Don Hames, SLTL President 2025

Hi,

I'm Don Hames and my club is Enderby  B.C.

First a little background of myself. I started bowling in 1987 at Carlton IBC when it was first built.  Then the following outdoor season I joined Enderby B.C. where I remained until the season end of 1995 when my time was needed elsewhere. 20 years later in 2015 I re-joined both Enderby and Carlton becoming Tuesday 'B' captain for five years, then Wednesday captain from 2020 until present day. That's enough about me, now a few words about the league and coming season.

When I became president this year, I was unaware until the afternoon of the AGM when I was to become president, that the fixture Secretary Martyn had  resigned, therefore the league was in serious doubt as to whether it would continue after being in existence for 52 years. Fortunately, Andy Howes volunteered to take the roll of fixture secretary on, and along with Steve Elliott and myself we have managed not only to keep SLTL going, but have also accommodated five more teams into the league by adjusting  Division 5 a little.

In 2021 there were four divisions each consisting of eight teams.  2025 sees six divisions.   Five consisting of eight teams and one of seven teams. Also the 'End of Season competition'  has grown to 32 teams this coming season from 28 last. This to me is a clear indication that more people are taking up the sport and want to play competitively, which is a positive sign for the future of the sport of bowls. But with all this success, we do need more volunteers to be involved with the running of the leagues.  Checking and inputting 23 results from 46 teams and keeping league tables up to date is a big ask for one person.  So don't hesitate to come forward if you think you could help!

I would like at this point to thank Martyn for all his hard work and dedication over the years in running the league so successfully. Finally, my chosen charity this year year, is the 'Leicestershire Wildlife Hospital' at Kibworth. The hospital is a charity that receives no funding from anywhere other than what they raise themselves. It provides first aid to injured, sick, orphaned and distressed   animals and birds and returns them back to the wild once recovered .

The only thing left to say now is, have a good season, but most of all enjoy your bowling!

Don
