On the other hand, the Generic or Universal Branch Code, like that of FBN, is a user-friendly code that applies universally to all branches of a bank. This single code can be utilised for transactions across any branch, regardless of where the bank account is held or established.

Major banks and financial institutions are widely adopting this user-friendly approach of employing a universal code. It serves as a highly convenient method for managing bank details, especially in the context of internet banking. This option offers a streamlined experience, allowing users to choose between the universal branch code or individual codes assigned to each branch location.

Capitec Bank has an extensive branch network in South Africa, serving customers in various cities and towns. Here are some of the major locations where you can find Capitec Bank branches along with their branch codes:

The IBAN consists of up to 34 alphanumeric characters comprising a country code; two check digits; and a number that includes the domestic bank account number, branch identifier, and potential routing information. The check digits enable a check of the bank account number to confirm its integrity before submitting a transaction.

Before IBAN, differing national standards for bank account identification (i.e. bank, branch, routing codes, and account number) were confusing for some users. This often led to necessary routing information being missing from payments. Routing information as specified by ISO 9362 (also known as Business Identifier Codes (BIC), SWIFT ID or SWIFT code, and SWIFT-BIC) does not require a specific format for the transaction so the identification of accounts and transaction types is left to agreements of the transaction partners. It also does not contain check digits, so errors of transcription were not detectable and it was not possible for a sending bank to validate the routing information prior to submitting the payment. Routing errors caused delayed payments and incurred extra costs to the sending and receiving banks and often to intermediate routing banks.[3]

IBAN imposes a flexible but regular format sufficient for account identification and contains validation information to avoid errors of transcription. It carries all the routing information needed to get a payment from one bank to another wherever it may be; it contains key bank account details such as country code, branch codes (known as sort codes in the UK and Ireland) and account numbers, and it contains check digits which can be validated at source according to a single standard procedure.[9] Where used, IBANs have reduced trans-national money transfer errors to under 0.1% of total payments

The BBAN must be of a fixed length for the country and comprise case-insensitive alphanumeric characters. It includes the domestic bank account number, branch identifier, and potential routing information. Each country can have a different national routing/account numbering system, up to a maximum of 30 alphanumeric characters.

According to the ECBS "generation of the IBAN shall be the exclusive responsibility of the bank/branch servicing the account".[9] The ECBS document replicates part of the ISO/IEC 7064:2003 standard as a method for generating check digits in the range 02 to 98. Check digits in the ranges 00 to 96, 01 to 97, and 03 to 99 will also provide validation of an IBAN, but the standard is silent as to whether or not these ranges may be used.

The list below was revised on 29 December 2021 and contains 23 of the most commonly used bank branch codes in South Africa. Although every care is taken to present correct information, things happen and these codes may change. If in doubt, do not use these codes, contact your bank.

As many have pointed out, the banking information fields that we are required to complete do not make provision for the name of the banking institution, merely the account number and the branch number. I am hoping that Amazon has their functionalities with the SARB to link the correct bank. As you mentioned Dave, I think the POP request will trigger once a purchase has been made and before the royalty payment is released. This will be my first trial with Amazon so I will wait and see what happens in a few months and report back to this forum, including how SARS treats the royalties.

Hi Dave. Thank you for this very helpful blog. I would like to ask 2 things. 1. Can the BSB be the universal branch number or the specific one for the bank. 2. If I fill in my SA TIN number does it mean Amazon will not deduct witholding tax. If thry are deducting the tax do I still pay income tax on the royalties I receive?

SWIFT stands for Society for Worldwide Interbank Financial Telecommunication, a secure messaging system used by banks to communicate with one another. SWIFT codes are an important part of ensuring this system works efficiently worldwide. BIC stands for Business Identifier Code, which refers to the code that identifies the bank branch information needs to be communicated to.

A Branch Code is simply a code that tells the area in which a bank is located. You can also call it a unique number allocated to every branch of a particular bank. Also, a Universal Branch Code is a user-friendly code that offers a single code for all the bank branches. It can also be referred to as a Generic Branch Code.

Please be advised that IBAN numbers are required when sending money to beneficiaries abroad, in this case the IBAN number will be provided directly by the beneficiary, however, when receiving money a Swift code will then have to be provided together with your banking details. The Standard bank swift code is SBZAZAJJ. If a beneficiary is not certain on the IBAN number, he/she can contact their branch to obtain this information.
