of State Planning Commission of Government of Tamil Nadu that was set up to draft the state policy on education and employment. 

I have won the 2024 ICIMOD-SANDEE grant, 2023 The Conservation, Food & Health Foundation grant to train women workers on sexual and reproductive health, 2022 SAR Gender Innovation Lab Fellowship of World Bank, and Emergent Ventures grant (2020 and 2022) jointly with Vidya Mahambare and 2020 APU research funding grant jointly with Vidya Mahambare and Sankalp Sharma.
