Literacy in the Southampton Street Shelter

Nationwide Statistics on Homelessness

According to an article by the Nation Alliance to End Homelessness titled The State of Homelessness in America, "There is an estimated 553,742 people in the United States experiencing homelessness on a given night, according to the most recent national point-in-time estimate (January 2017)." This is very troubling and is something that needs to be worked on nationwide to decrease those numbers. A more current statistic from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development in 2020 in the article, titled HUD Releases 2020 Annual Homelessness Assessment Report Part 1, found that "580,466 people experienced homelessness in the United States on a single night in 2020, an increase of 12,751 people, or 2.2 percent, from 2019." These statistics give background as to the trend of homelessness nationwide over the last decade.
