Sound Design for 6 Operator FM-Synthesizer
The miniDexed:
The miniDexed is an outstanding DIY synthesizer that brings the FM synthesis of the iconic Yamaha DX7 back to life in a compact, affordable, and flexible form. It combines powerful software, customizable hardware, and a passionate community to create the perfect tool for musicians, sound enthusiasts, and tech lovers.
The miniDexed is built on a flexible and accessible hardware design, allowing users to customize the project to their needs.
Processing Power:
The synthesizer uses a Raspberry Pi (models like Raspberry Pi 2, 3, 4, or Zero 2) as its main processor. This provides enough power to emulate up to eight independent DX7 tone generators.
Audio Output:
Audio is delivered through a high-quality I²S sound card or the Raspberry Pi’s built-in audio hardware.
Controls:
The miniDexed can be equipped with a display (e.g., OLED SSD1306 or LCD1602) and rotary encoders (KY-040) for easy operation. Alternatively, it can be controlled via MIDI controllers or buttons connected to the GPIO inputs.
Power Supply and Case:
The hardware only needs a USB power supply, making it portable and versatile. Many users design custom cases, ranging from simple and minimalist to professional-looking designs.

Authentic FM Synthesis:

The performances cover a wide range of sounds, from classic electric pianos and punchy basses to lush pads, warm strings, drum-kitsand dynamic synth textures. With support for eight independent tone generators, you can create multitimbral arrangements for even complex music productions.
High Polyphony:
Each of the eight tone generators supports up to 32 voices of polyphony (on Raspberry Pi 4 or higher), providing a total of up to 256 voices. This makes the miniDexed a powerful tool for orchestral arrangements and dense soundscapes.

For this project, I try to reduce the equipment to the bare essentials. All sound Demos I show here were recorded with the following equipment:
1 miniPC with Celeron N5095 CPU + monitor + Windows 11
Audio interface, Behringer UMC1820 (any other interface with a stereo line input will also work)
DAW, Steinberg Cubase 12 LE (eBay approx. 12EUR)
PlugIns free VST: Dexed, A1StereoControl(SafeBass), LoudMax, Cymatics - Origin, Voxengo SPAN (a great help in sound design)
other Software: MIDI-OX, LibreOffice
