In October 2019, Southwest Airlines announces various updates to companion pass, rapid rewards points, and a chance to free same-day standby.

Points of Rapid Rewards don’t expire anymore

From 17 October 2019, the points of Rapid Rewards will no longer expire. Now, passengers have more freedom on how they want to redeem their points without any worry of their expiration. Previously, it was required for program members to keep their accounts active thorough earning points activities at least once every 24 months. But, now it’s not necessary to keep the account active.

Companion Pass: Earn big rewards

The Companion pass of Rapid Rewards program allows passengers to choose one individual to fly with them free of cost for the remainder of the year it is earned, plus the following calendar year. Currently, to earn a Companion Pass, the program members must either fly 100 one-way flights or earn 110,000 points in a calendar year. As of 1 January 2020, Members of Rapid Rewards program will require to earn 125,000 points to qualify for a Companion Pass for the following calendar year. The 100 one-way flight qualifying term will remain the same.

Members who currently have a Companion Pass still receive the benefits if they have 110,000 points by 31 December 2019.

Changes in Same-Day Standby

Currently, same-day standby benefit has no charges to A-List and A-List Preferred Members. However, this is going to be changed from 1 January 2021; the ‘free same-day standby’ will change to ‘same-day standby free of airline charges.’ That means members of A-List or A-List Preferred who modify or change their itinerary using the benefit of ‘same-day standby’ will have to pay the additional fees and government taxes that may apply.

Please note-

· To use this benefit, contact a customer service agent of the airline at the airport on the day of travel.

· This service is not available at the kiosks.

· This benefit is available for those A-List and A-List Preferred Members who are traveling before the original scheduled departure, between the same destinations, on the original date of the journey, if the seat is available.

· If the flights do not match the requirement, A-List and A-List Preferred Members will get the priority on the waiting list. However, they still need to pay the difference in fare and additional fees and taxes, is the seat is available.

· Before or on 31 December 2019, A-List and A-List Preferred Members will get the same same-day standby benefits.
