Love, Hope & Peace with Native Rose  (Video Performance from PRAx)

Jan Michael will share a welcome message.

“Hayu-masi (many thanks in my Tribal language)! Being part of the incredible collective greatness of OSU is among the greatest honors of my life. There is no award or recognition that can compare to being there when students connect with their own musical self-expression while they also embrace their feelings and self-worth. My colleagues, students, and faculty continue to provide inspiration. In Tribal culture, teaching is one of the highest honors in the circle. Everyone’s voice and feelings are important.  We all come from Mother Earth and thusly are all related.  I maintain hope that one day the beautiful, incredible diversity of humanity will be fully embraced.   There is still time to show our children that they can walk in beauty, live in peace, and play together in harmony.”  

Sharing the beauty of personal musical self-expression with the Native American Flute is a dedicated focus of Jan’s life.  He founded the World Flute Circle that has members spanning every continent with online play along events for world peace.  

Jan is currently touring with his band "Native Rose", a special performance group that promotes world peace, diversity, equality, social equity, and unity. The uplifting music fusion of the Native Rose includes a beautiful blend of vocals, Native American Flutes, guitars, indigenous chants, violin and world percussion that share an inspirational message of everyone's connection to each other and Mother Earth.

Jan Michael Looking Wolf Reibach

Jan Michael Looking Wolf Reibach is an enrolled member of the Kalapuya Tribe. He is a Global Music Awards Lifetime Achievement Award Recipient and Hall of Fame Inductee by One World Music Radio. Additionally, he is a 28 time commercial recording artist with 70 national awards for his music.   A Kalapuya Tribal Elder of the Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde, who resides within his indigenous homelands, Jan Michael Looking Wolf  is a Global Music Award Lifetime Achievement Recipient, Hall of Fame Inductee by One World Music Radio, and Artist of the Year Winner by the Native American Music Awards.  In addition to being a renowned musician with 30 commercial recordings/700+ performances/70 award recognitions, Jan instructs Native American Flute at Oregon State University. Following years of research and lecturing, he worked with the professors in the Music Department and Ethnic Studies to develop accredited curriculum in 2004 for a course that focuses on cultural diversity and musical self-expression with the instrument.   As of 2024, he has taught over 18,000 students how to play the Native American Flute.  His classes have received awards for the most popular course by the students and are among the highest in ethnic-diverse participation at OSU. Jan helps coordinate the world record flute circle with over 600 students of the Native American Flute performing songs in harmony together as part of annual event at the University.  Jan is an author of two published books centered on the Native American Flute, including “One Heart, Journey with the Native American Flute” which he provides for free to his university students. His second book, “The First Flute” is co-authored with top selling Canadian Aboriginal author David Bouchard.  A hard cover book published by Red Deer Press, Jan wrote the original story of a young native brave who, with the help of creation, finds the first flute and plays for love.    

Transmutation Mural - OPEN WORKSHOP

Join OSU arts faculty Johnny Beaver and his Painting II: Concepts class for a casual workshop exploring the transmutation of sonic materials into visual art. Multiple, hands-on synthesizer stations will be erected where visitors are invited to listen, play, and learn about modular synthesis as well as methods for converting what you hear to what you see (and back again!). Participants will have access to a number of mark-making tools and are encouraged to participate in a large scale, collaborative mural based on the various sonic elements on hand. No experience necessary, all are welcome!


Johnny Beaver

I am an artist and arts educator living in Oregon's Wilamette Valley. I conduct an exploratory practice and research related to multidisciplinary / anti-disciplinary art-making, with an emphasis on modular sound design, painting, drawing, and new media. In search of new genres, I see disciplinary art as a vehicle for a more fundamental interest in cross-discipline communication, collaboration, and alternative documentation.

I am currently working as a full time instructor of art at Oregon State University, primarily teaching intermediate and upper division painting and drawing.

About“MFA Workshop: Spontaneous Poetry”

Jack Kerouac called his raw, improvisational writing style “spontaneous prose”: a process of letting words flow freely, without stopping to edit or censor them, in order to capture the authenticity of an experience. In this collaborative workshop, OSU’s MFA poetry students will improvise lines in response to live music, creating poems as time capsules that will capture the tone and essence of that particular moment.

Jennifer Richter, Assistant Professor of English and Creative Writing, is a two-time Oregon Book Award finalist and author of Dear Future, her just-released third poetry collection. In her courses at OSU, Richter prioritizes innovative student collaborations between poets, musicians, and visual artists.


Sounds From The Stars - AstroBoy Returns from 1953 

 Sounds From The Stars - AstroBoy Returns from 1953 - a live electronic music performance incorporating extensive improvisation around a theme of growing up in the 1950s & 60s during the era of manned space exploration ending with the 1969 moon landing. Intertwined are original spoken word pieces using real-time voice manipulation with vocoder, looper, pitch-shifter, & harmonizer. An earlier version was performed during the 2022 PNW International Looping Festival.

