If you want over-ear hybrid noise cancelling with marathon battery life and a wired fallback, choose Soundcore Anker Q20i; if you need sweat-resistant true wireless earbuds that stay put through a workout, choose JLab.
These two are not really rivals — they solve different problems. One is a pair of over-ear noise cancelling headphones built for long listening sessions. The other is a set of sport earbuds built to survive the gym. Here is how to pick.
• Soundcore Anker Q20i — biggest strength: Hybrid active noise cancellation plus an enormous 40-hour battery rating, and a 3.5 mm jack so you can keep listening when the battery is gone.
• Soundcore Anker Q20i — biggest trade-off: It is a full-size over-ear design in plastic and polycarbonate. Bulkier to carry than buds, and there is no sweat or water rating listed.
• JLab — biggest strength: IP55 sweat and dirt resistance with an over-ear hook design, so they hold their place during running, lifting or anything high-motion.
• JLab — biggest trade-off: No noise cancellation at all, and the 35+ hour total playtime is split between the buds and the case rather than sitting in the headphones themselves.
• Buy the Soundcore Q20i if you want quiet, immersive listening on a plane, a train, or at a desk for hours at a time.
• Buy the JLab Go Air Sport+ if your priority is a secure, sweatproof fit for training and you want to stay aware of traffic or gym surroundings.
The Q20i is an over-ear Bluetooth headphone with hybrid active noise cancellation, and that combination is the whole point. Hybrid ANC means the noise cancelling is handled with more than one microphone arrangement, which is the approach brands typically use when they want cancellation to work across a broader range of low, steady noise — engine drone, air conditioning hum, the general wash of a busy open-plan office. If your listening happens in noisy places and you want the noise pushed down rather than just masked by volume, this is the design that does it.
The battery figure is the headline number: 40 hours of rated playtime with ANC on. That is a genuinely long stretch — enough that you can go days between charges on a normal commute-and-work routine, and enough that a long-haul flight does not require you to ration listening. A 5-minute charge time is also listed, which tells you top-ups are meant to be quick rather than an overnight affair. And because there is a 3.5 mm jack alongside the wireless connection, the Q20i keeps working as a plain wired headphone if the battery ever runs out or if you want to plug into a laptop, in-flight system or audio interface directly.
Sound quality is anchored by a dynamic driver covering 20 Hz to 20,000 Hz, with Hi-Res Audio and big bass called out in the product naming — so the tuning leans toward a fuller low end rather than a flat, clinical presentation. Everything is adjustable through an app, which matters more than it sounds: the EQ and media controls live in software, so you are not locked into one stock sound. Bluetooth 5 with a 10-metre range is standard modern fare and plenty for moving around a room. It ships with a carry case and comes in white.
Buy it if you want one headphone for commuting, flights, office work and long listening sessions, and you value noise cancelling and battery life above all else. Skip it if you mostly train, run or lift — there is no sweat or water resistance rating here, and an over-ear headphone is the wrong shape for that job.
The JLab Go Air Sport+ is a completely different animal: true wireless in-ear sport earbuds with an over-ear hook. The hook is the defining feature. Instead of relying on the seal of a tip alone to hold the bud in place, the hook wraps over the ear, which is exactly the design you want when you are moving — running, cycling, rowing, jumping, lifting. JLab also notes this is their smallest sport fit, and three sizes of gel tips are included so you can dial in the seal. Get the seal right on any in-ear bud and you get better bass and better isolation as a side effect.
Durability is the other selling point. The IP55 rating covers sweat and dirt, which is the realistic threat profile for gym and trail use. That is not a claim of being swimmable, but it is the right rating for hard training in hot conditions.
Battery is handled in two stages: 9+ hours in each earbud, plus 26+ extra hours in the charging case, for 35+ hours total. Ten minutes in the case reportedly buys you an hour of playtime, which is the kind of top-up that fits a real gym schedule. The case charges over an integrated USB cable.
Two practical features stand out. First, Be Aware Mode lets ambient sound in on purpose — genuinely useful if you run near roads or want to hear a training partner. Second, each bud can be used independently, so you can run one ear in and keep the other open. Calls are handled by a MEMS microphone in each bud with clear-calling as the goal. Sound is a 6 mm dynamic driver covering 20 Hz to 20,000 Hz, tuned through the JLab App with EQ presets including JLab Signature, Balanced and Bass Boost, plus touch control customisation. Colour is coral, the enclosure is plastic with silicone tips, and there is a two-year JLab warranty.
Buy it if your earbuds live in a gym bag and your main worry is them falling out or dying mid-session. Skip it if you need noise cancelling — there is none listed here, only Be Aware Mode, which does the opposite job.
• Best for noise cancelling → Soundcore Anker Q20i. Hybrid ANC versus none on the JLab. This is not close.
• Best for total battery stamina → Soundcore Anker Q20i. 40 hours rated in the headphones themselves, against 35+ hours split across JLab's buds and case.
• Best for workouts and sweat → JLab. IP55 sweat and dirt resistance plus the over-ear hook. The Q20i lists no such rating.
• Best for secure fit during movement → JLab. Over-ear hooks and three tip sizes beat a plain over-ear headphone for high-motion use.
• Best for situational awareness → JLab. Be Aware Mode is built for hearing your surroundings; the Q20i is built for blocking them out.
• Best for wired listening → Soundcore Anker Q20i. The 3.5 mm jack means it works with no battery and with non-Bluetooth sources.
• Best for long sessions at a desk, on a plane or on a train → Soundcore Anker Q20i. Over-ear comfort and ANC are the right tools for hours of stationary listening.
• Best for one-ear use and calls on the move → JLab. Independent bud use and a MEMS mic in each bud suit phone calls during activity.
In my opinion, the Soundcore Anker Q20i is the better buy for most people, because it covers more of daily life: noise cancelling for commutes and travel, a 40-hour battery rating that removes charging anxiety, app-based tuning, and a wired fallback that makes it useful even when the battery is flat. The JLab is excellent at exactly one thing — surviving a workout — and it does that job with a fit and a durability rating the Q20i simply does not offer. So I would choose based on your routine. If you train hard several times a week, buy the JLab. If your listening is commuting, working and travelling, buy the Q20i and don't overthink it.
Yes. The Q20i uses hybrid active noise cancellation. The JLab Go Air Sport+ lists no noise cancelling feature — its Be Aware Mode deliberately lets outside sound in. If quiet is the goal, the Q20i is the one.
I would not recommend it as a first choice. There is no sweat or water resistance rating listed for the Q20i, and it is an over-ear design. The JLab's IP55 rating and over-ear hooks are built for that environment.
Not in the headphones themselves. JLab rates 9+ hours per earbud with 26+ more hours in the case, for 35+ hours total. The Q20i is rated at 40 hours with ANC on — all of it in the headphones, no case required.
The Soundcore Anker Q20i. It has a 3.5 mm jack in addition to Bluetooth, so it works with wired sources and when the battery is empty. The JLab earbuds are wireless only with no jack.
Match the product to where you listen. Gym, running, sweaty training and awareness of your surroundings point to JLab. Flights, commuting, offices and long at-desk sessions point to the Soundcore Q20i. Check the current price on Amazon for each before you commit.
