My name is Souvik Sasmal.
I am currently working as a Postdoctoral Scholar with Prof. Jyoti Katoch and Prof. Simranjit Singh in the LIQUID group at Carnegie Mellon University (CMU), Pittsburgh, U.S.A. Here, my research focuses on nano - angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy (nano-ARPES) on 2D devices. My research involves the fabrication of 2D devices and the investigation of the electronic structure of 2D materials in the low dimensional limit (mono-, bi-, tri-, or few-layer systems). We fabricate the devices at CMU and perform nano-ARPES experiments at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory.
Before joining CMU, I was a Ph.D. student at Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR), Mumbai, under the guidance of Prof. Arumugam Thamizhavel. There, I studied the electrical and magnetic properties of single crystalline materials. I always challenge myself to synthesize new and unique large-size crystals. The best thing is the excitement about the findings of the synthesis technique to discover a new material. In my M.Sc. from IIT Madras, I gained an interest in material science and started working on the synthesis of high-quality materials.
I love to discuss nature, science, and society with people. I believe conversation makes us more knowledgeable. As a researcher, I feel lucky to learned many experimental techniques and scientific ideas to put my small effort into advancement of the society.