James Whittemore

James Whittemore has been composing electronic music since the early 1970s.  In the mid-70s, he was Office Manager for the US importer of EMS synths and sold Moog modulars to schools.  A founding member of agit-pop punk dub band, The Scientific Americans, he performed with tape loop devices, Synthi AKS, & MiniMoog.  He has recorded with Elliott Sharp, Human Error, and WKGB.  Recent performances include the Stanford Day Of Noise, Robotspeak Church of The Super Serge in San Francisco, Pacific Northwest Looping Festival, and the Soundbox series at OSU.

Bluessence

Bluessence was founded in Corvallis, OR. in August 2023 with the intent of highlighting young women and nonbinary folk in music. Starting out with influences from formal jazz band education to punk and neo-psychedelia, Bluessence has culminated into its current formation of an Ethereal Grunge Movement. Its current lineup is Annabella, lead composer, on the keys, vocals and guitar, MJ on the bass, Brennan Blackwood, on the drums, and Ericson Storey, an OSU alumni all the way from Bellingham, Washington playing thoughtful, emotive and progressive lead melodies on the guitar. All 4 members creatively collaborate and build each song by writing their own parts based on a structure or motif conducted and/or composed by Annabella in order to aid listeners in opening their minds to remember our path to universal healing.  Instagram: @bluessencetheband

Ticket To Drown & Last On Earth

Ticket To Drown is an original artistic representation of pollution and global warming and how we desperately must stop and drop what we are doing to change environmental policy for the better of  mother earth's future. Utilizing elements and instrumentation of rock music, as well as emotive and improvised modern dance at the start. 

Last On Earth is an original piece about the struggles, inequity, and experiences that women go through on a daily basis and have undertaken for centuries of ancestral trauma. It specifically references what it is like for a women in music or a creative field and it brings empowerment and a voice to all those who have been silenced and may feel like they are the "Last On Earth, won't be the last ones heard." Lyrics and structure may involve improvisation and experimentation during this performance.


Joshua Phillips

Joshua Phillips is a Corvallis, OR based multi-instrumentalist, composer, and studio engineer. Drumming for the band Coastal Saturday and playing saxophones, percussion, or guitar in many other groups gives him the opportunity to follow his passions as a performer and multi-instrumentalist; however, in February 2024 he released his debut solo bossa nova EP entitled “TSL”. Setting forward that blooming solo project, he is returning for his second year performing at SoundBox showcasing new original and cover content!

Aliyah Lopez

My name is Aliyah Lopez but my friends call me Iyah for short. I'm a graphic designer at Oregon State graduating in 2024. I will also be minoring in Studio Art so today I'll be showing you one of my 2D pieces. I was born in California but Oregon raised, as a military brat I like to make anywhere home. Some things about me is that I really enjoy my television and movies- with graphic design I plan to go into film poster production and animation. Feel free to ask me anything Star Wars, Tarantino, A24, or horror.

My name is Cameron Landers. I am an improvisational artist. Jazz, ambient, lowfi and afrobeat are elements from which I create my work. The guitar is my primary instrument from which I create my sonic explorations.

Monkey Mode 

Monkey Mode is a jazz-funk jam band that places an emphasis on improvisation and longform solos. Their original music crosses the barriers between funk, rock-n-roll, and hip hop, all with a jazz influence. The group consists of Andrew Bell on keys, Paul Streichan and Wesley Yost on electric guitars, Scott Kanavel on bass, Logan Anderson on drums, and Jordan Lapp on alto saxophone as well as various featured musicians. Based in Bend, OR

Paul Streichan wrote this tune. This song is an adaption of a hard hitting funk in a minor mode for most of the tune.

Sage Jarvie is a collaborative and self-motivated double major in Music Technology & Production and Digital Communication Arts, with multi-instrumental and communicative skills. With drive for furthering knowledge and experience regarding everything music production and audio tech.

Mackenzie Ruff, SOUNDBOX7 Curation & Production Team 

I’m Mackenzie Ruff, a soon-to-be graduate from Oregon State University with a bachelor's degree in Music Technology and Production(MTP) and Human Development and Family Sciences(HDFS). Gaining knowledge quickly in Audio engineering, Ive dived into experiencing the many varieties of jobs this field has to offer. I have various types of experience from working individually with students, guiding them through problems, developing creative ideas, and assisting them with recording and post-production, to organizing concert events and running social media for the MTP Program. Working in dynamic environments with diverse groups of people has taught me to quickly adjust to new situations and collaborate effectively with different personalities, which is a large benefit when working in studio sessions and other audio projects. Becoming passionate about music was natural because it uplifts spirits, soothes troubled minds, and inspires creativity. In my free time I make music with my band, singing and playing the guitar. I also work on various side projects gaining more experience as a producer/audio engineer. 

SOUNDBOX7 Team 

As part of the  Soundbox7  Curation & Production  Team, I contributed to festival planning and organization, as well as being an audio-engineer and technician of live events. Additionally, I am the Producer & Co-project Manager of the Album Project, and composed "Palindrome", an 8-channel soundscape showcased at SOUNDBOX7 on Monday, May 20th!

