Learning that lasts
A course should leave students with more than preparation for an exam. Ten or twenty years later, after particular tools and technical details have changed, students should retain principles and habits of reasoning that help them understand unfamiliar systems and continue learning independently.
Courses and course development
CYSE 601 — Advanced Cybersecurity Techniques and Operations
Graduate cybersecurity taught through virtual laboratories, research-paper development, technical presentations, and applied assessment.
CYSE/ECE/MSIM 416/516 — Cyber Defense Fundamentals
A combined undergraduate and graduate course spanning cybersecurity, electrical and computer engineering, and modeling and simulation. Redesigned with ODU Global for asynchronous delivery.
Model Engineering
Coursework emphasizing model development, analysis, systems thinking, and technical application.
Learning philosophy
• Begin with first principles, mental models, and tradeoffs before procedures.
• Use laboratories and applied problems to make knowledge transferable.
• Ask students to explain, defend, and communicate their reasoning.
• Move deliberately from structured guidance toward independent technical judgment.
Mentoring approach
I mentor students through the full research process: defining a tractable question, reading critically, designing and implementing methods, evaluating evidence, reviewing code and experiments, and communicating results. The goal is growing independence, sound judgment, and the ability to connect technical choices to a larger scholarly argument.
