The Southern Tier Math Collaborative (STMC) is a PLT with members from Kindergarten-12th grade who believe all students are capable of learning math. Our goal is to improve and develop our practices as math educators so students see themselves as mathematicians. We strive to create mathematical communities in our classrooms that promote student equity and inclusivity by utilizing current research on collaborative learning, problem solving and productive struggle.
The Whale Pod PLT started in 2019 with a goal of articulating marine mammal skeletons that could be used in conjunction with authentic curriculum in K-12 classrooms. Through networking with College of the Atlantic and Allied Whale the skeletal remains of a White-sided Atlantic dolphin and a Harbor seal were received in boxes in 2021 to start the cleaning, bleaching, sealing, and articulation process. Currently, the Harbor seal is close to being fully articulated and 5-E lesson plans have and continue to be created to actively acquaint students in K-12 classrooms on marine mammals at a deeper level.
STEAM Leaders Outreach group is planning a science conference for local 4th-8th graders to engage youth in STEAM activities to inspire them in hopes they can see themselves in STEAM careers one day. The STEAM Leaders conference will be on a Saturday morning in November 2025 (location TBD and specific date TBD). Master Teachers can join this outreach group to help with the planning or to run a session at the conference (or both!).