Shane Prendiville  

Shane Prendiville  is a Contemporary Music Industry student at OSU Ecampus.  Guitarist, drummer, vocalist.  I started playing guitar in 1991 and have continued onward through all trials and tribulations.  I am a recording engineer who has recorded with gear from 2” tape machines to many DAWs to broken cassette recorders, all have a special quality.  Musically I am proud of past composing accomplishments for bands, radio/podcasts, and different forms of visual media.  Performing live has always been a highlight even when the show didn’t go well.  I love creating improv scenarios to have fun, think, and engage deeply with other players.

Mike Gamble & Devin Febbroriello


Mike Gamble is an adventurous guitarist and multi-instrumentalist whose work with electronic modes of composition are integrated endlessly into his setup. Gamble has spent the last 20 years immersed in the creative jazz, experimental rock and improvised music scene primarily in NYC, with close ties to New Orleans, Burlington, Boston, San Francisco and now the Pacific Northwest. He has had the pleasure of recording over 50 albums and has been touring the states, Canada, and Europe with his critically-acclaimed guitar trio The Inbetweens, Mike Gamble Solo, and alongside doom-metal originators Earth. His more recent collaborators include Bobby Previte, Todd Sickafoose, Nels Cline, Wayne Horvitz, Esperanza Spalding, Matt Chamberlain and Lori Goldston.  Since relocating to Portland,  Mike Gamble has dived into the jazz and experimental, Pop, Indie Rock, and electronic/modular scene and gigs 4-7 times a week. He currently holds a position as a Contemporary Music Industry instructor at Oregon State University, and a guitar teacher at both Willamette University and Reed College and is the Artistic Director of Portland’s long standing experimental music organization, The Creative Music Guild.

Devin JANE Febbroriello is a North American film director + screenwriter that specializes in the creation of thought-provoking stories centered on women, complex relationship dramas, and humor. Evocative characters and contemplative multi-genre plots combine with traditional storytelling techniques to cultivate her deeply emotive works. Devin’s practice is informed by a fierce love of cinematic storytelling mixed with her deep-seated interest in films unique capacity to poetically investigate the human condition and cultivate a profound sense of connection.  Although her work is rooted in traditional cinema, she also explores new media and emerging technology. 

Devin has created award-winning music videos and short films that have screened at Pitchfork, Filmfort, Venice VR Expanded, Bend Film Festival, Stereogum, Rolling Stone, and more. She is a vetted director listed on Free The Work, a RACC Project Grant/Innovation Prize recipient 2020, Arts 3C Grant 2023 recipient, as well as a Lucas Artist Fellowship Collaborator 2017-2020. Her pilot script for the episodic series "Blood is Thicker" was a finalist in Screencraft TV Pilot Script Competition.  She received her Bachelor of Art in film from Emerson College, attended specialized cinema studies at FAMU (Czech Republic), and holds a Master of Fine Arts degree in Screenwriting through the David Lynch School of Cinematic Arts at Maharishi University. Her debut feature Kathleen's Sound Bath and her next short film Shit Talker are both in development.

In 2021 Devin partnered with Desert Island Studios to develop a full-service production company in-house. She is currently the Head of Production at Desert Island Studios and leads both creative and operational production initiatives at the studio serving clients from major brands and supporting the next generation of up and coming talent from diverse backgrounds. Devin has been a media activist her entire career working with forward thinking organizations devoted to evolving the media industry to be more equitable and inclusive.

Devin was born in the Northeast but currently lives in the Northwest with her husband. She is available for work worldwide and maintains a strong network of collaborators in Portland Oregon, New York City, and Los Angeles.

Gold Rush by They Gamble 

An  A/V performance featuring audio reactive projections and improvisations by interdisciplinary performance artists THEY GAMBLE.  Gold Rush is an exploration of the symbolic, literal, and figurative nature of Gold. How is it that one precious metal atomic number 79 has held such a firm position of power for so long? What is the point of gold?  Why does it have value at all?  During our performance we will utilize a midi controller to synthesize the electromagnetic forces of a gold nugget into an audio visual display, and interact with sound to create an improvised sonic and visual landscape.  The live  time based audio reactive processing will be presented in tandem with a series of found/original video footage, spoken word, and sound effects collected through our research about Gold.

