(VEHICLE MODIFICATIONS)
This section regulates alterations made to motor vehicles that may impact safety, emissions, or compliance with state transportation laws. It covers illegal performance enhancements, lighting and sound modifications, and structural changes that violate state standards, ensuring vehicles remain safe, lawful, and roadworthy.
Operation of a sound system exceeding 75 decibels within neighborhoods or areas governed by a Suburban Homeowners Association (HOA) is prohibited. Fine(s) up to $75-$800.
In all other areas of Texas, no decibel restriction applies.
Operating a vehicle with a modified stock exhaust system is prohibited.
Straight-piped vehicles or those without mufflers or catalytic converters are permitted only if equipped with an aftermarket exhaust system.
Stock exhaust systems may not be altered in any form.
Per County Ordinance, within Suburban HOA–regulated areas, law enforcement officers are authorized to issue citations for exhaust systems exceeding 95 decibels. Between $50-$500.
Vehicles taller than 13 feet and/or wider than 8 feet are not permitted on public roadways without an oversized vehicle permit and an escort vehicle.
Vehicles must display a clearly visible banner or sign stating “OVERSIZED LOAD.”
Operating an oversized vehicle without the required permit, escort, or signage constitutes an infraction.
Fine(s) Range: $150 – $500
Installation or use of unauthorized red or blue lights on a non-emergency vehicle.
It is unlawful for any civilian-operated vehicle to display red or blue lighting visible from the front or rear of the vehicle.
Includes strobes, light bars, or underglow that may impersonate law enforcement or emergency vehicles.
Charge is upgraded to a misdemeanor if lights are used to impersonate an emergency vehicle or obstruct traffic.
Fine(s) Range: $250 – $1,000
Operating a vehicle that is damaged or deteriorated to the point that it is unsafe for public road use.
Includes vehicles with broken lights, cracked windshields, missing body panels, or exposed mechanical parts.
Vehicles with faulty brakes, steering, or suspension systems fall under this charge.
Charge is upgraded to a misdemeanor if the vehicle poses an immediate danger to other motorists or pedestrians.
Fine(s) Range: $150 – $1,500
