Transportation

By Train, from London City and London Airports

The University is roughly equidistant from Southampton's two mainline railway stations: the Airport/Parkway station and Southampton Central Staton. Bus connections from the latter are more frequent but the Airport/Parkway station is closer. The following applies to Southampton Central. Please take a look at https://www.nationalrail.co.uk/ for further information. Some train tickets can be used for the London Underground.

  • From London. Trains leave from London's Waterloo Station and it takes approximately 1h 20min (with no changes) during weekdays. For timetables, try National Rail, Trainline or South Western Railway.

  • From Gatwick Airport. it takes approximately 1h 50min / 2h 10min with usually one change. Note that some trains split into two parts, one going to Southampton and one to Bognor Regis: be sure to be on the right one! See below for the additional bus option.

  • From Stansted Airport. First, go to Central London, then take the train from London Waterloo. It can take 2h 30min usually.

  • From Heathrow Airport. There are two options. The first is to go from Heathrow to London Waterloo via the tube (1h) and then take the train from Waterloo to Southampton (1h 20). The second is to take the train to Woking (40 mins) and then take a train to Southampton (1h). See below for the additional bus option.

By Bus, from London City and London Airports

One can travel by bus with the National Express from London Victoria Coach Station (2h 30m), from London Heathrow Airport (2h) or from London Gatwick (3h). With the possible exception of the bus from Heathrow, trains are usually better to reach Southampton.

To the University, from City Centre/Central Station (leave at Highfield interchange)

The University is located to the north of the city of Southampton, 30 minutes ride by bus from the city centre. See https://www.unilinkbus.co.uk/, https://www.bluestarbus.co.uk/ or Google Maps for route planning and timetables. The University bus stop is called `Highfield, Centenary Building' and the name of the campus is Highfield Campus. This may be useful when planning the trip.