Dana Reason, Soundbox7  Artistic Director

Dana Reason, a Canadian-born composer, music supervisor, recording artist, researcher, and educator, recently scored the original music for the feature film “The Wonder and The Worry,” directed by David Baker, which premiered at PRAx. She co-produced Cinema’s First Nasty Women Compilation Soundtrack Vol. 1 (Kino, 2023) with Grammy award-winning musician Terri Lyne Carrington. Reason was the arranger for the award-winning series: Reconstruction: America After the Civil War Series, produced by Henry Louis Gates (PBS, 2019). She has written music for other feature-length films including: Back to God’s Country (Kino) and The Snowbird (Kino), as well as music for many short films. She has over 20 commercially released recording projects, on such labels as Mode Records, Wide Hive, Red Toucan, 482, Circumvention, Deep Listening, and others. Alongside her artistic pursuits, she writes about creative intercultural music; feminist improvisatory and sound studies practices. Her music and projects have been reviewed in the San Francisco Chronicle, Oxford University Press, Columbia University Jazz Studies Online, University of Chicago Press, National Geographic, McGill-Queen’s University Press, Wesleyan University Press, Downbeat, Jazziz, All Music, and Musicworks. Currently, Reason serves as an Assistant Professor of Contemporary Music at Oregon State University and is the Co-ordinator for the Contemporary Music Industry Major (Ecampus).

Jason Fick

Jason Fick is Associate Professor and Coordinator of Music Technology and Production at Oregon State University, where he teaches courses in composition, audio technologies, and music production. His research explores relationships between commercial and experimental media, and has been published by Audio Engineering Society, Organised Sound, International Community on Auditory Display, IEEE Robotics and Automation Letters, Journal of General Music Education, and College Music Society. As a composer, his electronic music has been performed at academic and public concerts, festivals, and conferences throughout the United States, Europe, South America, and Asia, including ICMC, NYCEMF,  SEAMUS, WOCMAT, ICAD, CMS, ATMI, Electroacoustic Barndance, International Horn Symposium, and International Tribunal on Fracking and Human Rights. Jason is a past President of College Music Society Northwest Chapter and is the current Vice President for the Association of Technology in Music Instruction (ATMI). Album Release Party & 8-channel 

In 2024, the Music Technology and Production area at OSU produced an album in response of a university-wide call for songs. We selected 10 diverse tracks from over 30 submissions to comprise the album, which was produced by OSU MTP students. Each selected songwriter was paired with student producers in the MTP area. The songwriters and producers worked closely to shape the final version of each song. Please come celebrate the release of our newest album on Tuesday, May 21st. We will play the album and hear from the artists and producers on their process. Light refreshments will be served.

Come join students from MUS 443: 8-channel composition as they host an octophonic concert featuring original music. 8-channel is an immersive and dynamic listening experience that utilizes eight speakers surrounding the listener. Close your eyes and let this music place you in another environment while painting pictures in your mind. Musical influences include soundscape, electroacoustic, video games, commercial music and more! Hear music created by OSU students Megan Vasquez, Andrea Sullivan, Mackenzie Ruff, Sage Jarvie, Cruise Hawk, Jed Knorr, Jacob Ire, and Andrew Lloyd McNemar.

I have been playing violin for 15 years and am currently a music technology and production major here at OSU. I have been trying to experiment a lot more with composition these past couple of years, and I enjoy writing pieces for strings because those are what I feel most familiar with as a musician, but I have been having a lot of fun trying to experiment with more instruments too.


Serenade Sognante: for String Orchestra

I have been working on Serenade Sognante—or “Dreamy Serenade”—for a couple of months now; it started off as a couple of funky chords and then a nice melody started to develop. It’s been fun taking this one original dreamlike theme—which you hear in measure 23—and coming up with nice harmonies that then develop into their own melodic characters themselves. It’s really engaging taking these concepts of developing themes that you hear while listening to classical or instrumental music and then applying them to my own music—which also inspired the traditional Italian translation of the name. Sustainable Development Goals Roulette: an AI + Human Improvisation Performance.

Sustainable Development Goals Roulette: an AI + Human Improvisation Performance. In this live, collaborative AI improvisation performance, the artist runs a custom AI GPT created by him in ChatGPT to randomly select one of 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Once selected, the program produces a 50 % chance positive or negative result, writes a description of the obtained or non obtained goal and then creates an image and a Haiku based on the result. The artist then improvises a live audio composition reflective of the image and Haiku, serving as an artistic commentary on the possible SDG end result and future.



Andrew Myers 


Andrew Myers is an Oregon based visual artist and educator who explores the concepts of instinct, extinction, isolation and the conservation and preservation of wild places and creatures in work that is drawing-based with elements of installation, printmaking, sculpture and animation. He received his undergraduate art degree from Eastern Oregon University and an MFA from Portland State University.

Myers is a 2024 recipient of the Individual Artist Fellowship from the Oregon Arts Commission and has exhibited in multiple venues both nationally and internationally. Myers currently teaches at Oregon State University.

Jamie Cornelius 

Jamie Cornelius is an associate professor at Oregon State University in the Department of Integrative Biology. She studies how birds cope with unpredictable challenges in their environments, like storms, fires and droughts. She is passionate about both science and music and enjoys trying to weave the two together in unexpected ways. She earned a B.S. in Zoology at the University of Washington and a PhD in Animal Behavior at UC Davis. She spent several years as a post-doctoral scholar at the Max Planck Institute of Ornithology in Germany and as a Fulbright fellow at St. Petersburg State University in Russia and is currently a National Geographic Explorer and a National Science Foundation CAREER awardee. Jamie teaches Behavioral Neurobiology where she likes to include stories about how our brains respond to music.

