HBCUs
Historically Black College & University (HBCU) were orginially founded to provide educational opportunities to people of African descent.
Applying to colleges can be stressful and expensive, especially if a student is applying to multiple institutions and has to keep track of and pay for each individual application. To alleviate that stress and get more students of color to college, Robert Mason created the Common Black College Application (CBCA). For $20 students can apply to 61 member HBCUs, and specify their top four choices.
WHAT IS YOUR SENSE OF BELONGING AT SOUTHERN?
Sense of belonging is the sense that students are important and respected members of Southern High School and is linked to higher grades, higher student engagement, self confidence, and acceptance. Students with a stronger sense of belonging, and connectedness to their school community, tend to have better academic and wellbeing outcomes than their peers with a less strong sense of belonging (Hagerty, Williams, Coyne, & Early, 1996).