Melody Owen

Melody Owen aka Pearl Hyacinth is an interdisciplinary artist, writer, and curator from Portland, Oregon. She has used a conceptual remixing methodology across several disciplines for the last two decades, working primarily with video, installation, and collage. Her main focus is on exploring the i

mportance of ecology and multi-species voices. She has exhibited in film festivals, galleries, and museums, and has been awarded ten different artist residency fellowships around the world, including in Paris, Austria, Iceland, and Quebec. Melody is represented by Elizabeth Leach Gallery in Portland. She has an MFA in Electronic Integrated Arts and a MA in Environmental Arts and Humanities from OSU. Pearl Hyacinth is her multiverse avatar. Pearl has been building, curating, and making work within existing social, creative, virtual worlds since 2018 and with the cleanNFT community since 2021.

Marilyn Jordan

Marilyn Jordan is a jamband-inspired singer-songwriter who creates songs like impressionist paintings, from her native rural Oregon. Drawing on themes of home, hiding out, and running like hell, Marilyn tells stories of badass adventures through this bittersweet life, with intriguing stories and soul-saving sense of humor.

Stories: Washed by Sunlight.

Life is bittersweet — excruciating and wonderful. Both things are true. I find healing and light in words and colors, sounds and rivers, adventures and connections. As a student, I study the roles and ways of storytelling. I pour it all into songs of home, hiding out, and running like hell: So much trying to figure it out. Todd Sickafoose

Todd Sickafoose is a Tony and Grammy award-winning composer, producer, arranger, orchestrator, bandleader and double bassist. He has performed on hundreds of recordings, toured internationally, appeared at music venues and festivals from Carnegie Hall to New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, and played on national television and radio programs including the Tonight Show with Jay Leno, Late Show with Conan O’Brien, The Artists Den, and NPR’s Mountain Stage. Known as a musical cross-breeder who stretches across genres, Sickafoose has been described by the San Francisco Chronicle as “a captivating improviser, imaginative composer, and master of collaboration”.

While working on the soundtrack for “Time to 1.5,” Sickafoose became fascinated with the Keeling Curve, a graph representing the amount of CO2 in Earth’s atmosphere. He wanted to create a way for this data to be engaged with experientially, which resulted in “Carbon in the Age of Sapiens” (working title), a 24-hour long piece of music that encapsulates 800,000 years of atmospheric CO2 data and other geologically and anthropologically significant events. Over the course of 24 hours, the human impact on the amount of carbon in the atmosphere can be heard as a breathtaking gesture in the last 11 seconds of the piece.This trio plays along with the great acceleration of the last 30 minutes.

Griffin Barbieri

Texas-born composer and producer Griffin Barbieri makes computer music to question humanity's place in the universe. Influenced heavily by classical, minimalist, and electronic music, his latest works "Quintet" and "April 5th, 2063" show how technology should serve the traditions of humankind. gbarbieri.art

Quintet

"Quintet" is an aleatorial piece arranged for four instrumentalists and one computer musician. The four instrumentalists are split into pairs- each pair playing similar melodies systematically offset from each other- while the computer musician controls a drum machine and granular synthesizer. Fun to hear and fun to perform, the piece has a groove that's simple yet engaging.

Bio: Living Studios is a studio arts program (administered by Cornerstone Associates) that connects neurodiverse artists and artists with disabilities to professional art opportunities and meaningful community based projects. The artist communities at Living Studios are advancing the disability arts movement by contributing to their communities through their own inspired efforts and stories. We engage in open-ended performances that begin with the idea that our presence and movements through a space is a performance in itself.

At Cascade Junior High, a public school located in Turner, Oregon, ten students from 6 th , 7th and 8th grades meet twice a week after school to create art with OSU Art alumna Julianna Souther, BFA. Ms. Souther also has first-hand experience with Soundbox, having been a Soundbox4 Intern in 2021. This first year of CJHS Art Club, students have been enjoying creative hands-on projects like bookmaking, drawing, sculpting and others. The range of artistic ability among the Club’s student artists, and their willingness to learn from each other and Ms. Souther, make Art Club a place where creativity thrives!

Beneath My Silhouette

A collaborative sound piece including but not limited to DIY instruments, voice and office-supply sounds, CJHS Art Club students bring their own musical instruments or creative ideas to the table, then we choreograph them into a score. With a focus on “Leave No One Behind”, a United Nations Guiding Principle, and the UN Foundation’s “Stronger Together” theme, students hope to communicate to people worldwide that they are not alone and that we all want, and need, to support one another.

Swan Ferraro

Swan Ferraro (they/he) is an MFA student at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Working in performance, installation, photo/video, and poetry, their art seeks to abstract identity and space. Movement, improvisation and divination are used to explore themes around individual and collective resistance and healing. Ferraro has been featured in numerous exhibitions and publications, received awards and grants, and invited to give artist talks about their art and healing practices.  swanscissors.com

Creative Improvisation as Divination in the Trans Body (Live Performance)

A live ritual will utilize dance, music, and poetry as a form of meditation for and with the body. Transphobia lives within our nervous systems, exploiting the body’s survival responses. I will use my body as a form of storytelling to transform and heal. Focusing on the poetics of the performance, viewers will be invited to write a (short) response. A poem will be created with their words, thus the community becomes integrated into the transformation process. The stream of consciousness format is about creating new realities together.

I am a senior honors bioengineering student. I am a part of the PRAx interdisciplinary fellowship, working with Johnny Beaver and Skip Rochefort to write and illustrate a children's book talking about different inventions and discoveries from each state.

Kainoa Dall

The band Coastal Saturday started with a couple friends that met each other through music classes at OSU. They make indie pop/rock music together and are releasing a new single soon called “magnolia.”

Magnolia by Coastal Saturday is a song about capturing a moment that was so beautiful you wish you could stop the world. It was recorded and produced by Coastal Saturday at Sunday Studios, and is reminiscent of one of their popular songs “City Lights”.

Fiona Daley

Fiona Daley has been writing songs for approximately 4 years, with a catalog of over 60 works that is ever growing. As a student in both the visual and performing arts – graphic design and music production, respectively – she is always looking for more ways to bridge the two and use these forms of communication to express her world view and affect what she sees. Fiona writes songs not because anyoeeds her to, but because she needs to. She believes music and art are our greatest tools to be vulnerable and real, and in doing so, connect and grow.

Improv in Songwriting

 I will share my songwriting process from start to finish, using an example of my work. This will include everything from explaining the reason for writing the song, to choosing instrumentation, sharing clips of voice memos that show the progress and evolution, to ending with a performance of the finished song. 

Timmy James Barnett

Timmy James Barnett is a musician and FLO software/hardware developer. He studied violin with Anna Vayman at Ball State University for 6 years, where he received his BM and MM. His original music is inspired by microtonality and Free Software. He plays microtonal music on violin, variously fretted guitars, keyboards and computers. Free Software is important because it makes microtonality and music in general more accessible to all without compromising Human Tech Rights. It allows musical exploration without arbitrary boundaries. Timmy writes and uses Free Software for live performance with !mindparade and GNU/Linux Loves All.

Plugin Unplugged

A piece for violin that alternates between two tunings of B through E minor and G major. B can be tuned to the E string by 4/3. It can also be tuned to the D string by 5/3. The difference between the two is 81/80, a 5-limit comma measuring 21.5 cents.

Polyphony comes from double stops, delay and difference tones. A bass part is created through difference tones from double stops and effects. Though normally faint, the bass can be clearly heard through amplification, distortion and Just Intonation between two treble notes.

Throughout life, his journey has been one of overcoming challenges and obstacles, as he navigates a world that sometimes struggles to understand his nuances. But it's precisely this distinctive perspective that infuses his music with raw authenticity and a depth of emotion that resonates deeply with audiences.

He’s currently a student at Oregon State University, looking to earn his degree within the realm of Music Studies, while minoring in the field of Music Production.

Looking for Nostalgia

Inspired by a feeling of loneliness within the Music Program and a newfound appreciation of improvised dance, this piece reflects on both the artist’s positive and negative perspectives of learning to find happiness within his own adventures. Breaking away from a reliance of needing validation from others to appreciate his own efforts, he learns to finally appreciate and accept a side of himself that was once suppressed: a love for dance. While he often writes and performs piano love ballads, this artist looks to bring another side of his artistic identity with a familiar style to enjoy.

Lloyd Andrew McNemar

Having been in the music game since the age of 11, Lloyd Andrew McNemar has gone through a revolving door of musical styles and interest. From his orchestral backgrounds and grassroots to delving into the popular indie sound and all the retro sounds he thought there was no place else to turn to in music, so he jumped off the Western World and into the faraway and peculiar lands of the East for new inspiration and outlooks about music. For now he presents Americana Raga, a group of Western musicians who are interested and enamored by Hindustani music.

Tunes From The Dunes

“Tunes From The Dunes” is a very improvisational piece that takes traditional Eastern oriented music and pays homage to it with grace and style. After I, Lloyd Andrew McNemar, found my interest and taste for Hindustani music I couldn’t help but just get invested as a musician to really see what the hype is about, and it sure is something else. The piece is comprised of a sitar, dilruba, harmonium, and a sur tanpura.


Catherine Lee

Considered a “new breed of instrumental specialist,” (New Music Buff) Dr. Catherine Lee offers “immaculate, masterful oboe playing” (The Double Reed) in combination with inspired and discerning musicality across an impressive range of genres and styles. With a Juno Award nomination for Classical Album of the Year (solo artist), Lee’s second solo album, Remote Together (2021 – Redshift), received unanimously positive reviews from an international array of media. Lee is on faculty at Willamette University, and Lewis and Clark College, holds a Doctor of Music in Oboe Performance from McGill University, and a certification from the Deep Listening Institute. www.catherinemlee.com 

Solstice Soundings (2024): An interspecies improvisation with the domestic silkworm moth

I have spent the past 5 summers raising domestic silkworm moths, and they have been a profound source of inspiration. This was recorded using one microphone to record the silkworms, and another to capture my improvisation in response to them. Both were sent directly into the SCI, which listens, learns, and improvises with the sounds that it has heard. I continued improvising with the sounds produced by the SCI and the silkworms in real-time. 

Justin Preece

Justin Preece (BMus, MMus - SMU) is a percussionist, composer, and educator based in Corvallis, Oregon. A member of the music faculty at both OSU and Willamette University, Justin teaches studio percussion lessons, directs Willamette Chamber Percussion, co-directs the OSU Percussion Ensemble, is the founding director of OSU Samba Bateria, and is in his tenth year as Percussion Coordinator and lead drumline instructor/arranger for the Oregon State University Marching Band. Justin composes primarily for solo and chamber percussion, with premieres of his music occurring at the Northwest Percussion Festival and Oregon State University.

As a composer-performer, I am particularly interested in the place of human musical agency in an era of computational representation. I mediate this interest through my creative output as a percussionist-improviser. I propose to perform an improvised work (currently under development) using acoustic percussion instruments and possibly also digital percussive sounds (e.g. via MalletKat, malletStation, or Roland SPD-SX) as a way of reclaiming/maintaining space and agency for the original human performer in a world of synthesized reproduction and generation. I want to articulate a collective future that prioritizes human expression and motivation.

Brooke Taylor


I am an OSU student who plays mellophone in marching band, horn in wind symphony, and viola in the string ensemble. I began playing instruments when I started piano lessons at the age of 7 and fell in love with composition when listening to film scores in middle school. Marching band is my favorite and I have been told by friends that I bring a band charm to my compositions that are often for orchestra or string instruments.. I like to write about small moments that are meaningful to me more than about major events that one might expect.


DUET

This composition is a duet for violin and viola titled Nights at Irish Bend. The full work is four movements and is just over 20 minutes long, so I chose just the first two in order to stay within the time limit. I was inspired by visits to the Irish Bend covered bridge just off of OSU’s west edge of campus, and the times that my friends and I have been there at night. There’s always something so unusual about going places at night and those adventurous feelings were something I wanted to try and capture in my work.

Abe Tsai

Abe’s love of sharing music began as a young boy, performing for his great-grandmother. Along his multifaceted musical journey, Abe has competed statewide for both violin and oboe. Abe is a past winner of the CYS Young Soloists Competition for violin.  In addition, Abe is a fellow in the Newport Youth Symphony Young Composers Symposium. He has been fortunate to perform several of his compositions alongside the Corvallis Camerata Orchestra. 


As the founder of Corvallis Casa Musica, Abe hopes to honor his great-grandmother’s memory. Abe brings together student and adult musicians, spreading joy through music and service to the Corvallis community.  When Abe’s not practicing or composing, he’s probably studying BC calculus, training in the martial art of Aikido, or playing tennis!



La Esperanza, Quartet for Strings

I created La Esperanza to reflect a spirit of joy and resilience. In music, there is often a “moving line;” an orchestral voice with a melodic, driving tone. We might say that in life, there exists also such a line, a melody propelling us forward. In this piece, I seek to embody this sound, a spirit that lifts our hearts and compels us to make a difference in this world. La Esperanza sings the song of hope.  Special thanks to my ensemble for performing this piece alongside me!

I am a Fourth Year Business Student at Oregon State University. I am pursuing my Honors Thesis in Music by creating an original EP. I have been playing guitar and writing songs since I was 12 years old and I have a passion for expressing my experiences through my music. John R. Campbell 

John R. Campbell operates at the nexus of landscape and culture. His writing has appeared in prominent journals such as Poetry, The Threepenny Review, Georgia Review, and many others. He’s presented live music in in Chicago, Portland, Eugene, and Corvallis. He’s won awards from Poets and Writers, Utah Arts Council, Fulbright Foundation, and others, and performed his poetry in venues such as The National Arts Club (NYC), the University of Lisbon (Portugal), and the Mountain Writers’ Series (Portland). He has taught at University of Utah, University of Lisbon, and Oregon State University, where he currently teaches in the Honors College.

Abigail Underwood 

I’m Abigail Underwood and I am a senior in the Piano Performance and Psychology programs at Oregon State University. This piece is called Afternoon Blues and it is 2 minutes and 44 seconds long, originally composed on the piano but could be adapted for orchestral arrangements in the future.

This piece is called Afternoon Blues and was improvised over a short jazz progression I wrote a few months ago. This is the first recording over this progression that I recorded and I believe it fully captures the essence I was trying to portray when I originally wrote the progression.

  Tatiana Muzica (Music Mystique)

Tatiana Muzica  (Musique Mystique) is an improvisational musician, a story teller, and a siren in one. Her music takes you on a wonderful journey, a little bittersweet, like a medicine we need to take sometimes to heal. Tatiana uses her voice, multiple flutes, modulars and synthesizers that help her to create unique soundscapes on stage.

Stephanie E. Vasko 

Dr. Stephanie E. Vasko is an interdisciplinary artist and researcher. She works with sound (field recordings, virtual synthesis, hardware synthesis, circuit bending), sculpture, video, photography, and extended reality. Her work explores embodied experiences, warping perceptions, and creating mashups of cutting-edge and obsolete technologies.

Bend/Break/Heal/Repeat (LIVE ONLINE)

Duration: 10 min (Online Program)

This ten-minute performance combines live scoring with a live coding video synthesis presentation to document the artist’s journey through a year of medical interventions and trauma including a bone graft, internal fixation with titanium screws, and intense physical therapy.  Live scoring will be performed with VCVRack, tape loops, and improvised instruments, live video synth coding will be projected and performed using Hydra combined with a presentation of visuals (including X-rays, videos, illustrations, still images). 

Victor Villegas 

Victor Villegas is the Broadband & Digital Technologies Adoption Coordinator at OSU. He is a futurist, technologist, STEAM edutainer, teaching artist and multidisciplinary artist interested in the convergence of The Arts and Technology as a vehicle for education and science communication. He is best known for his creative K-12 STEAM outreach and engagement as “DroneSinger - the Weird Al of drones,” using technology, music, humor, puppetry and storytelling to reach underserved, underrepresented youth who might not naturally gravitate towards STEM subjects.

Kiana Schiffer (Artist/Director) 

Kiana Schiffer transforms the ordinary into visually compelling narratives through her inspiration from classical style, although her art can be defined as abstract expressionism. Born in Ashland, Oregon she now creates from her renovated school bus in Bend, Oregon. Using a culmination of acrylic, film photography, cinematography and calligraphy ink as her primary mediums Kiana has perfected a technique that emphasises the simplicity of the human form. Her art challenges the viewer’s perception of reality, often bending shapes, concepts and human figures into dream-like scenes that evoke a sense of comfort and simplicity. Kiana has no formal training in the arts but came from three generations of professional artists and has derived her inspiration from her great grandmother, Grandmother and mother. The central themes of Kiana’s work explores the human experience and the specific limitations of woman’s experience in westernised society. She frequently addresses themes of isolation, connectivity, presenting these issues in a way that is both inviting and simple. Kiana's work not only reflects her deep personal connections to her surroundings but also resonates with global woman’s concerns, positioning her art within a broader conversation about the humanities and invites viewers to interpret her work as an opportunity for connection.

Reclamation

Artist Statement:

 I am deeply inspired by the brilliance and simplicity of the human form. My work is an exploration of the human essence, an abstracted journey through the curves, edges, and intimacies of the naked form.  I am a multidisciplinary artist, who weaves abstract expressionism, classical style and fauvism together to emulate and articulate my attempt to convey the simplicity of the human body and other elements of life. My creations are conversations between the viewer and the viewed, engaging in a silent dialogue about beauty, vulnerability, and the strength found in the bareness of being. Through my art, I strive to capture the ephemeral, yet eternal, aspects of the human form, breaking it down into elemental shapes and the use of primary colours or film photography.  Each piece is an homage to the inherent beauty of fluidity and form, an acknowledgment of the body's power to communicate without words, through gestures and nuances that are both universal and profoundly personal.

I push the boundaries of abstraction with the use of oil pastels and canvas. I also use  film photography to invite contemplation and emotional resonance. My work is not just an observation of the human form but an immersion into the depths of human feeling and experience. It is about stripping away the layers of societal norms and expectations. 

As a multidisciplinary artist, my approach is eclectic, yet unified by a constant thread of exploration and experimentation. Whether through painting, calligraphy, photography or cinematography. I seek to create works that are not just seen but felt, inviting the viewer to step into a space of introspection and connection. Each piece is a step on a journey toward understanding the complexities of identity, existence, and the ineffable beauty of the human body.

Directors Statement:

This film emerges from my reckoning with femininity—its power, its marginalization, and its indomitable spirit. It is also a defiant challenge to the structures that seek to define and confine it. The death of my former self, but of the limitations placed upon that self by a patriarchal society that too often dictates narratives and norms.

"Reclamation" is an exploration of identity, of breaking free from the chrysalis of past selves, the letting go. It is about the violent, beautiful reawakening of a spirit long subdued. Through the lens of the protagonist, Ellis, we witness a series of metamorphic changes that mirror my own: her struggles are infused with my struggles, her victories are my own silent triumphs.

ellis's journey is not just about battling external foes but also about confronting internal ones. Her story is a dialogue between who she was told to be and who she chooses to become. This film uses the language of cinema—its imagery, its cadence, its silence—to shout a resounding "fuck you" to patriarchal prescriptions.

Directing "Reclamation" has been a therapeutic process, a means of processing grief and transforming it into something fierce and life-affirming. It is a declaration that the feminine will not be overlooked or overshadowed; it will reclaim its space boldly and unapologetically.
